The second Well House book revisits the Carson family nearly two decades after Ben Carson entered a dark, supernatural world to save his wife and unborn child from the forces of evil. Ben may have triumphed over evil the first time around, but 17 years is long enough to wait for revenge. Evil is back, and has its sight’s set on destroying Ben once and for all.
I wouldn’t say it was really that important to read the first instalment before The Well House 2 as you get recaps when necessary and you’re guided really well through the plot and characters. Another really good fantasy novel from MS Matassa that explores the lengths an ordinary man will go through to protect his family, you will have to read the novel for yourself to find out if he is successful.
The Well House II: The Revenge by M.S. Matassa finds Ben Carson at peace with life. It has been over seventeen years since he fought the devil for his wife and daughter. But now the nightmares have returned. Satan has new tricks waiting for Ben and his family faces dangers in the most unusual places. Time will tell who gets the revenge; Satan or Ben Carson. The novel is a test of faith as old characters come together with new members to fight Satan.
M.S. Matassa resumes the fight between Satan and Ben Carson in The Well House II: The Revenge. The story line continues along the original plot in this series, but finds Satan one step ahead of Ben. The pace is quick as Satan, aka Jack St. Louis, moves his plan into action rapidly and takes advantage of the element of surprise. Overall, the characters are rich, well-rounded, and keep the reader in suspense. Matassa keeps the reader on edge as the characters communicate through dreams and experience terrifying nightmares. You will view your dreams in a new light.
Assuming you read the first one, you can see that Matassa has grown as a writer between the two books. The style is a tad different, and the story is less niche/campy and I feel caters to a wider audience. There is still the same elements from the first (overtly supernatural fight against evil) but it is written in a way that is more accessible to those that may not be immediate fans of horror or such a blatant good versus evil tale.
The real growth here is that the prose is much stronger. The plot carries at the same, strong pace. Matassa really hit his stretch with this book.
We again see the Carson family, particularly Ben, many years after the first, fighting otherworldly forces. Rather than jumping right into the nightmare fodder, Matassa sets the scene and eases us into a pretty fast-paced story and allows us to start off giving the Carson’s a break. At least for the first chapter. This is different from the first book, but almost welcome reading these back to back. Somehow Matassa still manages to grab us early on, even if he lets us take a breath between paragraphs this time.
After reading the first book in this series I was totally looking forward to reading The Well House II, disappointed? Absolutely not! it was even better than his first novel, fast paced, well written with amazingly captivating characters. The book had me on the edge of my seat with plenty of plot twists and turns. I highly recommend reading this book and cannot wait to get started on the next book in the series. 5 stars.
This is the first sequel to The Well House and Ben is again forced to save his family from the ultimate evil that he escaped from many years earlier.
After reading and thoroughly enjoying the first book in the series “The Well House” I couldn’t wait to get started on this, the second book in the series. A clever plot with some of the same likeable characters, again this is a fast paced book that will keep you on the edge of your seat! I really got immersed in this story and felt the horror and the shock which made me very jumpy!
A very entertaining read that will appeal to a broader audience. Highly recommend.

Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion
Colorado author Michael S. Matassa earned his degrees from Regis College in Denver and the University of Colorado School of Law and is an attorney and Municipal Court Judge in Arvada, Colorado. THE WELL HOUSE was his debut novel though he has also written several short stories and a screenplay. Now The Well House Series continues with THE REVENGE He states discovered the well house in the late summer of 1994, standing by a field of corn on a small farm just south of Brighton Colorado, where it still stands today. His nom de plume is M.S. Matassa.
The author’s skillful scene painting provides the curtain raiser for this novel – Deep in the lush forest in the Pyrenees Mountains, in a rustic cottage, a glass orb sat on its stand inside an oak cabinet in a locked room in the cellar. The pine needles swayed back and forth in the darkness as a gentle breeze blew through the trees outside, making a peaceful swishing sound. The orb was at rest, its milky liquid barely moving under the cool surface. About midnight a small dot of orange, no bigger than the tip of a pin, appeared deep in the center of the orb. As the dot grew, the milky liquid glowed with a pale orange cast, turning dark reddish-orange. The orb moved, ever so slightly, on its stand and then was still. Outside the cottage, the breeze grew stronger, and the peaceful sound became a howling gale.’ And it is this gift with prose that springs this story into life.
The author’s synopsis reflects on the story that began in Volume I – ‘The ultimate evil comes to earth in a human body to carry out a sinister plan of retribution against the man who defeated him seventeen years earlier. The Revenge, the second book by M.S Matassa is a great continuation from the first novel which I loved. I was excited when I found out that this book had been written. I am always worried if a sequel as good as the first book, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through this one and I struggled to put it down. This book kept me on the edge and it met all my expectations for a sequel. This is a great book for those who love adventure, as the Carson family provide plenty of that here. The author did a great job with the characters creating suspense and plenty of excitement. The characters is rich and established following the treads from book 1. I agree with what others have stated you will view your dreams differently. Looking forward to book 3…
I loved the first novel in ‘The Well House’ series, so moved pretty quickly onto the second book, entitled ‘The Revenge’. The plot takes place 17 years after the first novel, which followed Ben Carson’s triumph against evil to save his wife and unborn daughter. In the 17 years that have passed, the Carson family has enjoyed a wonderful life, but evil is back for them. Ben will once again have to take another terrifying journey through the dark, encountering dangerous creatures and the forces of evil. What fate awaits for the Carson family at The Well House?
MS Matassa has managed to write a sequel that is just as exciting and surprising as the original. Even though we have the same cast of characters and any of the same settings, the plot is still fresh and unpredictable. I read it in a couple of days and now I’m onto book three. Without giving too much away, I can’t wait to find out what happens to Taylor in the third instalment of the series.
After reading Matassa’s first novel there was no way I was missing out on the next book one so I quickly moved on to read The Revenge. Like the first, this book had me captivated and in real suspense. Larger than life characters, some clever plot twists all put together with incredible imagination. Colour me impressed, and I can’t wait to see where his creative storytelling will take me next.
