An epic tale across the realms. A deadly power that spans millennia. A story of struggle and betrayal, this adventure is told through the patchwork past of Marvel’s most misunderstood mischief-maker of all time: Loki: Trickster. God of Asgard. Brother. This is the first of three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential of popular … popular characters in the Marvel Universe. The novels focus on exploring the duality of heroism in specific character stories from the Marvel Universe.

The Review
A fascinating read, the story truly dives into the complex mind and behavior of one of Marvel Comics’ most incredible villains. The exploration of Loki as a character was great to see unfold. From his deep relationship of humor and overshadowing between him and his brother Thor to the understanding and connection he feels with characters like Amora on Asgard and Theo on Earth, Loki explores not only his bonds with others and the trust he places in them but the fine line between heroism and villainy that has steered him back and forth so often in the comics and MCU. The only thing I’d loved to have seen is a more accurate portrayal of his sexuality as according to comic creators in the past and now more recently the MCU, as he has been confirmed to be bisexual rather than pansexual, and it is so crucial to have accurate representation throughout the narrative.
The historical and mythological aspect of the narrative was a big win for me. As a fan of Norse mythology and the history of 19th century London, it was great to see such an in-depth look into these settings and the cultural differences between the two worlds as well, from the early exploration of the organization that would become SHIELD to the acceptance of sexuality and gender identity in Asgard as opposed to the lack of acceptance on Earth during this time. These important social themes and identity storylines really helped elevate the magic and mystery aspects of the novel.
The Verdict
An engaging, action-packed, and brilliant narrative, author Mackenzi Lee’s “Loki: Where Mischief Lies” is a fantastic study of the classic Avengers villain and how we as a society can become responsible for the way people become villains through our own actions. Although some more character growth and development for Loki would have been great to see as far as his identity, the overall narrative and story do a great job of showcasing representation overall and creating an exciting new chapter in Marvel history. Loki, the trickster god, and all the negative that goes into his story – could have been a better person, but then, would we read about him? My heart was breaking for him, I kept hoping he would do the right thing. In the end I guess he did – sort of.
I really enjoyed this book, a first in a series. I hope the next book comes soon.
This was really entertaining in that it gave us a look into what shapes Loki’s destiny. The whys of how he acts and what he thinks. He didn’t begin as a villain, but his family helped that identity take root and cultivated it. It’s really quite tragic! I find the idea of Odin’s being all seeing as playing a peculiar role in Loki’s faults. Had Odin not been gifted with future sight, would he have cast Loki is such an unwanted part? Loki doesn’t deserve the history that Midgard’s humans have depicted. I both liked and was irritated by Thor in this. I saw so many worthy qualities and a deep love for his family. But he wasn’t willing to do the right thing if it defied his father, and that makes his shine a little less bright. The author did a fabulous job in keeping with what is common Loki knowledge and weaving an unputdownable tale. I adore Loki! I’ve always just wanted to hug the dude because honestly he really just needs someone in his corner cheering him on and encouraging him to be better! Theo was an interesting side character. He really did have such a huge heart. As this is a Loki novel and the god is known for his indulgences in both sexes, it should come to no surprise that Loki feels attraction to both genders. And though I wouldn’t say that this contains heavily M/M moments, there are some glances, some hand touching and a kiss. I absolutely enjoyed this twisty and surprising look into a younger Loki. Well done to Ms. Lee!!!
Author did Loki a disservice. Loki deserves better.
Anyway, Loki in Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco is far superior than the Loki poorly portrayed in this one.
