Praise for The City of Veils
★★★★★ “Once I started, I didn’t want to stop and I did cry a few times (just a few tear drops here and there).” – Goodreads Reviewer
★★★★★ “I related a lot to Brynna. We are both so stubborn and bullheaded, unwilling to admit fault, it made reading her story feel like I was reading about a piece of myself.” – Goodreads Reviewer
★★★★★ “I’ve always loved books with snarky female leads who can kick some ass.” – Goodreads Reviewer
★★★★★ “I highly suggest this book to anyone who read the Throne of Glass series. There are some similarities to the way the two women are in hiding and are thrust back into their royal titles. This book is full of great fight scenes, emotional blows, and great moments of laughter.” – Goodreads Reviewer

The City of Veils is the first in S. Usher Evans’ Princess Vigilante series. It’s a hoppin’ good story, about Brynna, a princess who fled an arranged marriage and became a masked vigilante protecting her city. She’s quite happy with things as they are, and she is highly displeased when she’s tracked down and compelled to return home. Her brothers’ untimely (and suspicious) deaths have made Brynna heir to the throne, and she’s got a lot to learn. She does come home, reluctantly, and even more reluctantly agrees to learn what she needs to know to rule, but doesn’t hang up her vigilante mask just yet.
This is a good, fun read. I love Brynna. She cares deeply for her people, she’d just prefer to work for their good from the shadows instead of from the throne. She has to grow up a fair bit, and sometimes I want to hug her and tell her it will be okay, and sometimes I just want to shake her. I think Felix, the captain of the guard, is my favorite. I think sometimes he wants to shake Brynna, too! Their interactions are wonderful. The story has fantasy, mystery, adventure, intrigue – a little bit of everything. I can’t wait for the second book to come out!
An interesting and exciting story with strong and intriguing characters, suspense, manipulation and corruption. Brynna was intense with strength and power emanating from her. Not the typical heroine in need of a hero to save her, at all! The plot development was rich, full of power struggling and intriguing situations. Greed, second gains and treason were the order of the day. Kept me attentive to details, with no idea what was going to happen and fearing for the stubborn and fearless princess. Liked Felix’s elusive and challenging character. Strong emotions, some amusing scenes, twists and surprises that kept me on suspense and waiting for more. Can’t wait for the second book.
This family-friendly follow up to The Runaway Princess takes about a day to read.
I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Brynna has fled her home to escape an unwanted marriage at a young age. Wanting what’s best for her city, she trains and becomes the Veil, protecting the people of the city from corruption and more. While people don’t know the woman behind the mask, they know of her good works, and they appreciate her helping out the city. But with the death of her father and then brother, Brynna needs to step up to become the queen the city needs, and it’s not a role she really wants.
We have some excellent characters, some we don’t entirely trust and some we want to see more of.
As Brynna’s character evolved, I grew to really like her. She’s strong, assertive, and funny and makes for a perfect leading lady. As far as her head guard Felix, I have mixed emotions about it. I think because he tends to leave out some truths from Brynna, I don’t entirely trust him even though it seems he honestly does care for her and wants to protect her. Sometimes he’s too overbearing and Brynna handles that well, especially after years of having her freedom.
Her desire to protect the city is commendable, and it speaks of her strength. That’s another reason I think Felix is too much sometimes because she’s proven that she can handle herself time and again, though it doesn’t always hurt to have backup.
Kat makes for a good character too, and besides a few secrets that she wasn’t ready to share, I think she’s going to be great for Brynna in the long haul. She knows what she’s talking about and makes for a great advisor.
While sometimes Brynna heeds the advice of Felix and Kat, she tends to be singularly focused, intent on taking down Beswick, the man who has everyone in the city in his pockets. People are afraid of him, they are living in poverty because of him, and the council members make deals with him to keep the city running. Brynna’s focus to take him down might just get in the way of her other responsibilities.
Evans is a fantastic writer, and she’s created a superb storyline in The City of Veils. Forcadel and the surrounding areas are creatively imagined, even down to the layout and shops, you get a vivid picture of the world that Brynna lives in. Her attitude shines through in her dealings, and I think it will help her in the long run. I cannot wait to get my hands on more of the Princess Vigilante series, very well done.
How can you resist a book described as Throne of Glass meets Batman?
Answer: You can’t.
With its immersive world, and unapologetically subversive heroine, CITY OF VEILS will knock you down and keep you coming back for more
After three years of hiding in the shadows and saving the city as The Veil, Brynna has to go back to the home she ran from. Usually getting arrested doesn’t end with a crown and a throne, but after the death of her father and brother, she will have to protect her people from the castle rather than on the streets. Afterall, a crown is just a different disguise.
Another vigilante to love, Brynna has to stop hitting the streets at night, and start hitting the books. Can she find who killed her father and brother, become queen, and save the city?
I absolutely LOVE this book! Brynna is quite relatable and is definitely something when it comes to mischief. I am in absolute love with her personality. She knows her place and doesn’t let people push her around. It is something I admire in her. She is also very witty and I couldn’t get enough. Once I started, I didn’t want to stop and I did cry a few times (just a few tear drops here and there).
The plot was well developed, in my opinion, and Evans really knows how to keep things interesting. This is the first book by Evans I have read, and I definitely will be reading more of her books from now on. I wish I had the next book and I cannot wait for it to be released! I highly recommend this read and I hope it gets the hype it deserves.
I am enjoying this entire series
Great characters! Action-packed read with a twist I did not see coming. I need the next book NOW.
All I can say is WOW!! S. Usher Evans has struck gold with this series!! It will be a series because the twist and cliffhanger at the end begs for the next book to continue the story!!
I was throughly captivated by this book! S. Usher Evans is a born storyteller! This story is so good because she is such a gifted writer! There are plots and subplots and certainly a twist at the end that blindsided me for I never saw it coming!
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all who love a great story but be forewarned that you will find it very hard to put down until you reach the final page but then you want the next book now to continue the story. It is one exciting, adventure that you’re about to take part in. So be prepared to read well into the night!
I can’t wait for the next book and you won’t either. S. Usher Evans has hit a home run with this story as you’ll discover when you start reading it. Kudos to S.Usher Evans for a job well done!!
S. Usher Evans’ The City of Veils (Princess Vigilante Book 1) is totally and wonderfully creative and fun. I love the lead here, Brynna, vigilante by night and queen by day. I also love the plot of this book (read the publisher’s blurb for that) and how well this book was written. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
OMG I just love Brynna! A strong kick ass vigilante turned queen, she is a fantastic female lead character! Well written this fast paced story is addictive and the world the author has built is creative and well thought out and you can picture it all vividly! Great storyline, great characters, i can’t wait to read the next book!
Good book. The storyline is interesting and the characters are well written.
ONE ELECTRIFYING ADVENTURE!!!
Wow! Talk about kickin’ it up a bit. This is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, nailbiting, pulse racing, heart pounding, page turning bombshell that’s as riveting as it is captivating. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few unexpected surprises as well as unpredictable circumstances make for thrilling experience. The drama, nerve racking, spine tingling, mystery, danger and suspense increases steadily as the tension spirals while the plot thickens. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. With such graphically detailed descriptions it’s easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another perfectly. Evans did a remarkable job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Evans, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
