Combining southern warmth with unabashed emotion and side-splitting hilarity, Fannie Flagg takes readers back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri, where the most unlikely and surprising experiences of a high-spirited octogenarian inspire a town to ponder the age-old question: Why are we here?Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next … the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet. Meanwhile, back home, Elner’s nervous, high-strung niece Norma faints and winds up in bed with a cold rag on her head; Elner’s neighbor Verbena rushes immediately to the Bible; her truck driver friend, Luther Griggs, runs his eighteen-wheeler into a ditch–and the entire town is thrown for a loop and left wondering, “What is life all about, anyway?” Except for Tot Whooten, who owns Tot’s Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop. Her main concern is that the end of the world might come before she can collect her social security.
In this comedy-mystery, those near and dear to Elner discover something wonderful: Heaven is actually right here, right now, with people you love, neighbors you help, friendships you keep. Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven is proof once more that Fannie Flagg “was put on this earth to write” (Southern Living), spinning tales as sweet and refreshing as iced tea on a summer day, with a little extra kick thrown in.

This book was typical Fanny flag. She treated and witty way I’m very interesting subject. With her mystical way of explaining what heaven is like she tackled a a hard subject in a way that could bring comfort to the soul.
A gentle, funny story which gets a bit far fetched halfway through but the theme that each person helps others in unknown ways and every life matters is reassuring. Also books about old people are rare.
great book
I only got about halfway through before I just gave up. Just not my kind of reading material.
Loved this book. I feel it inspires people to take care of one another, and shows what can happen when you do.
What can I say—I just love Fannie Flagg. She is one of the greatest authors on the earth as far as I am concerned. She can allow you to feel so many things—so much love—her characters are so real. I feel I could meet them at any time, any where. Thank you Fannie and may God bless you and yours, today and always
Maybe what we think about dying is all wrong. Maybe heaven is really something different. If things things are true we are in for a very good time. Even better then now. As always Fannie Flagg entertains with great character development. I hate to see the story end. I would love for her to write a series.
Loved it, wonderful ending.
Didn’t enjoy it.
Fanny Flagg is always a fun read. She is my favorite auther.
I don’t like the way they portrayed heaven GOD and ask that, if it is a Christian book and advertised as one it should be one
Very entertaining.
I read this book many years ago. Is there anything Fannie Flagg has written that is not a joy to read? I think I actually read everything she has written.
I love it! Fannie is a favorite for sure!
will make you think about life and how you might have
lived it. Slow starter but will hold you to the end
It was so good I didn’t want to stop reading!
I loved the characters in this book. Fannie Flagg is one of my favorite authors. The only reason I didn’t give this five stars is because of Raymond and his wife, better known as God. The both of them. It just didn’t sit well with me, nor did it seem to flow well in the story which otherwise was plausible. Still it was a great book and I loved …
Fanny Flagg creates down home, charming characters
Typical good story from Fannie !!
Great book! Funny, comforting, and inspiring.
