⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This is probably the best novella-length story I’ve read.” William Schmidt USAEvery road is the wrong road when you’re driving 291This was not the first-time that rookie cop Michael Chambers had found himself stuck in this broken-down police vehicle while the rain bucketed down outside. In fact, this kind of ‘bad luck’ had happened almost every time he’d been assigned car 291. Usually, he’d get a flat, or the locks would jam or the damned onboard computer would freeze.
291, though, had a bloody and tragic history which might explain why this piece of metallic crap seemed so intent on driving him crazy—excuse the pun.
At first, he jokingly called it the demon car, but now he realized he may not be far off the truth. Something lurked inside this car and whatever it was, it meant him harm.
He was beginning to seriously believe that if he didn’t fight back soon, this car might be the death of him. And he wasn’t about to let that happen.
From international bestselling suspense author Susan May, comes a story of possession, desperation, and one man’s battle against an unknown enemy. 291 is a brilliant novella-length tale that will leave you breathless until the very last page and wondering what just happened?

291 is a twisted tale in more ways than one with the biggest twist saved for the very end.
When I started reading this, I was immediately reminded of the Hulu Original “The Rookie,” starring Nathan Fillion since 291’s protagonist is also an older than average rookie cop. That train of thought disappeared and was replaced by thoughts of CHRISTINE and FROM A BUICK 8. I went back and forth between a cop having a series of bad days, and, maybe, that same cop experiencing the supernatural. It is hard to tell until you get to that last page.
291 is a fast read that will take you down roads you may not want to explore. You will go along for the ride just to find out what is really happening.
Boy do I love this author. Her stories are creepy in the best of ways and always leave me feeling like I have entered an altered universe where the unnatural takes over. This time we get a car with a history, a questionable one at best. A haunted car?? Where does she come up with this stuff. It’s a great read especially with the twist at the end as this slacker gets his. . . well you’ll see. It’s a great story and yes it’s done well by this author who likes to trip us up.
How could this short novella be so riveting?! Such a great idea, clever writing and a real brain tickler. I just can’t stop thinking about it!
Too much profanity/not for me
This was an amazing book. Susan May has captured the heart of a Christine era type read and made it all it’s own.
Rookie cop Michael Chambers has been stuck in car 2-9-1. IF it was going to go wrong in any car it went wrong in this car. It was going wrong so often and poor rookie cop Michael started to think that the car was possessed by a demon. He didn’t know what to do about it. It got so bad he started losing weight and could not sleep and just didn’t know what to do. He finally came up with a plan. It was a crazy plan but it was the only thing he could think of to get away from the car and the demon that was in the car.
If you want to know what happens and I think you do, then you really should read this book. It is a rather quick read and it is well worth it. Nothing but the best in this book. I can not wait to read more from this amazing author. So far I am loving her writing style. So Stephen King-like yet all her own in the end.

By Susan May
I have read everything that Susan May has written and have thoroughly enjoyed each book. Her newest, 291, did not live up to my expectations of her writing.
291 is about a “haunted” car and the rookie cop who is assigned it each time he works. While I enjoyed the story, I did not enjoy it as much as previous stories of hers. I felt she took too long to get to the end. Susan always keeps the reader in suspense, but this story bogged down too often on a storyline that I felt was not necessary to keep the suspense moving along.
Even with my negative thoughts on 291 I still highly recommend readers pick up any of Susan May’s novels. You will never be disappointed.
If you are a Stephen King fan and are looking for a new author who writes similar stories, check out Susan May. Her books and stories are very reminiscent of Mr. King’s works and are just as enjoyable!
Michael Chambers is a Rookie Cop at the ripe “old” age of 42. He comes from a long line of cops but fought against following in his father’s footsteps. Instead, he has been working at security and other mind-numbing jobs.
As a Rookie, he is assigned to patrol areas that see a minimum of action and crime. Michael suspects that this is because of his age. But, the biggest problem he has with his job is that he keeps being assigned to drive vehicle #291. Said vehicle comes with a lot of mechanical problems and Michael begins to suspect that it might be haunted ala “Christine”.
As the story progresses, we learn that #291 is a Memorial vehicle, dedicated to the memory of Frank Chester, who died in the line of duty while using this car. The detail in the story of Frank was wonderful and the author does a great job making the reader feel every emotion.
After Chambers becomes convinced that the car is haunted (or just out to get him personally), he decides to take matters into his own hands. Once again, the author does an amazing job describing Chambers’ emotions and feelings as he puts his plan into action. And the ending? What an unexpected twist! I don’t dare say more because each reader needs to experience this story with a fresh viewpoint.
Ms. May’s books are wonderfully entertaining, well-written, and have great character development. Just be sure that you have plenty of time to start what you finish because you won’t dare put this story down until you reach the end!
291 is an old patrol car. It seems whatever officer is assigned to this vehicle, something malfunctions. Is the car haunted or is it a hazing initiation. This novella keeps you interested with the twists and turns. An unexpected ending. This is one of the best novellas I have read and highly recommend it.
This was a one-sitting read because you couldn’t put the book down. Great descriptions right to the point that allows you to put your touch on it. This novella shows how mind control is so very prevalent in life. Loved it!!!
Once again, Susan May has given us a page turner, button presser, which ever your reading apparatus. Right from “Go” this had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what is going to happen next. I would not expect anything less from Susan, she is the mistress of “Twisted haunting scary”. Thank you for this incredible story.
