Warning: Mom rave in 3, 2, 1…
J.Z. is my son. Still, if I didn’t love the story, I wouldn’t say anything. But I would never fib to readers.
With that out of the way… Richard is *the man.* He’s that everyday guy who gets scared, who knows he isn’t equipped, but gets it done anyway. I love, love, LOVE him.
I liken Richard to the guys in Supernatural, if the Supernatural guys weren’t so big and buff and cocky. lol
Richard is such a great character with an amazing moral compass, loads of compassion, hidden depths of bad-assed-ness, and a BRAIN. Such a brain.
In moments of panic he’s able to think and use what he knows to get ahead.
The wicked supernatural things… egads. My kid has an imagination. Super-creepy.
And then there’s the Wight – this big gruesome monster who can rip off heads, but in the first book, Richard decided he was just misunderstood and started feeding him pizza and…now they’re buds. Still, the Wight will make you laugh out loud. (And he still wants to eat people…as well as other creatures.)
I love so many things about this world, including that book 3 is being written now. Can’t wait!
What a great story with well written characters and just the right amount of creepy.
Our favorite Witch Hunter is back for the next adventure. Wight continues to be hilarious. We meet some new characters in this fast paced storyline. Foster does a great job of entwining comedy and drama into his story and making it work! Can’t wait to read the next installment!
Holy wow! This is the second of the trilogy, and each book just gets better and better! Richard has REALLY been put through a ringer this time, but has also come into his own in a spectacular fashion. The wight is his usual snarky, sassy self, and with the addition of a few new characters it sets this story off into one roller coaster of an adventure! This is an unexpectedly complex story that sees many different genres skillfully blended into one cracker of a tale, that has something to offer just about any literary taste. I loved it, can’t wait for the next, and thank you so much for the opportunity to review this jewel!
“The immortals. They’re waking”
Our favorite witch hunter is back in Gods and Monsters, and better than ever! This book picks up after Into the Outside and is told in a kind of story telling way by Richard, so it’s a bit like a flashback type story in parts.
Richard is still hilarious, still a dork, still kinda fat, but he has grown. He is smarter, and now acknowledges what he is capable of without being cocky. He has become a bit restless, though, and his need to make things right consistently leads to trouble. But damn, do I love Richard! His love for his friends and this drive to do right gets to me. He is extremely relatable, and definitely a favorite character. We are also introduced to several new characters, both friend and foe, monster and god, and we get more character growth for those who’ve returned. The Wight is back, and a monstrous, moody creature who is also sarcastically hilarious in it’s own way as a “thing of darkness.”
I have to give it to JZ Foster, topping book 1 didn’t seem possible, but you did it sir. I laughed so much, learned so much (the mythology in this is astounding!!), screeched in excitement in a very specific part, and yes, I cried. Gods and Monsters is so good in every way, and I’m already itching to see what happens next!
It’s a wonderful night for a witching folks, make sure you read this book!
Fighting for his life Richard relives his encounters in which put him in the position hes in. When Richard realised that it’s up to him to save the life of others, it dawns on him that the Wight is not just a creature but a friend.
Foster has done it again yall. Another great book, another must read.
It all began with a gutter witch and the god Februus who holds her contract. Witch Hunter: Gods and Monsters finds our hero Richard Fitcher in the hospital, deathly ill and not recovering the way he should be. The mysterious Order has sent Mayra to record his story for their archives. And what a story it is: he’s chained a wight to do his bidding, bartered with a daeva and killed a plague witch, all by himself with no help or training from the Order.
I loved this second outing with my favorite witch hunter and his wight (best character EVER!). There’s lots of lore here and details about runes and magic that bring the story to life. The business with the mirrors creeped me out! I already had a phobia about them from horror films and Mr. Foster just amped that up! There is plenty of humor here along with the scares. There were a few cameos from J.Z.’s other books, which I loved. I highly recommend this one. If you haven’t read Witch Hunter: Into the Outside yet I can recommend that book, also.
Foster does it again with this fast-paced and entertaining story. Richard is back. My favorite wight is back. Characters both familiar and new come together under Foster’s magical pen to make you laugh, make you wonder, and make you cringe. This combination Dark Urban Fantasy and Horror Comedy has twists, turns, humor, and gag inducing imagery.
Foster’s trademark vivid storytelling and engaging characters pull you in to this engrossing tale and keep your mind in the world of Witch Hunter long after you have read the final sentence. This is fun to read. It is entertaining. It flows well. It takes the reader on an adventure of emotional and intellectual reactions as horror and humor play keep away with your mind.
Highly recommended.
I got this as an ARC for an honest review.
This is the 2nd book in a great series that has a perfect combination of humor, horror and urban fantasy. This continues where the first book left off.
Richard, the mighty witch Hunter, has done it again…he has managed to make near immortal beings angry, only this time he got some help. Elena is a gutter witch or in laymons terms… A Dimensional Junkie that pretty much is into some very dark magic. She joins up with Richard because they may be able to help each other out with alligned goals….but is she trustworthy?
As always the Wight is eating anything it can and has even offered strategies on how to best an army of..uhm…squirrels…
Richard and friends are simply trying to fix a mistake he made dealing with a daeva. But will Richard’s choices make him triumphant or will this mess actually cost him his life this time? You gotta pick these books up to find out. Loved both books and highly recommend!!!
Richard Fitcher is the Witch Hunter. Although this book stands alone, we met Richard in the first book and learned he thought he was playing a game similar to Dungeons & Dragons. He studied the books. Then it became real and he had to use that knowledge to fight for his life and the lives of his companions.
The book is written as flashbacks. In the present Mayra has been sent by the Order to interview Richard. He is in the hospital, dying of mysterious and terrible things. The Order wants to know what he did, and where the artifacts he collected are.
Richard has been a bad boy. He killed a god, he enslaved and then killed a wight, he is showing signs of being very powerful. But he had no training from the Order. They are at various times curious and angry and covetous of his artifacts. Specifically, they want the Deicide Blade: the god killer blade.
As Richard talks to Mayra he tells her of the evil he has battled. She becomes upset by his actions because he did not follow the strict rules the Order has established. But he did what he thought was necessary to protect himself and his companions, while maintaining his own code of righteousness.
This is a horror novel, with gods and witches and wights and werewolves and all kinds of evil. It is also quite funny. The enslaved wight is more a companion than anything else. He is addicted to junk food. He does not understand human idioms, and there is a running thread through much of the story where the wight hears them say they are going to order & eat Chinese. He interprets this to mean they are going to eat Chinamen. He does not understand why this idea upsets Richard. To him, eating your companions is a respectful thing.
