This is amusing, romantic and sweet. Charles is a bold, charming and impulsive rake. Abigail is a determined and sassy woman who doesn’t really like people. It is because she doesn’t like people that she first runs into Charles. While at a ball, she decides to sneak off to the library, he assumes that she meeting the man he wants to talk to so he follows her. The other man is not there, so Charles talks to Abigail, and becomes fascinated by her. He fascinates her as well, but she’s not interested in having anything to do with any man for any reason. Unfortunately for her, Charles is determined to get to know her better, especially if he can do it when she sneaks away from whatever amusement they’re at. It’s short sweet and entertaining.

The fifth book in the Bluestockings Defying Rogues series a well written story. I hope there will be a book in the future dealing with what the Earl would like to see happen! Charles Lindsay, the Earl of Coventry and Lady Abigail Wallace’s story is one that had me smiling at some of the things that happen to them. I thoroughly enjoyed this short start to this series with great characters, romance and a little intrigue. She and her sister were from Scotland and having their season in London. She didn’t want to be there, but wanted her sister to find a husband. However, the owner of a club for men and abrake, fell.for her. There were some complications, but the ending was great.

Abigail is in London to help her sister find a husband because as soon as she does she will be going home to Scotland to enjoy her life as a spinster but one night at a ball she meets Charles and Abigail enjoys harassing him. Charles meets a young lady and he can’t wait to find out who she is and that comes to pass when he sees his godmother in the park with said lady and after that he does everything he can to see her without incident but at a garden party they are at the duck pond and Abigail falls in then Charles. After the garden party everyone in the ton is talking about Abigail and blaming her saying Charles would never do that. Then Charles comes to another ball and he looks out for her and when he sees her walks directly to her and asks her to dance but as they are dancing he says something to upset her and she wants to run from his arms but he says the ton would talk more. A couple of days later Charles is at Abigail’s door trying to figure out how to make her forgive him but then he decides to go to his friend George’s house and George says I know what you need and Charles says I haven’t even told you what I need and then he gets a special license and goes to ask Abigail to marry him. Eight years later Charles is burying his best friend George and his wife and he is worried for his godson Jonas so he can’t wait to hold his wife and daughter. Awesome book.

Charles Lindsay, the Earl of Coventry, was looking over a building he thought would be ideal for a secret gentleman’s club. He negotiated with the solicitor, careful not to show that he really wanted the property. By instead showing a lack of interest or a concern that there was much work that would need to be done, he was negotiating a better price for himself. The solicitor agreed and was authorized to make the sale. Smiling, Charles headed home. He had an appointment to meet George, the Earl of Harrington, later so they could plan the development and reconstruction of the townhouse together. Charles wanted George to be the head of the club and, to avoid men cheating on their wives and bringing mistresses there, he made the first rule that only the club’s leader could be married. By the time George left, they had all of the rules of the club written. It was only a matter of time until it became a reality!
Lady Abigail Wallace was not pleased to be in London for a Season; she would much rather have stayed home in Scotland instead and found a good Scottish Laird as a husband. Her father seemed to identify more with the English, however, even though none of these gentlemen appealed to her. Even in temperament, she took after her father rather than her English-born mother. There was a commotion in the ballroom as someone most likely important arrived. The Earl and Countess of Harrington were announced, and behind them was a handsome man that all the ladies couldn’t take their eyes off. Some were almost squealing!
When Abigail’s sister was asked to dance, Abigail decided to go to the library and perhaps read a book. She didn’t notice Charles coming in behind her, as he was looking for a gentleman he wanted to invite to his club to see if he could help him get over the death of his wife that drove him to drink. Instead of the lovely woman falling all over him, as he was used to, she practically ignored him and wouldn’t give her name since she intended to return to Scotland and had no interest in knowing him! He wasn’t used to being so ignored and found himself intrigued enough that he intended to learn her name and more about her.
Walking with her sister, maid and footman, the ladies met with Lady Marvelle and were having a friendly talk. Charles and George were riding and Charles asked if George knew the redhead’s name. He said it was easy to find out – Lady Marvelle was Charles’ godmother and could introduce them! When Lady Marvelle had to leave for tea, a comment Abigail made — about no gentleman being interested in her and regardless she wouldn’t let herself be attracted — got Charles’ attention. He tried to make a wager with her that he could entice her to experience desire with him. She tried very hard to distract him from charming her as he was! He was far too tempting! And her insults toward him only made him chuckle. His comments toward her had been rude and suggestive – but she found that she had liked it! What was happening to her? He likewise couldn’t get her off his mind. Although he would not court her, he assured himself, he would be seeing much more of the intelligent, sharp-tongued woman!
This book is a prequel to “When an Earl turns Wicked”, and I loved it! Both main characters were strong and intelligent. Neither backed down from the other. Abigail did not want to be someone’s property, but to be respected and allowed to learn and be true to herself. Charles wanted to share his life with someone he could respect and admire. Grab your copy and see whether the two will come to the realization that just maybe they have found the one fate intended for them all along!
This book is absolutely stunning. There are only a handful of authors that I will do whatever I can to get my hands on their books. Ms. Brower is among them. This particular little story is another winner. It’s not terribly long, but it is a prequel. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book in exchange for a free copy.
Loved it! I loved going back to the beginning of the Wicked Earl’s Club to see how it all began. Charles and Abigail quickly became one of my favorite book couples. She a sassy Scottish Lass is just what Charles needed. Definitely recommend

This was a very enjoyable romance. I liked Abagail and Charles and I thought it was easy to feel the chemistry between them. A wonderful story of a Rake and a feisty Scottish Miss that are completely sure of what they want, until they meet and then they aren’t.
Charles is the Earl of Coventry. He establishes the Coventry Club where all the Wicked Earls hang out. He’s enjoying his freedoms when he’s intrigued by Abigail at a ball.
Abigail is twenty one and Scottish and is perfectly happy with a Scottish lord.
Something tells me her plans to return to Scotland may change.
