‘Wow… Brilliant! This book had everything… I read it in super-fast time because I couldn’t put it down. An excellent read.’ Bonnie’s Book Talk, 5 starsAs she opened her eyes and took in her surroundings, a feeling of terror ran through her weakened body. She knew exactly where she was. And she knew exactly what was about to happen to her… Ella Tate stumbles into Black Rock Falls, her exhausted and bloodied body is a terrifying sight, but not as frightening as the story she has to tell. Ambushed on their way into town when they stopped to help a man by the side of the road, Ella and her friend Sky ran when he pulled a knife on them. But only one of them got away.
As Detective Jenna Alton investigates the case, she looks into the history of missing persons in the town, and uncovers more cases – all young people. All stopped on the same stretch of road into town. All vanished without a trace.
When a distinctive pink sweater belonging to Sky turns up in Black Rock Falls, Jenna follows the trail to a derelict building on the outskirts of town. But she isn’t prepared for what lies behind those doors. Can she stop the killer before more lives are lost?
If you like Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Abbott you’ll love this nail-biting thriller from D.K. Hood.
Each Kane and Alton book can be read as part of the series or as a standalone

Sherriff Alton and deputy Kane have incredible chemistry! I love reading about them and cant wait for the next one to be released!
This is another scary ride in Montana as wind, ice, and the axeman test the police team.
Jenna and Kane are both recovering from their last case and are relying on the rest of their team when a girl claims she was attacked.
The beginning pulls you in as Skye and Ella are attacked in a dark, cold, snowy night while driving on an isolated stretch of road. It reads like the scary stories told at camps about young girls disappearing.
Ella is trying to find Skye with the help of Doug, Skye’s brother. The use of facebook and messaging bring home the need for thinking before displaying your trips and travel…..the axeman reads and plans.
Jenna and Kane realize more missing people traveled the roads nearby. Rowely, another deputy, takes on tracking down clues and talking to witnesses. There is an industrial park that needs to be checked out as more victims are picked up and taken away to be killed.
The cold and dark create an uneasy atmosphere. And paranoia seems to kick in as the police check out Ella as perhaps Skye’s killer, or that doctor that will come to your home seems a bit off and then Jenna and Kane are both hiding from their pasts and are on edge.
This is part of a series and can be read as a stand alone, but I have read the series which emphasizes the working relationship Jenna has with her co-workers .
Evil is real and just scary as is the axeman. Police procedural, solid plot, and great characters. 4.5
This book is the last of a series and I enjoyed #1 through 5! Loved the characters and felt each book was a page turner. I’d definitely recommend this series.
Where Angels Fear by D.K. Hood
Detectives Kanae and Alton #5
Coming into this series on book five made me wish I had read the other four books before I started. I could easily follow the murder mystery portion of the book but really felt I would have enjoyed the story more if I had met and gotten to know the many characters throughout the previous books. I have a feeling Jenna Alton and David Kane’s backstories would add depth to their characters as would the feeling that they may have had the beginning of a romance in previous books. I found Shane Wolfe intriguing but in this book he was more of a supporting character. Jake Rowley and some of the other characters mentioned no doubt flesh out the stories – especially if you have read the first books in the series. So…will take that into account when I rate it.
The actual murderer was a creep and a half and the people assisting him hard to understand. The idea was not new but it was riveting to read the story as it unrolled. I had a feeling about one of the baddies early on…just as I was supposed to…but the mastermind took a bit longer to be revealed.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Maybe…especially if I can get my hands on earlier books
Do I recommend it? If you can find and read the books in order
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Only in Black Rock Falls will you find a Sheriff who is an ex-DEA Agent in witness protection with a new name and a new face, a Deputy who was a sniper and member of the Special Forces Investigation Command and another who is also the ME.
Called to investigate when a young woman appears out of nowhere … bloodied and half-frozen, she tells a story that has the Sheriff and her Deputies reeling. She tells them that she and her friend stopped along the highway to help a disabled driver when the man wielded what looked like an ax. Her friend did not get away … and now she’s missing.
Detective Jenna Alton does a little research and finds there have been many cases of missing persons … all young people …. all stopped at the same place on the highway … all who have never been seen since.
The detectives’ investigation will lead them to a horrific discovery.
WHERE ANGELS FEAR can be read as part of the series or easily as a standalone. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Not only is it a fascinating story on how the three main characters came together, but their story is woven through an action-packed page-turner. I especially enjoy how the characters relate to each other … with caring, respect, humor and sometimes a little sarcasm … but it’s the way they go about solving crime in their little town that sets them apart.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
It’s beginning to look like no one is safe in Black Rock Falls. The town seems to attract serial killers. Where Angels Fear by D.K. Hood if the fifth book in her Detectives Kane and Alton series. People are disappearing in the middle of the night along a lonely stretch of road near the town. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane have few clues to go on to solve the mystery of these disappearances. The suspense in this book is bone-chilling. This is another winner for Author D.K. Hood.
4 and 1 / 2 stars
Ella Tate manages to escape a murderer, but her friend Sky was captured. Is she alive? Her car and belongings have disappeared. The responding police cannot find any evidence of the abduction in the snowstorm that has blanked the small Montana town.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner Deputy David Kane have a new mystery on their hands. Jenna’s past comes back with a vengeance and Kane is still recovering from the gunshot wound to his leg.
The team which consists of several loyal deputies and support staff begin to investigate the case. Ella recalls a little more about the abductor. Jenna has a shocking realization that several persons have gone missing in the area. They all disappeared in the same place, or nearly so, that Ella’s friend went missing. How did no one ever notice? Through a patient and exhaustive investigation, Jenna, Kane and the team track the killer to an old abandoned building.
This is a fast moving thrill ride of a book. This book is extremely well written and plotted, as are all of Ms. Hood’s novels. I really like Jenna and Kane, and the rest of the team as well. They are smart, savvy and dedicated detectives. They make a great team and get along very well. Their personalities complement one another well. I enjoy Ms. Hood’s novels and look very much forward to reading the next in this series.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
