I was totally drawn into this story and did not want to put it down. The hero and heroine are both very pragmatic characters and their mutual – and well-concealed – attraction seems to have developed during the 1st month of Lockhart’s stay in the cottage, which is not part of the story. The mysterious Dariell again plays a supporting role and gets his happy end as well.
There is a good balance of dialogue and action, along with suspense that had me anxious for the next page to find out how the scene would turn out.

Hudson Lockhart is returning to London after escaping to India 5 years ago to avoid being hanged for a murder he did not commit. He suspects someone in his family had something to do with incriminating him of the murder. Now, he must return home to face his family to prove his innocence and why he was written out of his father’s will since he is the eldest son but he needs someone to pretend to be his wife who is pregnant with his heir.
Claudia Darling takes care of her blind sister at a run-down manor that was left to them when their parents died. All days are the same until a handsome, Hudson Lockhart, appears at her door seeking a place to stay. She rents him the coach house and he pays her 2 months rent, which she can really use. After learning a little about him, he makes her an offers she cannot refuse.
Will this be the answer to Claudia’s money dilemma, can she resist the charismatic Hudson, will they both resist more than a pretend marriage while not escaping the lust?
I highly recommend this read – Adele Clee always has everything I enjoy in a book; action, deceit, blackmail, lies, mystery, romance, humor, some spice and love! It was nice to see Hudson’s friends from earlier books in the series.
Another winner from Adele Clee! This book might be my favourite in the series, I loved the characters and the story. It has romance and mystery, two of my favourite types of books to read. It was great seeing some of the previous heroes and their loved ones putting in an appearance to help with the villains. I recommend this book, it was so good I didn’t want it to end. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after I received an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Passionate!
Hudson Lockhart and Claudia Darling, these are the names of the two main characters in this delightful tale and could these surnames be any more romantically descriptive? Not to my way of thinking!
This story proves, beyond any doubt, that if one asks enough searching questions, one is bound to get to the truth.
It is a well written page-turner, contains the right amount of mystery and intrigue, good and bad guys (and ladies too) and some lovely and at times hot romancing too.
I loved every moment of this book and happily recommend it to you.
I read an Advance Readers Copy of the ebook and this is my voluntary and unbiased review.
A Gentleman’s Curse
Avenging Lords book 4
by Adele Clee
Hudson Lockhart has been running from the hangman’s noose for the past five years, framed for a murder he never committed. After amassing a fortune he’s back to uncover the culprit/culprits. Confident that it’s someone in his family and to flush out the vilain he decides a plan and a wife is the perfect trap. He never intended to fall in love with his pretend wife!
Claudia Darling is in dire straits, caring for a blind sister, managing a run down estate and trying to keep the very vile Mr. Thorncroft’s threats at bay, have taken a toll on her. Until a proposal from the most handsomest man has her grabbing on to this chance to bring an end to her financial woes. But will her heart pay the ultimate price?
Once again Adele Clee has written a tale of murder, mystery and intrigue that captures the readers imagination. You’ll never guess the villain until the very end. Loved loved Hudson and Claudia, the slow burn romance that just sizzled off the pages!
I can’t wait to see what this very talented writer has in store for us next!
I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion
