Fallen Valkyrie Legionnaire, Raven Aquilus, knows she’s an outcast to her kind. Stuck in New Orleans as the Protectress of the Nine Gates of the Underworld, she lives as close to the edge as possible. But when a guardian in one of her Gates is ritualistically slaughtered, Raven is found lying in a pool of blood. When FBI Paranormal Agent Duncan O’Brien is assigned to investigate the brutal … brutal murders, he never imagined he’d be working in a fallen Valkyrie’s domain—especially when said Valkyrie is beautiful, smart, and enigmatic. She’s everything he knows he should avoid.
Time is running out, though, and if Raven can’t work with Duncan and his team to discover the killer, she’s not only going to lose another guardian, she’s going to lose her life, too. If only she can control her attraction to Duncan long enough to stop an ancient war from reigniting between the Valkyries and the Fae.
Welcome to the Raven’s Faery Tale Series–Betrayal, lust, love, murder, jealousy, and revenge. The faery-tales your mother never told you about just came true.

This was my first book by Scarlett, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, if you’re looking for an unconventional fairy tale with a kick-ass heroine, then look no further! Tragedy strikes her guardians, and one by one, they fall victim to grisly murders. Unfortunately, with each death, Raven is weakened further and further. As she and her trusted “murder” rush to find and stop the murderer, she meets Duncan, a strong & sexy paranormal agent who coincidentally has been called in to unravel the mystery of the very same crimes. The chemistry between the two was palpable from the very beginning with neither side willing to admit to more than the instant sexual attraction. While I would have liked a little more development between the two, it was thankfully and definitely not an “insta-love” relationship. The story moved along well and you can tell that the author spent a good amount of time on her research. I’m definitely glad I chose to give this book a go and can’t wait until the next one. If only I could give 4.5 stars instead of just 4!
Scarlett Holloway is an author that is proving with this great story that she is an author to be reckoned with!
Raven’s story is so far from her other series but has the greatness you have come to expect from her!
When I started reading I really wasn’t sure what to expect but within the first couple pages I couldn’t wait to continue and see where the story was going and how it would affect Raven and her murder and Duncan!
This is a read that brings you some learning and fun and action and a take on a paranormal that I have not read before!
I loved it and can’t wait for more!
This is not your ordinary fairy tale… Scarlett has the ability to pull you in and she keeps you enthralled until the very end. I’m not sure how exactly to word this review without giving too much away so please bare with me as I ramble on about how good this book is and how you need to read this book. Especially if you love paranormal mixed with mythological beings!!!
Raven is our strong leader who is fearless and will stop at nothing to protect those she cares for. She takes her job as the protector of the 9 gates of the underworld very serious. She has a team of trusted and valuable team members who help her keep things safe. When a string of murders begins she along with her team and a very sexy paranormal agent named Duncan need to figure out who is doing such grisly things. The mystery that is confounding everyone will have you on the edge of your seat flipping the pages to try and figure out just what is happening. I will say everything is not as it seems…. Raven has a hard time with the feelings she is having forward a Duncan since he is merely human. Can the two of them coexist and solve the mystery at to who or what is trying to tear apart Raven’s world??
Let me also add that Scarlett did was astounding research with all the mythical beings we get introduced to.
An amazing book. It was a page turner that kept you so interested in what would happen next. This is my first book of Scarlet’s and it sure won’t be my last. Raven who is very vulnerable when her guardian keep getting killed. Raven ends up lying in her own blood. Raven decides in order to find who is responsible for the murders she has to work with Duncan a FBI paranormal agent, whom she falls for but she don’t understand why since he is human and she is not. . The turns in this story keep you wanting so much more and will Raven die as she is weakened. The torture, the murders, the betrayal, and ending leaves you hanging and definitely you want more. Looking forward to the next.
Scarlett Holloway’s writing has a way of drawing you in and keeping you captivated until the very end. I felt emotionally connected to the story and the characters. Raven finds herself vulnerable and at risk when someone starts torturing and killing her guardians. Now she has no choice but to join a human and his team to find the one responsible for these brutal ritualistic murders. Duncan is drawn to Raven from the first moment she appears at one of his crime scenes. When they are forced to worked together their bantering turns into much more. This fast paced tale is packed full of torture and betrayal. The cliffhanger ending will leave you wanting much more. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
