Finally, a book filled with strong women doing the right things without a boyfriend or mentor. Women taking personal stands and fighting the good fight. Dom Walker had a hard childhood, raised her brother Beecher and is now a member of the FBI. She is back on a case after time off as the last case involved pedophiles and children and it hit everyone hard. Dom is still awaiting a review of her work in it. Her boss, Fontaine, gives her an easy assignment. Find out if a very rich couple’s daughter is missing and perhaps partying or kidnapped. Dom is told to step lightly.
Lea Peak is also FBI and younger and also filled with working for righteousness and helps Dom find information as needed.
You then meet Mila a quiet, worker at The Museum of Natural History and knows the missing girl slightly. And Mila has her own causes and finding Hettie Van Buren becomes one of them.
And in Honduras, there is a young woman, Maria, willing to risk her life to let the world know about an atrocity. You now have six degrees of separation that will tie up at the end in a wonderful yet poignant way.
Dom Walker breathes life into this book. You pick up techniques and profiling information and the politics involved in certain cases.
Dom lets you see the crime scenes through her eyes and you assess the situations with her. Dom looks into the parents and Hettie. Hettie has a young man, Micah, smart and studious but poor and from Honduras. The family is not happy. Dom learns as much as she can and determines the girl has been kidnapped. The way Dom surveys the missing girl’s place lets you figure out if Hettie left on own.
The rich really do live different and you have you have an inside view of the lifestyle and homes and the power.
Excellent plot, terrific characters and red herring that takes you down the wrong path but seems right. Dom talks to herself, hears her father telling her to do a good job and she recites the FBI letters….Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity……and that is what these women all fight for…truth.
5 plus stars…..finally a series I will read and really enjoy with strong women!!
FBI female special agent returning from an involuntary leave of absence is put on a supposedly no brainer missing person’s case that turns into a page turning thriller. This is book one of a series and we get her backstory very nicely interwoven with an increasingly complicated missing person case. The plot was original with a believable current day subject which kept me completely involved. Got to know the characters that will probably always appear in her next books. They are all interesting and have their own strengths to contribute to the success of our special agent.
My first by H.N. Wake and it was a treat. FBI Agent Dom’s story is already a mystery with this first book. So many good characters to ‘flesh’ out as the series continues. I enjoyed the way they all intertwined in this story and the way it was pulled together at the end with promises of more good stories to come. I’ll be keeping this author on my TBR list. Thank you.
This author has a gift of describing human emotions even if this writer has never experienced them personally. Also, has the incredible gift of writing-in poetry, no less- imaginary life dramas, traumas & feelings of one of the characters. A fascinating introduction to the first book in the series.
Many well connected characters kept the plot twists and turns exciting. Great read!
I ordered the next in the series…
Great book!!! Looking for the next one!!!
Could have been better.
kept my interest
I’ve read a number of FBI novels over the last six years but this is by far the best. This is my first by Wake. He’s included a number of different ideas on how to tell a story. One, Agent Dom has her dead FBI father always talking to her; encouraging her in different ways, especially in every day activities, and always in particularly possible dangerous events in her investigations.
You will be missing out on a great story if you don’t read this book!
4.5 Stars
SOUND OF A FURIOUS SKY introduces FBI Special Agent Domini Walker. Domini has been on an enforced leave of absence for the past 3 months. When she returns, her supervisor has a job for her.
The daughter of very wealthy parents, Hettie Van Buren, has been reported as missing. Most involved expect that she stole away with her boyfriend and will be back in a few days. Even her father doesn’t seem to be too concerned.
Until ….. Domini finds the boyfriend’s body shot to death.
Domini has determined that whoever killed the boyfriend also kidnapped Hettie. But why? There’s been no ransom note, but Domini finds that the two of them made a secret trip to Honduras.
Things aren’t always what they seem and Domini is going to have to dig deep to get through the lies and secrets. Will she be in time to find Hettie … or is she already too late?
I love getting in on the ground floor of a new series. It’s always a pleasure to meet new exciting characters that come to life under the author’s pen. Domini Walker is a terrific character. She’s multi-layered with some issues past and present. She’s dedicated to her job.
I was tantalized by Domini’s childhood, along with her brother, and how she became the person she is. I really look forward to seeing more of her, and watching her grow.
Many thanks to the author for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
