Part one of the epic two-part conclusion to the Ruthless People and Children of Vice series… look is where you go.
So I ask again, how well do you think you know the Callahans? Do you really think you understand Melody, Liam, or even Ethan?
I have to wonder—will your mind be able to handle it?
We haven’t met yet, but ready or not, here I come. The true queen of Chicago.
For now, you may call me Calliope.
Catch up on the Children of Vice Series:
CHILDREN OF VICE, Book 1: “From the Ruthless, Vice shall Rise.”
CHILDREN OF AMBITION, Book 2: “Show me a strong woman and I’ll show you the scars on her soul that made her so.”
CHILDREN OF REDEMPTION, Book 3: “I do not come in peace.”

Best read I’ve had this year. If not, best mafia read ever. Part 2 is probably going to top it but that’s for entirely another story. Apparently, between parts 1 and 2, the former is the tamer one. IMAGINE. The intricacy of the storyline, the twists until the very end…the crazy smart, crazy badass and just plain crazy crazy characters.
I must say I have little to no reservations when it comes to replacing Ivy…sorry, not sorry? I don’t hate her and I do love book 1. But after Vicious Minds, it has been obvious how she’s not just fit to live a ruthless mafia life. And in the thick of it all, in the grand scheme of all events, she’s been a major block against Ethan and his family.
Tbh, I am debating whether to read book 1 before diving into this one. But I don’t think I need it after all. This one is from entirely another world. I swear. I don’t think I will be able to reread book 1 in the near future. Maybe once I settled down about this uber genius series. (Likely scenario. Not.)
Ethan…he’s also another entirely different man compared from all the previous books. And I very much prefer his much complex character. And I say complex because who would’ve thought there is a tender, patient and kind of desperate side to him? Even more amazing that this read further emphasized the Melody-like part of his persona.
And then there is Calliope. She’s the HER in my ultimate hero. I have a serious girl-crush on her. She’s everything.
Melody stans, don’t hate me for saying this but imo Calli is probably much…crazier. Melody is the in-your-face ruthless badass mafia queen. Calli, on the other hand, looks like a cinnamon roll but can (and will) most definitely kill you. Melody, having to rebuild her grandfather’s empire early on, has to look and act like she’s got the biggest dick of them all. Hell, she could trump any other mafia man with her big dick energy. Meanwhile, Calli works behind the scenes. She’s as mastermind-esque as they come. But throughout her life, she needs to contain all that crazy because she has plans on top of plans to execute, just at the right time.
I just can’t imagine the patience and dedication she invests for…everything else…to work out. The guts, the cunning, the brain. I swear she really is perfect.
Meanwhile, here I am, dying to read Part 2. And I’m going batshit crazy in my poor attempt.
PS how cute that ethan and calli reminds me of liam and melody; they both love shooting each other. crazy runs in the family yo
PPS I really want to explore the daddy-daughter relationship between ethan and gigi. ughhh my heart
GOD.. this book is messed up and catching that I couldn’t stop reading it. The author has outdone herself with this book. I though the story of Melody and Liam was different and so full of mysteries but Calliope is just a whole different story… just when I though that I knew the ending, it changes and I am left speechless and still not believing what just happened… Calli might be insane but Melody is the definition of insanity..Melody is still my very favourite character nobody and I mean nobody not eve calliope can outsmart her.. Melody knows what is happening, after all she is the QUEEN
You are going on for another ride of your life. JJ McAvoy is a genius storyteller and blows me away every time she releases a book
J.J. McAvoy has continued to blow my mind with her storytelling of the Callahans. From the first book Ruthless People (in July of 2017) I have been riveted to this series. Read each book the moment it was in my hands, and this book is no different.
I am unsure how J.J. continues to weave this web of lies, deception of the Callahan family and I really don’t care…just keep writing.
There is so much to this book that is a spoiler that I just don’t want to spoil it for anyone but one thing I can say is that you need to read every book in this series…in order. I know that your TBR list is long…but seriously – push everything aside and read this series. Start from Ruthless People and work your way through this family. Each book relates to each other, spinning the web of lies, lust, love, and family.
This series could be my most suggested series I have ever read – ITS. THAT. GOOD!
“In the words of my brother…this family is fucked up.”
