I’d give 10 stars if I could.
This is book 2 in the Burning Girl series & while I think you could read it without reading Bone Music first, trust me, you don’t want to. They’re both amazing & you really want to see Charley’s incredible journey.
There’s something very special about these books – how they suck you in, make you believe, have you rooting for the “good guys” and some of the “walk the line between good and bad guys” because the writing is that exceptional. You feel it, see it, experience it along with the characters.
Charley is the most believably strong woman I’ve ever read. She has all the emotions, all the courage, all the divided feelings over her gift and her life, both personally (with Luke) and in her abilities. She’s a fully fleshed woman of character who is put in the most exceptional of circumstances. So, soooo good!
Up-all-night reading. This is a richly-imagined thriller with a heart as well as a plot that keeps you guessing. Christopher Rice writes with maturity and control about the effects of childhood trauma and the resilience of the human spirit. Pro tip: Burning Girl #3 is coming out soon.
Brilliant writing in this book, captivating characters and lots of intrigue!
Burning Girl! Decepticon Toaster! I’m going to start this review with a warning I saw in another: If you have not yet read Bone Music, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. But you should *absolutely* read Bone Music… and then you’ll be desperate to get this book in your hands immediately. 😀 (Also, if you haven’t read Bone Music yet… stop reading this review now and go read it. 🙂 )
Arguably one of the only maybe weaknesses of Bone Music is that Burning Girl… didn’t. Here, we get Burning Girl burning early enough in the tale that you almost have to know it is going to happen again somehow… and Rice doesn’t disappoint.
Along the way we also get a reference to one of those jokes that *always* makes me laugh: “My wife asked me why I carry a gun in the house. I looked at her and said “Decepticons”. She laughed. I laughed. The toaster laughed. I shot the toaster. It was a good day.”
Ultimately this continues the excellent work Rice began in Bone Music of creating a compelling Limitless-type superhero but focusing on the various interpersonal relationships at least as much as the superpowers/ action, and is very much recommended.
Blood Echo is an addicting fast-paced thriller that you will not be able to put down. From the first page to the last the author constantly adds twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat constantly trying to guess how it all will end. The item that stands out above all else in this story are its perfectly constructed characters; from the hardcore heroine and the school bully with a heart of gold to the morose serial killers and complex anti-villains, each one draws you in, involving you deeper and deeper in until you feel like you are part of the story itself. I highly recommend this book it was definitely a one sit read for me.
Supergirl!
Corruption, serial killing, terrorism, megacorporations, action, and excitement–take a joyride with author Christopher Rice as his heroine and her cohort seek to maintain justice, freedom, and the American way. The writing is taut and sucks you along through twisted storylines, providing enough background information that I could follow the instant action despite not having already enjoyed book one of the series. At the end you are given a somewhat satisfying conclusion, including some additional background on the main characters, but definite hints at more mischief to come. Somewhat intense!
It’s Christopher’s birthday so what better thing to do than recommend one of his wonderful books. He’s one of my all time favorite writers. He has an artist’s sensibility with words and imagery a movie makers sense of action. Can’t miss!
