Oh wow, I started with book three and liked it so much I had to go.back and listen to the previous books. So glad I did because I enjoyed this book just as much and I can safely say listening to the story out of order doesn’t effect the enjoyment. You just have a clue as to what is going to happen but with so many twists In the plot that isn’t always certain. I can so easily see this being made into a big budget film, it is that good. The story is told by a number of characters, of which there are many but with so many twists in the plot it needs to be done this way and it keeps the story exciting and entertaining. The sci-fi body swooping is interesting (and scary) but it is the diabolical plans the baddies have to wipe out America that really grab you and keep you listening until the end. I just hope no terrorist get any ideas from this author. It is hard to write this review because so much happens and I don’t want to give away any spoilers but I still want to get across the message that it is well worth a listen.
With the Leopard dead, his brother the cub comes out of hiding to act out his brothers plan and take revenge on the people who killed him. But first he needs to take out the team who stopped him and he does that by kidnapping a young boy. Sam is dead but lives on In the computer world that is until his son goes missing then he and his friends pull out all the stops to get him back and part of that plan means finding Sam a body he can use. The kidnapping is the first of many attacks planned and with many lives threatened the Cub must be stopped because he has discovery a weakness that is ripe for attack.
I liked the narrator and think.he adds to the drama with just the sound of his voice.
The futuristic technological aspects of the book are not something which would generally attract my interest. But, I decided to take a chance.
The story line is well developed and flows beautifully. The characters have a great deal of depth and relatability. The author does an excellent job of creating relationships between the characters. The research into the technological features and into police/security procedure was obviously detailed and carefully integrated into the story.
The book was a pleasant surprise. The author does an amazing job of drawing you into the relationships as well as the suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next installment of this series.
If you enjoy reading about fighting potential terrorist threats, and futuristic technology, this book is a must!
‘”I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.”
This book is a continuation of the Not so Dead series. It’s fast paced, lots of action. I read the third book first, then the first and lastly this book. It’s an intriguing story. I definitely recommend this series. Although you can read them in any order, it’s definitely best to read them starting with the first.
There’s a lot going on and it’s mind boggling. Not for young readers.
I listened to the audio version and the narrator did a great job.
In Not So Gone, Charles Levin’s second novel in the Sam Sunborn series, we find our protagonist, Sam Sunborn, living digitally after he and his Digital 3000 partner, Frank Einstein, were murdered by a terrorist group led by The Leopard. This terrorist group has lofty plans, and the world itself is in jeopardy. The powers that be are onto this group’s nefarious plans, but they are always a few steps behind.
Digital 3000 digitized personalities, memories and emotions to the cloud, which was fortunate for Sam and Frank. They are “living” inside the web, which is almost like a super power, but is also restrictive — no physical pleasures or senses/sensations. They can Skype with their loved ones and watch over them, but there is always that barrier. They also have insider information about the terrorists, which can be helpful, but only to a certain point.
When Sam’s son Evan is kidnapped by The Cub, the younger brother of The Leopard, he is desperate to find a physical body to download into. Inhabiting the cloud gives him instantaneous access to information, but not the ability to take real world action. Sam and his compatriots find a man on the edge of death, a crazed murderer named Valiente jailed in Mexico, who seems the perfect candidate for their plan. They decide to liberate Valiente and download Sam into his brain. As you can imagine, personalities and memories clash while Sam tries to adapt to his “new” body and his reincarnation as a living, breathing human.
In my opinion, there were too many characters to keep up with or to develop fully, and the plot held too many sub-plots to do justice to any one of them. But overall a few strong threads kept me interested, and the charge toward the resolution of all the different story lines was exciting.
I was given the Audible version of this book in exchange for an honest review. The narrator, Daniel Greenberg, does a great job with novel, smoothing some rather awkward wording and unrealistic conversation so it flows better than it might on the page.
Sam Sanborn is living in a cloud, not the white puffy kind but a virtual kind. When a terrorist kidnaps his son, he has his friends upload his virtual self into a borrowed body. Talk about multiple personalities. He teams up with others to stop this terrorist who is always one step ahead of them. This is one rollercoaster of a story never knowing what will happen. It will definitely keep your attention. I received a complimentary audio and this review is voluntary.
I’m impressed! A fast paced thriller with lots of action. There is some violence but it was a necessary part of the storyline. I could definitely see the technology described as something that could easily come into play in the future.
Daniel Greenberg’s narration was spot on! The perfect voice for this story.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Sam Sunborn needs a body so he can find his son. Death cannot stop this father from saving not only his son but the whole world. An extremely well written novel by an imaginative author, Charles Levin.
