This review refers to Polymorphic Passion by Bette Hendrix and Jenee Robinson followed by a review of A Date with Death by K.A. Morse and M. Lizbeth, and Darnkess Awakened by Evelyn Belle. I will probably go back later for some of the other amazing authors here.
*Polymorphic Passion by Bette Hendrix and Jenee Robinson
This was by far and without comparison the creepiest story I have ever read! So scary and although paranormal, so incredibly realistic, it left me with creepy feelings and unpleasant goosebumps. I loved every moment of it! Freaking amazing.
The authors could not have done a better job on character development and the plot execution. So short and so much in there, it’s amazing. The alternating point of view contributes greatly to the character development and the creepiness factor, and seamlessly carries on the plot.
The story revolves around three people Rory, Scott and Calypso, although Calypso plays a lesser role in the whole story, but her mere presence determines the actions of the other two.
I cannot say much more without giving spoilers but I can say that I would not recommend reading this before going to bed. The authors took a scary realistic plot that could happen at any time and gave it a paranormal/urban fantasy twist and wow.
I could see this evolving into a creepy, super creepy series following the creepiest main character ever invented. Seriously fantastic idea, execution and writing style to match it.
*A Date with Death K.A. Morse and M. Lizbeth
This is a twisted tale of a woman who survives a severe car accident and becomes obsessed with Death. Her name is Crystal and she is scary beyond words.
I am not even sure here whether her obsession was so severe because she was trying to avoid dealing with the trauma of near death experience, or because the trauma just triggered her suppressed homicidal instincts, or whether her homicidal instincts were just means to an end. Brilliantly done.
The plot is simple and straight forward yet original, and incredibly scary in its simplicity. Apart from being scary, Crystal’s actions are incredibly disturbing because she does not see herself as doing anything wrong. And Death is not what he seems to be.
This was a fabulously written story with a brilliantly executed plot and great character development. The ending was incredibly surprising to Crystal, yet it was so logical and plausible that I expected it, but what comes next has me on the edge of my seat. I have my suspicions as to the direction of this series, but I am not sure and I can’t wait to find out. Fortunately, the next story Love and Death was announced, so I’ll be eagerly anticipating to see what happens next.
*Darkness Awakened by Evelyn Belle
This is an intriguing and suspenseful story with a slow buildup that unexpectedly blows up towards the end. It was a great read and I loved it. The author is not completely new to me, as I read her previous co-write, which I also loved, but this is the author’s solo debut and I can’t wait to read more of her work.
The tone of the story is somewhat sad because the main character, Alaina, suffered many personal losses and the pain and grief follow her. Her best friend Kerra is more carefree and enjoys life, always thinking of ways to lift Alaina’s mood. There is a lot of love there and they have a beautiful solid friendship.
All is well until Kerra comes up with an idea that turns out to be really really bad. The story, as expected, has an abrupt ending, and all I want to do is stalk the author for a sequel. The author’s writing is beautiful, her ideas are great, and I am glad I found her, as I plan to read everything she writes.
