This is one of those reviews I might have to revisit once I’ve had some time to put the advice it contains into practice, because make no mistake, this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. David Gaughran lays out a methodical plan for getting BookBub ads to work for your book, using some basic math, decent graphics and a reasonable budget, but it isn’t going to work overnight. Not unless you can afford to do all the testing he recommends simultaneously, anyway, which I definitely can’t.
What I like best about this book is it’s not math-dense. I’m no dullard with math, but my eyes glaze over once statistic-heavy spreadsheets start to come into play, and with Gaughran’s method, you have absolutely no need of them. He gives some very understandable targets you can see right from your BookBub ad dashboard, and then discusses how to go about optimizing your ads to improve against those targets. It’s easy to understand, engagingly written, and with links to best-practice examples, possible for anyone to execute. A formula for success.
I’ve already set up my first trial ads, and while my figures aren’t anything to shout about yet, I have confidence that I can improve them by refining my graphics and targeting using Gaughran’s methods. This is a very solid addition to his Let’s Get Publishing series (I recommend Let’s Get Digital to anyone even THINKING about self-publishing), and I’m giving it a solid five stars.
You can struggle along losing money on BB ads–or you can read this book. David Gaughran explains what works on BB and what doesn’t, and how to design, target, and test your ads. A must read for authors.
David Gaughran’s latest book is just as great as all his others. If you’re an author trying to figure out how to run effective BookBub ads, this is your resource. I had him on our podcast to talk about the book and we ended up going so long we made three episodes out of the interview. Loaded with great tips on how to put an ad together, how to target, and how to bid. Pick it up–you’ll thank me.
Author/publishers everywhere owe David Gaughran a heartfelt thanks for his generous work figuring out and explaining effective BookBub advertising techniques. This book is a terrific guide.
What Gaughran does not know about book marketing, is not worth knowing.
A great informative book that provides specific details about how to create the perfect test ads and campaigns for your discounted book. He discusses how to optimise ads and how to troubleshoot. It is a book I can refer back to time and time again, and was easy to read. David is inspiring to all indie authors.
The authority on BookBub ads. Highly recommend!
One of my favourite publishing and writing books of all time, this is a great book that gives you all the information you need to be able to use Bookbub ads. I’m really looking forward to using the knowledge in this book. A must have for all authors!
This guide is very thorough and is easy to follow. Step by step, David Gaughran explains the ins and outs of BookBub. As an author who is about to launch my next book in the fall, I have begun doing the “tests” for my ads in the way he recommends so that I’m ready to go for the launch. He tells it like it is, with humour as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is venturing out into the world of BookBub to use as a promotional strategy, especially if you are about to do a launch. The first 30 days are the most important!
he key question for any book like this is how did it help? The few hours spent reading saved many days of trial and error. The price of the book saved me misspent and counterproductive ads. Read this to learn what does not work, then follow it to set up your campaign Finally, check out the resources for useful tips.
This is a must-read for newbies to Bookbub, like me. I had signed up for the bookbub email ads. about a year ago. I’ve purchased many ebooks through those email ads. I’m an author, The Finger of Suspicion is my first novel. I previously ran ads on Amazon with some success. When I discovered BOOKBUB ADS EXPERT I downloaded it. This book is descriptive and informative. The author takes the reader from Bookbub basics to the nuts and bolts of becoming a Bookbub partner to successfully advertising your books on the BB platform. Gaughran organized his book to give authors a jump start and avoid newbie mistakes. I will reread the book taking notes this time.
This book gives you a solid overview of how Bookbub ads work and how to make them work to your advantage if you’re willing to put the time into testing and fine-tuning them. I learned a few things, including one cool ninja trick that’s going to help me immeasurably as I market my fiction to more mainstream audiences.
One caution: If you write for a small, niche audience, the tips and how to’s here are not going to be as much help, especially if your books are Amazon exclusive. You need author targets that meet certain parameters – Bookbub parameters, how popular they are on Amazon doesn’t count – and an audience that’s online, opening email when your ads are running.
Loved this book – so informative and helpful and truly cleared the Advertising fog for me – and unexpectedly it was very entertaining too due to David’s brilliant witty humour – talk about laughing while you learn! Highly recommended to all all Indie Authors.

BookBub Ads Expert decodes how bookbubs ads work and provides you some informative an helpful advice on how to leverage bookbub as well as improve your book marketing in general. The author shares his treasure trove of experiences, but also provides strategy and tactics to help you use bookbub effectively. I highly recommend this book if you’re an independent author.
Funny at times, the author gets straight to business with a well-organized, highly authenticated how-to book. This one can be read without reading any of his other non-fiction works. Filled with useful resources/references.
A guide to book marketing that keeps you grinning. Okay, that’s probably not the expected review, but seriously, book marketing is usually BORING to read about…until you let David Gaughran have a crack at it. The humor might be offensive to some (did I actually read the word “dildo” somewhere in there?), but I loved it.
As for the advice itself. Solid! I’m on DG’s mailing list so I read his Bookbub Ad sequence long before this book was published. At first I was worried this might just be a repeat of the same material, but it’s not. Well, it is. Some similar stuff is covered, but it’s like the enhanced version with plenty of good explanations of WHY you need to do what he’s recommending, when to do it, and how to keep improving.
I’ve been meaning to start doing BB Ads for more than a year. A signed up for the program shortly after it started but then got caught up in the FB changes, the AMS changes, and my own crazy publishing schedule and never got around to this.
This book is written in the witty format that David has used in other books, making it easy to read and human. His premise about the BB readers and the already narrowed audience to books is the entire reason I wanted to try these ads. I really appreciated how he contrasted the differences between FB ads and BB ads because I had made some mistaken assumptions about how they worked. I also appreciated the many examples he provides, with external links, so that I have templates to adapt instead of starting from scratch.
My next step is to follow these instructions and see how it works for me. Past Gaughran books have worked well for me, so I have full expectations that this will too.
I will be honest, I have been anxiously awaiting this book for some time. Bookbub and all its features have been a mystery to me. I am a self-published author in the craft industry and could not figure out how BookBub might help me.
This book has changed everything. David Gaughran is not only one of the most knowledgeable in the self-publishing realm, but he’s also honest and forthright in what information he teaches. Not to mention funny! But what I feel is most important is that he shares information because he really wants authors to succeed in honest practices.
He may have opinions about CPM rather than CPC but that is because he has tested and found the reasons why CPC has issues. Never once did he say not to use it, just beware. Frankly, I agree wholeheartedly with it as a designer who advertised on Ravelry, the #1 market to purchase patterns in the knit and crochet industry. Many of their ads are CPM based and I get the most bang for my buck in those ads.
Now that I understand how it works, I’m anxious to try it with my next release!
Like many authors, I tried Bookbub ads, lost some money, and quickly stopped. I have been working to build my author business for several years and have taken numerous training courses, spending thousands of dollars. Oops! I mean a hundred or so… in case my husband sees this. I can’t believe I never thought to try (or learned in any course) the FANTASTIC ideas in the killer moves section. Those gems alone make the price of this book a steal. I’m so excited to try them out. Having this guide in-hand makes me confident enough to try Bookbub ads again. Oh, and yes, David, I’ll test!
