Paranormal fantasy romance isn’t really a mix up of genres that I’d usually read, however, this particular one is a remake of Beauty and the Beast which happens to be my favorite fairy tail so I couldn’t pass it up! (yeah yeah I know, a writer who likes Bell the best, go figure!) Anyway, the premise sounded promising, and the characters unique… lucky for me, my curiosity led me to a one of a kind read.
Amarice, or Ama is a seamstress with a bit of magical blood-line in her. The books starts out as her working for the king and queen, completely unaware of the powerfully magical destiny that was bestowed on her at birth. The queen winds up sending her blindly on a mission to practically save the world and she is befuddled, terrified and insanely confused, yet compliant. I mean, it was foresaw that she and she alone could stop the darkness from consuming everything and everyone good and wholesome… soooooo what other chance did she have, right? She finds herself charging ahead, into a dangerously magical forest with only her will, and a bundle of sewing needles left to her by her dying mother.
What Ama finds in the forest is nothing short of crazy, but captivating. The creatures range from so much more than good and evil. There’s dragons, werewolves, elves, strange cross-breed creatures of course, and oh so much more. What’s naturally a challenge, though, is that many people in the forest know that Amarice is there for a reason. Some can sense/feel her magic, her mission and her purpose, and some have also foreseen her coming. But, who can she trust, as she’s been told to trust no one. Everyone is deceitful, and most are out to get her. Ama spends a lot of time running and a LOT of time drugged – by more than one being at that.
Now, here is where it gets twisty. When you think of Beauty and the Beast, naturally you picture the Beast from the original fairy tale. In So Sweet, Andi Lawrencova has given him more than one character. In fact, she’s given the Beast an entire family of characters. A family cursed, and plagued with the worst inner turmoil to match their outar turmoil. Ama is pulled in every direction and spends the majority of her time in an out of mind – somewhat out of body – type of experience. Danger lurks around every corner, and two brothers in particular battle for her affection. Only it isn’t always her affection they’re shooting for. Her destiny is greater than the brothers, and the curse, but who will she believe. As one will promise her safety and deception, the other will deliver with secrets at heart. Who will Ama choose, and how will her needles come into play? Read to find out!! This book is very unique. Here and there I was a little confused, but the story line as a whole kept me captivated, and the ending isn’t at all what I saw coming! An overall 4 rating for me.
