“This is the thinking reader’s romantic suspense, and it’s dynamite.” – USA TODAY
The man of her fantasies is finally hers. Sort of…Two things haunt forensic anthropologist Hazel MacLeod: the bones of victims of genocide she examines for her work, and former SEAL Sean Logan’s rejection. But within days of moving to her cousin’s estate to take a much needed break, she finds herself faced with … estate to take a much needed break, she finds herself faced with both.
First, she’s called in to examine a mass grave in Virginia, then, her politician cousin receives a threatening letter and insists Hazel needs around the clock protection–from none other than Sean Logan. To make matters worse, because the threat to her is classified, Hazel and Sean must pretend to be lovers to hide that he’s her bodyguard.
Sean has spent years trying to avoid his boss’s sexy cousin, but now he’s guarding her twenty-four seven and even bringing her as his date to a romantic destination wedding. As the heat between them intensifies, Sean can’t lose sight of the danger that brought them together. But when bullets start flying, new questions arise. Are the senator’s political rivals really behind the threat, or is someone trying to silence Hazel from speaking for the dead?

I haven’t ever been disappointed by books from Rachel Grant
Not totally needed but would have helped if I had read the previous books. Still, a good book.
Really wanted to like the book. Turned off by all the virtue signalling and talk of white supremacists, not wanting to go into a confederate museum and other political stuff. Just not what I want in my books. Gave up.
Author was more interested in expressing political views and telling a good story.
I enjoyed the story, the characters were well developed, and the plot was interesting. However, the language in the sex scenes was too raunchy and didn’t match with the personality of the characters or the tone of the rest of the book. I think the same level of passion could have easily been portrayed with language that was much tamer.
part of the series. engaging
Another well written well crafted addition to the evidence series that is a stand alone but really some knowledge of the prior characters’ histories (particularly Alec and isabel) would make the reading easier. I found this story concentrated less on the science and suspense part of the story vs the relationship aspect. The author does a fine job of handling racism, which really made the book timely considering this last months happenings. Overall I really enjoyed it.
A mass grave on domestic soil sets up this latest story in the Evidence series. Fans of the series will also recognize forensic anthropologist Hazel MacLeod, who is Alec Ravissant cousin and Ivy’s sister.
Along with being set in the US it also deals with many issues that are prevalent right now. Racism, racial profiling and mental health.
More character centered than fast paced action thriller, intrigue and international conspiracies this time around. But the characters were ones we loved from past books along with the sweet, yet conflicted romance of Hazel and Sean Logan, an operative with Raptor who is assigned as Hazel’s bodyguard.
As much a dislike admitting it, I am not a fan of this book. I could not get into this one. I really enjoy this series, but I could not connect with this book. I felt like the story was always in the background stage and nothing was happening.
I received a readers copy through Netgallery of Silent Evidence . This is my Opinion .
This story is well written and very intriguing , It takes off from the beginning and kepts you immersed in the intense storyline . The characters are fantastic . Hazel MacLeod is a forensic anthropologist . She’s dealing with PTSD from issues from her past assignments . Hazel is called in by her cousin’s wife to assist in a skeletal mass grave that was discovered . Little do they know the danger they just fell in . Sean Logan is asked to guard Hazel when threats are made towards the Senator’s family . They don’t know by whom or exactly why . The job of guarding Hazel is awkward due to Sean turning down her advances awhile back only because he doesn’t want to jeopardize his job . When all is said and danger comes their attraction and love maybe worth it . The action a suspense is very intense . The story is well written . Ms . Grant really puts the twists and turns into this story . I was captivated from the start to finish . I really enjoyed reading this Fantastic Suspense .
Whilst you can read the series as stand-alones, I would suggest reading them in order as some books do have an impact on this storyline, namely Incriminating Evidence & Poison Evidence.
Hazel is struggling with a major case of PTSD, whether she wants to admit to it or not. Things went very wrong on her last assignment in Croatia and mental health has taken a sever knock. She feels comfortable staying with Alec & Isabel, but when Isabel has a time sensitive assignment at a drained reservoir, Hazel finds herself entangled in a n all new mystery. Oh and now she has to deal with seeing Sean Logan way more often than is good for her self-esteem. She made a fool of herself over him and has no wish to have it rubbed into her face!
Sean has dreamt of a certain redheaded Anthropologist for a loooong time. But he when he rejected her he didn’t do it to hurt her, he just wanted to keep himself safe from Alec’s wrath! But when threats are made that could be targeted at either Isabel or Hazel, Sean makes it his personal mission to keep Hazel out of the line of fire.
Add in a wedding with Sean as best man and Hazel finds herself his plus one. She really doesn’t want to lie to anyone but no-one is really blinking an eye. What do they know that she doesn’t?
Sean kind of made me dizzy with his want-her-want-her-not swings! Hazel is just as bad! Other than that the storyline was well thought out and everyone has role in the book, no one just turns up to fill a page or too.
All the genocide issues are dealt with respectfully and with a great attention to detail. I did feel so sorry for Hazel when she realised that Matthew – aka Dmitri and her sister had been hiding some major secrets from her.
I feel this may have worked better as a novella as the romance kind of weighed down the suspense but otherwise well worth a read!
Silent Evidence by Rachel Grant is the eighth book in the ‘Evidence’ series. I have read the previous books in this series and it was great to get to know two more characters. Hazel MacLeod is a forensic anthropologist and is making an assessment of a mass grave at the request of her cousin’s wife, Isabel. There are security problems on the site and due to previous threats, Hazel is appointed a bodyguard, Sean Logan. Even though this book is part of a series, you can read it as a stand-alone book. There were some repetitive explanations and references to events from the previous books, but I suppose the author thought it necessary if a reader was not familiar with the series. This book seemed to focus more on lust and sex than actual suspense and intrigue. The theme of mind control, racial prejudice, and political corruption are interwoven very well.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Hazel is a forensic anthropologist and just got back from Croatia, looking at bones of genocide. She is going a a psychotherapist after examining the bones of children. She’s staying with her cousin ( a Senator )when he gets threatening mail. He can’t tell them everything but that the threat could be against his wife or her. Sean is a former SEAL and now works for a security company. He and Hazel have known each other for years so he’s picked to play her boyfriend but he’s really her bodyguard. Hazel has been attracted to Sean for years but he’s always turned her down. As they try to figure out who is threatening them, Sean realizes what an idiot he’s been.
I loved this story, it’s got action, steamy romance, and suspense. Great story to take your mind off every day aggravations.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for NetGalley *
As a forensic anthropologist, Hazel MacLeod is still recovering from examining bones found in a mass grave in Croatia. Although she needs more time, she can’t say no to her good friend, Dr. Isabel Dawson, when asked to examine bones found in a recently drained reservoir. Now due to a classified threat to her cousin, Senator Ravissant, his wife Isabel and to herself, she is reunited with Sean Logan, former Navy SEAL. She has not seen Sean since an embarrassing incident in Grand Cayman and now he will be her bodyguard until the threat is neutralized. Since the threat contains classified details, Sean and Hazel must pretend to be lovers so that he is able to give her the 24/7 protection she needs. They do not know if the threat is due to her cousin’s, political agenda or whether someone is trying to keep Hazel from discovering the identities of the victims in the reservoir. As danger continues to stalk them, can Sean keep her alive? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Hazel and Sean need to ‘pretend’ to be boyfriend/girlfriend to keep Hazel’s protection a secret. They are very convincing! Then there are the bones that Hazel is investigating. When the bullets start to fly, they need to figure out if they are actually after Hazel, or does her politician cousin have something going on? I voluntarily reviewed a free ARC of this book.
Book 8 in the Evidence Series by Ms. Grant. Dr. Hazel McLeod is a very skilled forensic anthropologist, and takes her job very seriously. She has returned from Croatia to stay with her cousin and his wife Isabel. To regroup but what she finds when Isabel asks for help is something so much more. Her day can’t get any worse until she sees the man who dismisses her. Sean Logan.
Sean Logan doesn’t know why Alec wants him to go and pick his wife up. But when he sees the women who has been part of his nightly dreams he feels blindsided. What happens next he’s so unprepared for. But the danger is real. He will stop at nothing to protect Hazel and his friends.
This book shocked me to the end in a good way. Twist and turns. The banter between friends, and the solidarity of friends. I love how all the characters in the past books are brought back in this book.
But don’t worry if you haven’t read them. I do suggest to read them as they all are as
It’s an amazing series.
There is fun, frolic, suspense, politics, racism, forensics and oh, by the way, a fantastic story
Silent Evidence is the 8th book in the Evidence series but don’t let that stop you from reading it if you haven’t read the other books. Part way into the beginning of this book, I realized I must have missed the previous book in the series, because I didn’t remember some of the names of the characters or the situations they had faced. I must admit, I thought for a heartbeat would I be missing some of the back story because of that, but then I figured not everyone will have read all of the series, so no going back, just continue reading. I am so glad I did. Rachel laid out the characters so well, that not having read the previous book, which was about Hazel’s sister Ivy, I didn’t feel as if I was missing out. In fact, it allowed me to focus on Hazel and Sean’s story exclusively and what a fascinating story it was.
I loved learning about how forensic anthropologist Hazel MacLeod worked, what it was she was able to learn about the bones she was brought in to examine in a mass grave near the home she is staying in, and how she was able to pretend to be in a relationship with her bodyguard Sean, a man she had in the past felt something for. In fact, her feelings towards Sean, and his feelings, that he tries to deny towards Hazel, put a very interesting dynamic into play in this book.
There is fun, frolic (think scavenger hunt with a bit of a twist since most of the couples hunting are brilliant strategists) and romance since there is a wedding that Sean is the Best Man for. There is also suspense, politics and racism, but as always, Rachel lays it all out in an amazingly readable and exciting book. I had a hard time putting this book down and not all of it was a feel good storyline, in fact the trauma some of the characters had to go through, being former military, or having been held hostage and tortured, adds just the right balance to make this a true romantic suspense story, heavier in the suspense, just the way I like them.
I always like to read a series in order, but based on my experience with this book, you don’t have to, to enjoy and get lost in the story. Rachel Grant is an automatic read author for me and after you read this book, I think she will be the same for you. Enjoy, I know I did.
