Many of the recipes contained elements that are not good for the keto diet but it did give me some ideas.
This one was a miss for me, as a casual health-minded eater. While it’s cool that the Keto and Mediterranean diets are explained both separately and together and that there’s meal plan for a committed ketoer, there were four detractive factors that played in my rating.
Let me begin by listing the first factor that may not be a factor for other people and that’s this: while I very much enjoy healthful mindsets and recipes, I’m a bit of a picky eater. Taking that into account, unfortunately there weren’t as many recipes in here that I was interested in as I was hoping for. Of course, that is my personal taste only, and another person who enjoys more vegetables and seafood than I do may like this cookbook more.
However, there were three other factors that lent to my rating.
To begin with, *many* of the recipes here called for almond flour, which if you didn’t know, is an extremely costly flour. It was the only flour I saw used in this cookbook, and, unlike a 5-pound bag of whole wheat flour for $3.86; a 16-ounce bag of coconut flour for $3.52; or even a 16-ounce package of oat flour for $3.81; a meager 16-ounce bag of almond flour costs $10.98 in Wal-Mart, and I was expected to use it OFTEN. This is unreasonable. For such a pricey shopping list item, I feel other options should have been listed.
Secondly, pictures. There were no pictures for the recipes here! And if you’re anything like me, you’ll know pictures aren’t just a privilege but a requirement for any quality cookbook, for the interest in a recipe and the guide it provides.
Lastly, most of the recipes I tried here didn’t have the flavor or texture I look for in good food. While the Morrocan Vegetable Tagine was well-liked by my family, the Breakfast Cakes with Berry Syrup, for instance, were very flat and crumbly, and the Chicken Piccata lacked savory flavor and was far too vinegary from the many chopped capers the recipe called for. Most of the recipes I tried here struck out for me and my family’s pallettes.
Overall, this cookbook got its two stars for its well-detailed information and the recipe my family did like. Unfortunately, this cookbook generally wasn’t for me, but had some great ideas for anyone serious about the Keto diet. Someone looking for unique recipes in that subcategory may find this cookbook helpful, and if they know their tastes gear towards the Mediterranean diet, I’d recommend it to them.
