This is one of the few books where I actually liked Mrs. Bennet. She was a tad more reasonable than she usually is. 🙂
“The soul of sweet delight, can never be defiled.” –William Blake
Our story opens in London at Darcy House with an injured Mr. Bennet. Georgiana’s dog Dash tripped Mr. Bennet while on the stairs causing him to fall and break his leg. Darcy’s physician advised that Mr. Bennet not be moved for a couple of weeks at least. Darcy offered to send for Mrs. Bennet and her other daughters and invited them to stay at Darcy House. Oh, dear, bless his heart. Miss Elizabeth was a bit worried about her new-found relationship with Mr. Darcy. She didn’t want her mother and the behavior or her younger sisters to ruin it.
“Beauty is the bait which with delight allures man to enlarge his kind.” –Socrates
This story gave the reader a new side to Mr. Bennet and most of all, Mrs. Bennet. He seemed a bit more and she was a bit less than canon. Elizabeth marveled at the chance to see her parents in a different setting. Mr. Bennet was, for once, out of his bookroom and forced to converse and interact with people. Mrs. Bennet was away from her sister Phillips and the gossips of Meryton and found herself in an environment that required better behavior from her. We were also given a bit of backstory on how M/M Bennet became engaged. This was a different twist to our usual Bennet family. They were delightful.
“A liar often smiles subtly while telling a lie; it’s an unconscious expression of his delight in getting away with a whopper.” –Pamela Meyer
Villains: Oh yes. That SBRB [scum-bag-rat-bastard] had to show his face in London and had the nerve to approach Darcy in public. He threatened to visit Darcy House and pay his respects to the Bennet ladies. He gloried in the fact he was their favorite. His nerve continued as he asked after Georgiana. I wanted to reach through my reading device and slap him silly. Darcy declared he would be turned away at the door and warned him that Colonel Richard was also staying at Darcy House. Justice was later served when Lydia and Elizabeth went missing. It didn’t take Darcy or Richard long to find Wickham and let him know their sentiments on his dealings with their ladies. Dash wasn’t too keen on him either.
We had a carryover visit from characters in Brown’s previous story ‘Confounding Caroline.’ I like Sir Matthew Broadhurst. Although this book could survive as a stand-alone, readers will need the previous story to see how Sir Matthew and Caroline met and became engaged. It was hilarious. It also sets up the premise for this story. Sir Matthew is always so calm and collected and yet, I would not want to cross him. He even offered to help Darcy with Wickham. Yep, I like this guy.
There were a lot of clues as to possible future happenings. It wasn’t exactly a cliffhanger. This episode ended with two happily betrothed ladies and now we are ready for the next person to find their happiness. The story ended at 94% on my device and followed with an excerpt from the next story in this series, ‘Loving Lydia’. It is currently a WIP [work-in-progress] posting on the author’s website and will be published at a later date.
I received an ARC [advanced reader copy] from the author with no expectations of a review. The views expressed are my own. Publication date: 1-10-19
Book 2 in the Marrying Elizabeth serie. Would advice you to read book 1, Confounding Caroline, first.
Mr Bennet had taken a tumble down the stairs at Darcy’s house with a little “help” from the pup Dash (adorable by the way). Not able to be moved in at least two weeks, Darcy came up with the brilliant idea of inviting Mrs Bennet and the rest of her daughters.
Luckily, the gentlemen that frequented Darcy’s town house, had not lost their tactical abilities and were not afraid to use them.
Be prepared though, to like some of the characters that you usually dislike. There were an exception to that and the twist to the Wickham/Lydia debacle was very creative.
This was first and foremost a love story and I loved the development of ODC’s relationship, it was beautifully written.
Heartily recommend this book!
