Bake-off fever is in full-swing and Donna can’t help but have visions of becoming the next great baking star, but the competition is stiff, and someone is willing to kill to win. When one of the contestants is found dead, a twist of fate puts Donna at the center of the competition. That’s the perfect position to unravel the mystery, but only if she doesn’t get caught in the crosshairs.
This book from The Painted Lady Inn Mystery Series was just fantastic and well written. I just loved this book. I loved this book so much I laughed to I cried. Book was very well written and easy to read. Hated to put book down.
I highly recommend it and will read again.

Donna is baking in a cakewalk. She is keeping positive thoughts about winning it and becoming a star. But she isn’t the only one with this dream, and the others are amateurs at baking. When one of the contestants is found dead, that puts Donna right in the competition. But can she survive to find the killer, or will she be another person ends up ‘too well done’ and dead? You will need to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book.
A production company plans to film ‘America’s Best Baker’ for television in Legacy. It is a take-off on the British program ‘Great British Bake Off’. Some of the crew and contestants will be staying at the Painted Lady Inn. As the guests start to check in, one contestant. Emily Featherstone, is especially abrasive. She is recently divorced and her husband, Dalton Galllant, is not only part of the show, but is also booked at the Inn.
Before the first day of filming even starts, Emily is found dead.one of the trailers. Since they are now one contestant short, Donna gets an opportunity to join the show. In her mind, this is the prime position to be able to investigate Emily’s murder.
Who killed Emily? Why was she killed? Where was her husband when she was murdered? Can Donna solve the mystery without endangering herself?
Morgan Scott does a great job of keeping you guessing clear to the end. There are plenty twists, turns, and enough suspense to keep you interested right from the start.
A “reality” baking show comes to town and Donna is in the thick of things. This cozy mystery is skillfully written with a tight plot and a satisfying conclusion. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
I just love The Great British Baking Show so I really enjoyed a book with a reality baking show. The characters and story were fun.
I’ve not read anything by MK Scot before, but when I saw this book I knew I had to give it a read. I love mysteries, especially cozy mysteries and I recently started watching Great British Bake Off ( I know, I know, I’m so behind), so I knew this would be a brilliant read to blend those two loves together.
I adored the characters, even the more abrasive ones. The authors created a very well-round cast of characters, for on and off screen, in the story. This really meant that the story felt both real and excited. I was able to love and hate a variety of characters, making it harder to guess at who was responsible for the trail of murders. I loved that there were so many unique features, in each character.
The pace and storyline were excellent, and really made the read flow and feel exciting. That mixed with the level detail Scott adds to the story, with his background, meant that I found it both believable and hard to put down (I’m a physicist myself, so I find it hard to read mysteries that aren’t realistic).
Overall, this due really know how to create a story that is exciting and page-turning. I found it to be a brilliant read and would highly recommend.
This was a fun cozy. It has some of the “pat” items all cozies have; a handsome cop, a B&B, a neat little coastal town. But, at the same time, the storyline was a little different. The nosy amateur detective is married to that handsome cop and this time there is a real live Bake Off tv show being filmed. Of course, I love cooking and I love food, so all of the Bake-off successes and all of the flops were fun for me to read about.
I’m not saying that there aren’t lots of the same types of characters here as in lots of cozies, but I enjoyed M. K. Scott’s characters maybe a little more than the usual ones. They seemed like hard-working, everyday people with the same good and bad things we deal with every day, except for murder of course. While the story is being told, the author seems to have the characters set right in the scene doing what they would do every day. Just made it interesting but real.
I felt that the discovery of the bad guy or girl came upon me a little quickly. Maybe I wanted more drama. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book. It was well worth my time and a fun, relaxing read.
Cakewalk to Murder is the first book I have read by M K Scott and is, also, the tenth installment from The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries series. I loved this quick and fun read. This little mystery kept me entertained throughout with twists and turns mixed in with some humor that had me laughing.
I am giving Cakewalk to Murder five stars. I would love to catch up with the other stories in The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
Donna and her friends are all excited about their town being chosen as an alternate location for a new reality TV show. The show is to an American version of British Bake Off. The original location is eliminated as a choice, after local and national news picked up some unflattering stories.
Donna is hoping that she can be a contestant on the show to show off her skills and get some free advertising for her B&B. Of course, many of the crew and other contestants are staying at her B&B.
One of the contestants ends up dead just before the start of the show, and Donna’s dream of getting on the show comes true. She quickly learns that reality television is not all that it is cracked up to be, but she uses the time to do some amateur sleuthing to find out who the killer is. A series of events has her looking at several people as potential criminals.
On top of everything else, Donna’s son is talking about leaving home to continue his education, and her mother has run off to get married.
Plenty of excitement in this book! I didn’t want to put it down until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and I am certain that you will as well. You’ll love the characters and all of their quirks.
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion. I give this one 5 out of 5 stars.
Cakewalk to Murder is the 10th book in the Painted Lady series, showcasing innkeeper Donna and her detective husband, Mark. A new reality show, featuring a bake-off between contestants, comes to the small town of Legacy to tape the first season. Donna, an enthusiastic baker, ends up on the show due to the murder of one of the contestants. Her baking – and sleuthing – skills are put to the test with each day of taping.
This is an easy, fast read with an entertaining plot and interesting side stories involving secondary characters. I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion.
Cakewalk to Murder is to be the last story in The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries series. I feel like Mark and Donna have become friends I will really miss. Each book has been better than the last one so the series is ending on a really high note. Donna is stretch thin in this story. She had bakers and production crew staying at her inn. After a contestant is murdered, Mark suggests Donna as the replacement baker. Now Donna is baking for the show, baking for the inn guests and trying to solve the murder. The plot is well executed with many red herrings. I think you will really enjoy this book.
Donna just discovered that the American version of her favorite British baking show is coming to Legacy and the inn will be hosting three contestants. She’s disappointed, however, that all the bakers have been chosen, although a vacancy pops up soon … and Donna is able to snag a coveted spot.
Her fellow contestants are a motley crew, none of whom are the person they’re portraying. The grandmotherly Marjorie is only on the show to snag a third husband, while Harley is really an actress looking for her big break. Donna and Prashant are the only contestants with any real skill, but the focus is soon on the injured and dying participants.
Donna’s curiosity and sleuthing skills lead her to a surprising suspect whose competence in their chosen profession is minimal, but their delusion and murder skills are second to none. Wyatt is also at the top of her game as she closes out the Painted Lady series with a celebratory conclusion to Donna and Mark’s adventures.
After another contestant in a baking contest is murdered, Donna, a replacement contestant and a B&B owner, tries to make sense of the murder. Hopefully she won’t become a target, too. I just loved the way this mystery unraveled. The plot was well thought out. I loved the interactions between Donna and others such as Mark. This book had me laughing and was a lot of fun. I am disappointed because I heard that this is the last book for this series and it was the first one that I have read. I am just going to have to go back and read the others as this was a very good mystery read for me.
It stands to reason that when Donna finds out a baking show is coming to Legacy, she is both excited and disappointed that it is too late to enter as a contestant. She has to settle for attending the very first day. Since she has three contestants and a couple camera men staying at the Inn, she makes it a point to have an especially wonderful breakfast for her guests. Figures they had to leave at the crack of dawn and missed her offerings. Then Donna, her mother, and sister-in-law go to the cook-of only to have the make-up girl scream and the show be cancelled for the day. When Mark shows up on the scene, Donna knows something happened…
With the murder of a contestant, Donna is lucky enough to become a replacement baker thank’s to Mark’s suggestion. Only problem is, he forgot to tell Donna until after she gets a phone call before dawn telling her she is late to make-up! And the fun begins as Donna “helps” Mark with his job and becomes the granny baker persona required for the show.
This tenth book in the series is bittersweet because the author has announced it is the final book in the series. Another reason is because it is funnier than past books! The main characters have all undergone growth and development throughout the series. They are able to make jokes about their own character flaws, and true personalities are shining. What is a terrific series is concluded in an exceptionally good story, making me realize how much I will miss new adventures at the Painted Lady Inn!
CAKEWALK to MURDER… M.K Scott
Donna hadn’t talked to her mother or Janice yet,so didn’t know the news till Mark her husband came home. He was a detective and loved to question her. American television wants a similar show like the British Bake Off, and they were coming to their quaint village. To win, would be the bragging rights, that you would always claim to. In article, your business it would always be mentioned. All the contestants are already chosen, only if one drops dead would she be in. Involved once again in a murder, she figured it out. The person wanted to kill off the rival, now to get a confession, without being killed herself. A good plot, and interesting of how she figured out why.
