Lord Peter Wimsey goes undercover at an ad agency to find out who pitched a copywriter down a flight of stairs—“Delightful reading” (The New York Times). The iron staircase at Pym’s Publicity is a deathtrap, and no one in the advertising agency is surprised when Victor Dean tumbles down it, cracking his skull along the way. Dean’s replacement arrives just a few days later—a green copywriter named … later—a green copywriter named Death Bredon. Though he displays a surprising talent for the business of selling margarine, alarm clocks, and nerve tonics, Bredon is not really there to write copy. In fact, he is really Lord Peter Wimsey, and he has come to Pym’s in search of the man who pushed Dean.
As he tries to navigate the cutthroat world of London advertising, Lord Peter uncovers a mystery that touches on catapults, cocaine, and cricket. But how does one uncover a murderer in a business where it pays to have no soul?
Murder Must Advertise is the 10th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.

Too slow moving Good author poor book
I love the characters in this book as well as the writing style. Very satisfying read.
Fun read. Lord Peter is always fun. The plot of this Dorothy Sayers story is tightly woven and intriguing. I loved it, and bet you will, too.
Very much enjoyed the change of pace in setting for this novel in the series. Interesting to see Sir Peter hanging out/interacting with every day people and being a working man.
outstanding writing from a 1930’s perspective that still captures your interest .
What’s not to love about a murder mystery set in an advertising agency in Britain between the Wars by Dorothy Sayers? Nothing!! Lord Peter Winsey is suave, debonair, and leading two, three lives while his brother-in-law demands actual proof and cold showers his theories. What I love most about this book in particular is the insight into the …
I love all of the Sayers books, but Lord Peter Wimsey is the best character she used!
Best of Dorothy Sayers. Have read it at least 5 times
This is my favourite Lord Peter mystery. Not only is the puzzle intriguing, but we get a glimpse of the wild, wicked world of advertising. There is a huge difference between ‘made from’ and ‘made with’. Ms. Sayers at her finest.
One of my favorites!
The dearth of fresh superlatives with which to praise Ms. Sayers would be a fine case for Lord Peter himself. In his stead I’ll say only that this particular mystery ends on a note so subtly brutal, haunting and lingering – it belies the whimsy beneath the bawdy.
Very clever the way this story unfolds! Wow! What an interesting collection of coworkers & their interactions! The way advertising was/is created & placed before the public eye is told from a perspective that’s so witty & cleverly put! Along the way murder & murderer revealed! Lord Peter- oh my!
Classic and wonderful
One of my favorites. A mystery classic by one of the genre’s grand dames. Playful, sophisticated, and 1920’s smart.
Dorothy L. Sayers is a wonderful author. I have enjoyed everything she has written!
Dorothy Sayers is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of my favorite books by her!
