The aura of suspense increasingly bumped up my anxiety, notch by excruciatingly-taut notch. The palpable tension held me in thrall. The twists made me audibly gasp in shock. And, the fast pace of the wildly-captivating plot kept me swiping the pages feverishly.
What a crazy ride this scary book took me on! It is a real twisted, dark, spooky, brilliant, chilling story that reminded me of a great Stephen King story. The then and now format kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing as I navigated all of the twists and turns in this riveting page turner. If your looking for a really good horror/thriller to read, this is it! Great job Author Stuart James!
My usual reading genres are historical crime, thrillers and, every now and then, some ladies fiction. Horror NEVER comes into the reading equation. As a child, I was very much into my horror stories and films but reading ‘The Lair’ by James Herbert in the 1980’s put me off for life!
Or so I thought…
I saw this book being mentioned within a number of book clubs and on several occasions and something about it appealed to me. I can’t say what exactly but I decided to high-jump over my usual boundaries and give it a whirl.
I can tell you now that I was not disappointed. I found myself gripped by the story from the start and it took great willpower not to speed-read ahead to see what was coming next.
The story is told from a variety of view points and also in past and present tense. It is never, however, confusing. Apart from, maybe, trying to work out how everything slots together. As with any book of this nature, half of the fun is trying to work out how it’s all going to end. Well, let me tell you now, don’t bother! Don’t even go there – as they say! There are more twists and turns in this book than you’d find in a mountain of spaghetti. Every page sends you spinning off in a completely different direction. It was wonderful and wholly gripping.
All that aside, I think the author does himself a disservice by placing this in the Horror genre for I would personally describe as a dark, a very dark, an exceptionally dark, psychological thriller. To my mind, Horror should have more gore and be far more graphic than the detail given in this book. Don’t get me wrong, Mr James doesn’t hold back in his descriptions but he always stops at that sweet point where the imagination takes over and the reader finds they are conjuring up thoughts which are far more horrific than any description could do justice to.
If you like your books to have you on the edge of your seat and gripping your favourite tipple to you tightly, then this book will not disappoint for it gives you that – in spades! I’m off now to download Mr James’ debut novel, ready to read once my heart rate has settled back into its pre-Stuart James state.
Great book. Keeps your attention when you start reading it.
This book kept me up all night! Undeniably the most suspenseful, heart pounding and twisted book I’ve read in a very long tIme. Highly recommended!!
This book thrilled me the whole way through. I read it twice in 4 days. So twisting and suspenseful!
I have conflicted feelings about this book. One part of me loved it. The idea of it was great. There were lots of surprises. But then there were also a lot of moments I was confused. I think if the writing was structured better this would be a top read for me. No way am I slamming this book. If you like stories that make your heart beat fast then this is a good read. I did have moments where I couldn’t turn the page fast enough. But there were also times I wondered if it would go anywhere. With this story I suggest sticking with it. The characters will frustrate you with their choices but you will find yourself rooting for them. Then when so much is exposed near the end you’ll be in shock. The ending may even shock you.
For the most part, this was a pretty decent book, but it didn’t exactly meet my expectations. Though that doesn’t mean that others won’t absolutely love it. It just wasn’t exactly my thing.
One of the girls I blog with wanted us to do our own little book club type thing, just the two of us. Where we read the same book, a chapter a night, then discuss the next day. This was the book we chose to start it off with.
The timeline skipped around, back and forth, and then finally came together at the end, but by that time I was a more than a little confused. I still quite a few questions, that weren’t entirely answered, just more along the lines of hinted to, and the ending left me a little unsatisfied. Almost as if it was just quickly wrapped up.
For the longest time, I really thought I was reading two separate stories, each one decent, but I had no idea they were meant to go together. Until about half way through the book. Hence my confusion. The timelines began to bleed into one another a bit, which, at first, confused me even more. But it eventually even out and finally made sense to me.
There were a lot of twists and turns in this book, things that you don’t really expect. I wouldn’t really claim this as a horror, even though that’s what it was labeled as when we picked it. It’s more along the lines of a psychological thriller. There were several times I was screaming at my Kindle because the characters were doing something so stupid it was almost driving me crazy! That part was very fun. I do enjoy talking back to my books or the TV.
The ending was surprising, also sad. But it also felt a little unsatisfying. Too easy. This story has definite potential though.
3 out of 5 stars.
This book will scare your socks off!
It kept me up at night trying to figure out what was happening. The way that Stuart wrote it, this thriller had me guessing until nearly the end of the book. It is very suspenseful and a bit cringe worthy with it’s graphic descriptions. He has another five star book here! I can’t wait till the next one!
A little too strange for me
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and man he keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I haven’t read many thriller/suspence books to give an accurate rating but I’m giving the author a 5 Star for keeping me glued to the book.
The book has multiple POVs and past and present chapters. Contains graphic event details.
