RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT from Booksirens FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin’ With M. Brennan.
A very good PI mystery. I rather enjoyed knowing who the “bad guy” was from the beginning and seeing things from his point of view; as twisted as that may be. There were realistic characters who were easy to relate to, natural-sounding dialogue and plenty of twists and turns. One of the semi-minor issues I had was how Reggie got out of prison and how the bad guy managed to get away with his crimes for so long. (I don’t want to say too much in case it becomes a spoiler.) The issue of how Reggie was set up seemed fair-fetched to me. Maybe it’s possible, but if so I would have liked a little more explanation so that it didn’t seem so “out there”. I realize that fiction is just that but I need it to at least make sense to me. The other issue I had was with typos. The book could use the services of a good proofreader. The errors weren’t so frequent that they interfered with my reading, but they were noticeable. All in all, an enjoyable book and if I come across any more of Mr. Kerr’s books I will be sure and check them out.
I received an advance review copy from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion. I would like to thank them and Mr. Kerr for allowing me the opportunity to read this book.
Dead Ringers by Wayne Kerr
This is the 1st book in a series and man is it a great way to start a series! Reggie Swann was serving time for killing her therapist when her conviction was overturned due to new evidence now Reggie is investigating a murder that may be linked in ways to the murder she was convicted off. This is a great diabolical mystery that I found myself totally immersed in and am looking forward to reading what comes next for Reggie and Black Swann Investigations! I was given this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow! What a phenomenal introduction to a series that I’m so glad fell into my hands. I have always been a fan of police procedurals that follow serial killers, and this one was that and so much more!
This is an intense thriller that is told from dual perspectives, which adds incredible layers to the growing suspense and builds anticipation for the final showdown. The majority of the story follows Reggie as she starts her life over after serving time in prison for a crime she claims to have never committed. We never see her as the homicide detective she was prior to her conviction, but spending time with her during some experiences she encounters while in prison is completely unnerving, calling into question how much we can believe and making her almost unreliable. Once she is released, it is absolutely amazing to watch her in action as she works to track down the truth in a case involving a husband vehemently denying any responsibility in his wife’s suspected disapperance/murder. A few chapters sporadically placed throughout the story gives you a peek into the killer’s mind. It was unnerving, chilling, graphic, disturbing, and everything that I love in serial killer stories! The author truly showcased mastery of the first person point of view with these two narratives!
I also appreciated the author’s ability to create such compelling and empowering examples of female relationships. Every woman in the story is well rounded, fully developed, engaging, and they all treat each other with respect and admiration. I don’t typically make it a point to call out gender treatment in a book, but when it’s done as well as this, it’s certainly worth mentioning!
I’m also not one to judge a book by its cover, but this was art unto itself!
This well written plot was fast-paced, fascinating to read, hard to put down, and really set some high expectations for the rest of the series, which I’m looking forward to getting started on soon! So if you’re in the mood for the dark, gritty, and dangerous, definitely give this book a read!
I received a copy of this book for free from the author. This is my honest and thoughtful review.
This story is about a Toronto homicide detective who is framed for the murder of her psychologist doctor while she was on the force. The story starts out where Alex Swann is in prison and how things are going for her. She has been there for ten years now and has another court date coming up. This time she has a new lawyer who works for the CAJE- Christian Advocates for Justice Enterprises. Her mother got them for her because she is the only one who believes her daughter is innocent of the charges. She gets out of prison on what some want to call a technicality. While she is now out, she is bound and determined to prove she is innocent, but first, she is hired by someone’s lawyer whose client says he has been set up in his wife’s disappearance/murder. There are some pretty amazing things that go on throughout the book. All I will say is you gotta read this one! I would give it more than 5 stars if that was possible! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
