NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “It takes a rare individual not only to see that history can live, but also to make it live for others. James Thom has that gift.”—The Indianapolis NewsMary Ingles was twenty-three, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held … massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit.
With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen. Her story lives on—extraordinary testimony to the indomitable strength of one pioneer woman who risked her life to return to her own people.

As I stood gazing at the New River Gorge a few years ago, I could see the ghostly form of Mary Ingles, making her way through that rugged valley of the 1750’s. Follow The River is Mary’s amazing story. Written with heart and accuracy, the author chronicles her every step as this determined frontier woman makes her way home to the man she loves. …
I couldn’t put down, fascinating! Based on an actual person.
True story!
This story stays with you for a long, long time after closing the last page.
And…it’s based on a true story!
I loved it. She was a Warrior, a survivor….
I read this book years ago and it has stuck with me as a very interesting and riveting book. It’s based on a true story. I seldom reread a book and I would reread that one.
I loved this book!! It drew me in right from the start and I couldn’t put it down, though at times it was a harrowing read. I for one, know, I wouldn’t have survived what this woman went through, and certainly never lived to tell about it. A moving story with a compelling plot and interesting characters, this is definitely worth the read.
This is always in my top favorites when someone asks for a recommendation. This is historical fiction, so based on a true story, and amazing story of courage, endurance, fortitude, inventiveness, and just plain toughness of a woman who loved her husband and followed him to the edge of civilization and the amazing story of what happened to her …
This book was based on a true story. It has engaging characters and is totally engrossing. It leaves you doubting your own stamina and very respectful of the resourcefulness and determination of the women.
The true story of Mary Ingles, very pregnant, kidnapped by Indians after they massacred the settlement in 1755, and how she fought and found her way back home 1000 miles in the untamed wilderness of Virginia. Very well written. I’m reading it again right now…
I really enjoyed reading this book although it was close to 20 years ago. Anything written by James Alexander Thom is going to be GREAT.
This is my all time favorite book. It shows you how much a person can endure.
Historical account, one of my favorite books.
Hard to read through the savagery and hardships but a very inspiring true story. It’s hard to imagine Mary Ingles journey.
This is a well-written page-turner by James A. Thom, an account of a true event, a story of such fortitude and courage it will leave you gasping! In 1750s America, young and adventurous families trekked over the Appalachian mountains to settle on the frontier. Mary Draper met Will Ingles there and they married and started their own family. Mary …
