In the most unlikely of places, a party in Manhattan, Tate found his cowboy, the hero of his dreams—at least it was a handsome man dressed up as a cowboy. Unfortunately, Tate’s lasso failed, the cowboy escaped, and he found out that forever would require a second chance.Tate, the second son of the large Matheson clan, moved to New York City from his native Los Angeles to head up the East Coast … East Coast branch of the family business Matheson and Greene. A fan of cowboys from his early childhood, Tate fell hard when he saw a vision out of his dreams clad in Western shirt, hat, boots and tight-fitting jeans. It was infatuation at first sight. Soon it became the perfect relationship until the Matheson family disease interfered.
Simon, the target of Tate’s affections, grew up in Manhattan, the adopted son of two moms, a successful sculptor and an art history professor. He found it easy to fall in love with the tall, broad-shouldered, muscular Tate. They were a perfect match from their preferences in food to the hot times together in bed. Unfortunately, poor communication was the frayed rope binding them together that eventually broke.
Eighteen months after the breakup, Tate’s older brother, Mason, intervenes with a plan to hire Simon and his interior design talents to spruce up the new New York offices of Matheson and Greene. The fire is soon lit again, but the old complications and a new one with deep pockets threaten to ruin Tate and Simon’s second chance.
Cowboy is a 57,000-word gay romance with second chance themes and steamy scenes. It is the second book in the series The Mathesons and can be read as a standalone story but is best as a follow-up to First. There are no cliffhangers, and the story includes a guaranteed happy ending.

Cowboy is one of the many reasons that this author is a go-to for me. I loved Tate in the first book in the series, and now that I’ve read his story, I love him even more. In addition to getting to catch up with some of the terrific characters we met in book one, we get introduced to a few new ones here, Simon’s parents being at the top of that list for me. I absolutely loved the banter and wit along with the unconditional love between Simon and his parents. On the romance side, we learn the problems Simon and Tate had on the first go around at the very beginning of the story, so the rest of the book is all about their initial time apart and the agonizingly slow build of their reconciliation. So, yes, I wanted things to move faster between Tate and Simon, but at the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed their dating and getting to know each other again as they learned what’s most important in a relationship – putting each other first. The book does work as a standalone, but I would suggest reading them in order so you meet the whole Matheson clan. As for this one, Tate and Simon are just perfect together, and I loved their sweet and sexy second chance.
Two years ago Simon gave up on his relationship with Tate and left. They never stopped loving each other and nowadays they are both miserable and alone. Thanks to a meddling brother, they have to spend time together and eventually admit that their feelings are as strong as before.
This is the second chance, and maybe this time they will manage to make things work .
Tate and Simon were a great couple who weren’t only lovers, but great friends as well. This story was sweet and had very low angst. This was a light and refreshing story about two men who really have always been madly in love with each other and forgot it for a short bit.
I wish that we could have seen more character development with both these characters. While the story was fun to read, nothing really happened. Simon breaks up with Tate, in the beginning, because Tate is a workaholic. We see Tate acknowledge that he is, and talk to people about not being so single-minded about his work, but we never actually see Tate make a choice to not work, or stop working, in order to strengthen his relationship with Simon.
Similarly, Simon says that he has changed, but there wasn’t a single instance where we saw any example of it; perhaps all signs of these character’s growth was in the periods of skipped time…
I also wish that some of the little details had been ironed out – for example, the 18 months of our main characters being separated has turned into an unknown number of years by the middle of the book. Also, Ted’s ex-husband getting remarried in South Dakota got down-graded to merely an ex-boyfriend when Tate was talking to Simon about it. It’s possible that these things did get caught and corrected in the final, published version.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I LOVED book 2 of The Mathesons! Like book 1 this is a second chance romance that had me turning pages. Tate, like his big brother, is a workaholic. He lost the love of his life because of it. These two never got over each other. A year and a half later, the pain and regret are still there. One chance for Tate to make things right with Simon is all he hopes for. It impressed me that he sought advice so he wouldn’t fall back into the same bad habits. I loved that Simon too talked to his mom looking for sound counsel. Both guys determined to put the past behind them and work hard to create a better relationship. Simon’s moms are fantastic and I especially loved seeing Mason and Kyle again.
Baseball games, video chats, and dancing create a new beginning for Tate and Simon! Watching Tate an Simon grab that second chance at love, has all the feels for me! A second chance with the one you still love is an amazing gift and both Tate and Simon want this time to be different and they want forever. Both MC’s have changed and grown over the last eighteen months apart and this gives them the space to understand what wasn’t working and what is truly special about their partnership.
I really enjoyed the writing and the story-line kept me reading way to late last night. i became invested in wanting to see them find their way back together. Learning to communicate is so hard for all of us, and realizing that no relationship is perfect makes the work we put into being a good partner worth it. These MC’s take their time and date and learn before they go back to living together and i enjoyed their romance. Their connection is so strong and they will definitely steam up your kindle!
I love how we got to see previous characters from First, the first book in this Mathersons’ Series. This book could be read as a stand-alone, but i would so recommend reading book one because you get so much of the relationships of this family. First is also just a fun read!
