I love reading mysteries since my mother introduced me (at the age of 12) to Agatha Christie (my goddess in the genre). To be honest I had no idea how I was going to react to a “short silly cozy mystery” and I asked myself what does that even mean. Well thanks to “The Affair of the Hideous Vase” I found out.
This is a very funny story that revolves around a stolen vase. The characters are well thought out, even the side characters are well thought out. The story kept me intrigued as the thought of why someone would steal not just a vase but a “hideous” vase had me turning the pages. The story is well paced and while it took me a while to read, I am sure that everyone else in the world will finish it in a couple of hours if not sooner.
Bill has a terrific knack of giving everyone a common background while keeping them quite different, including “For-Get-Me-Not” the dog (yes that’s the dog’s name).
I thoroughly enjoyed this and would like to give my thanks to Bill as I can now add the “Short Silly Cozy Mysteries” genre to my permanent reading list, an absolute recommendation to any reading list.
If you like silly OTT fun, then this is the book for you.
For me, it was all a little too much. Too over the top. The sword Jason carries around is a good example. Who in their right mind would walk around with something like that in the real world? Crazy, right? And unrealistic. But that’s the kind of silly fun you can expect. It’s all meant to not be too serious, so it shouldn’t be taken all that seriously.
The characters were are kind of caricatural, but I’m sure that they are meant to be. Trevor was too clueless for me. But I liked Stacy and Jason and I liked their communication. That was fun, some silly fun. But when they all got together the conversation got almost ridiculous. And I think that is exactly what it was meant to be; this book offers exactly what the blurb promises: a short silly cozy mystery. Utterly silly! And while I needed a bit of fun, this was maybe too much of a good thing. Not totally my thing. But if you like silly OTT fun, then this is the book for you. Because in its subgenre, it’s quite allright.
Stacy’s Aunt Catherine gave her vase on her last visit the vase is missing and her aunt is coming for a visit in three days. Stacy must find the vase before her aunt shows up or face her wraith.
Stacy hires a detective to find the vase. This is his first case and has not had any training but he is sure that he can solve the case and find the missing vase in plenty of time.
There are quite a few suspects on his list to interview. During the interviews he keeps scaring everyone with his sword that he keeps swinging around. He’s taking notes crossing his T’s and dotting his I’s during his investigation keeping a record of it all.
The Affair of the Hideous Vase is a fast paced short read that will have you laughing out loud and will keep you hooked wondering who would steal such a hideous thing and why?
