This is the first historical I read by Susan Howatch many years ago. She’s my favorite author and I loved rereading it on my Kindle.
Penmarric tells the story of the Plantagenets, Henry II through John I, but set in the tin mining country of Cornwall. Penmarric is the manor house that represents England and the Castallack family history mirrors …
A great family saga based around a family estate. Lots of historical color and disfunctional characters. Howatch excels in this genre.
Another wonderful book from this author.
This is a story of a landed gentry family in Cornwall, England that extends from the early 1890’s through the close of World War II in 1945. The story is told through the perspective of five members of the family across several generations with themes of greed, ambition and struggles for power on the stage of a changing world. Loved this book. Complex characters!
This book was a great historical fiction read. It is the second book that I have read from this author and like the other book I was not disappointed. I will definitely look for more from this author. If you like historical fiction (family saga) that takes place in the British Isles and Ireland, I recommend this author.
I read this book years ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly at the time.
Well written family saga with lots of twists and turns right to the end.
I enjoyed the first 1/3 of the book and then it went downhill from there for me. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Good story..period piece.
Engrossing, but fails to evoke its Cornish setting and presents characters who are utterly unlikable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this family saga.
Retreading this wonderful book
Interesting, well written family saga.
Loved the English history. Great story!
Immersive family saga
Great retelling of ancient English history in a modern setting. Absolutely fascinating!
Excellent story telling from this author as usual.
This book told the story of one family in Cornwall from the 1890’s to the 1940’s. It was quite interesting. If you like family sagas, you’ll enjoy this.
