In Mary’s world there are simple truths.
The Sisterhood always knows best.
The Guardians will protect and serve.
The Unconsecrated will never relent.
And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth.
But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood … about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power. And, when the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness.
Now, she must choose between her village and her future, between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

I read this about a decade ago, and I STILL can’t get it out of my mind. Absolutely one of my favorite zombie stories–not just in books, but also movies.
Okay, I’m NOT into zombies, but I’d heard so much about this book that I gave it a whirl. And was pleasantly surprised! although I was sad at end. I still enjoyed the novel, the creepy setting, the cool fence, and the constant danger. *shivers*
I really liked this book. It’s a quick read and fast paced. There were times when I had to restrain myself from looking down the page to see what was going to happen. Already picked up the next 2 books in the series and am looking forward to reading those as well.
I really enjoyed this take on zombies.
This book pulled me in from the very beginning. I got Agnes at the End of the World vibes. Mary is a great character. I experienced so many emotions while reading this. I cannot wait to read the next one. I would definitely recommend this one.
so interesting
The Forest of Hands and Teeth is a zombie story that starts in a village of surviving humanity several generations after the apocalypse. So this isn’t post-apocalyptic in the sense of it being right after the fall, but at the point where humanity has rebuilt society to the best of their ability. If this is where the book stayed, I would have liked …
Mary’s village is a small outpost against The Unconsecrated, the restless dead who will stop at nothing to enter the fences and feed on the living. As far as the villagers know, they’re the last vestiges of humanity left in the world. But Mary wonders. She grew up on her mom’s stories, passed down through generations, of a place called The Ocean, …
A zombie book that is about so much more than zombies. Fantastic escapist literature. This is the first of a series but the three I have read are about different people and circumstances within the framework of the zombie scenario which makes each a compelling read. If you want to just forget about life for awhile, this is a great start.
This book made me cry in a good way.
One of my all time favorites
There are not many books in my past twenty odd years of reading that have scared me to the point I was looking over my shoulder as I read, expecting the monsters from the book to be standing there. There are two books to this day that still send chills down my spine. One is The Stand by Stephen King. When I read that book, I tricked myself into …
I have the hard cover book just to read it anywhere
It has been a long time since I first read the book, but I really enjoyed this read. <3
