A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick
“A deeply soulful novel that comprehends love and cruelty, and separates the big people from the small of heart, without ever losing sympathy for those unfortunates who don’t know how to live properly.” —Zadie Smith
One of the most important and enduring books of the twentieth century, Their Eyes Were Watching God brings to life a Southern love story with … Watching God brings to life a Southern love story with the wit and pathos found only in the writing of Zora Neale Hurston. One of my favorite books!
A classic. Not an easy read, but a necessary one.
If you love the art of words, Hurston is one of the finest artists to ever paint the world in black and white. I used to teach this book every year, and after 30 years, I was still discovering new meaning in Hurston’s nuances.
Reminds a woman to never settle for less than her worth in any area!
Beautiful prose, wonderfully heartbreaking story, strong main character. I enjoyed every page of this book
Fantastic writer.
Amazing imagery. Great story that has stood the test of time.

Janie’s …
