Maneuvering through terrifying trials and torrid tribulations, noting the shocking twists and wicked turns, testing our characters in ways they could have never envisioned. The realism and authenticity of the characters as their on point personalities blend and connect along with the graphically detailed scenes, paint an epic backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Ana, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
I loved the gypsy aspects of this story. It really set me into an unfamiliar world. And I was never lost. It because as a paranormal murder mystery. Our heroine Leona seems to have no end of trouble in her life, especially when a fellow teacher, with whom she had–let’s just say–disagreements, turns up dead in a most undignified manner in the men’s room. Just what was Leona doing in there anyway? This story will take you through many emotional twists and turns as the mystery is solved, but it’s more than that–it’s a romance too!
When Leona, a teacher at a school primarily for the underprivileged, decides she has been fighting off advances from another teacher for long enough, she finally lets her tongue loosen up and tells that jerk what she thinks he deserves. Satisfied, she goes about her business only to soon find that the jerk has been murdered in the very way she suggested.
The murder attracts the attention of Nathaniel, the leader of the local order of monks, but not quite as you would imagine monks to be. Together Nathaniel and Leona must figure out who has her in their sights, but can they ward off the growing attraction between them as they do so?
This book has everything you could want in a romance – an original storyline, a conclusive ending, twists, turns, and oh so much steam! If you like romance you will love this whole series!
The tension, sexual and otherwise is off the charts in this epic adventure of good v evil. Really enjoyed the plot line. There is plenty to keep you guessing as to the true murderers identity, but the best part of it all is the burning passion of the two main characters; Nathanial, who has to keep his hands to himself and his mind free from all corruption, and Leona, a temptress beyond comparrison.
Description and character development are excellent too. Was swept away with the final few scenes. Left me gasping! Can’t wait for more in this series.
I love the Roma premise and school setting, both of which offer so many chances for prejudice and drama. I loved Leona’s attitude as a poor Roma girl trying to do good with her position as teacher in a second-chance school. While the murder mystery itself was interesting, it felt a bit tacked on in the end, and I didn’t experience much anticipation with the resolution. I did enjoy the writing and the touch of Romani language. Some typos weren’t too distracting, but I enjoyed the mythology, tales, and paranormal details.
Hot, hot, hot!
Steamy passion and desire by these creatures of magic.
Gripping story, had to read it in one sitting, couldn’t put it down.
Ana Calin is a great author of lusty, yet loving romance.
Highly recommend, will be getting the next, great series.
Book Four in the A Superpowers Romance series once I started this book I was not putting it down until I had finished it, a well-written story that I enjoyed reading.
This was the first book by this author that I ever read and I loved her style. The beats of this story are like being inside of the production of a Netflix, full of twists and turns and surprises that you didn’t see coming. The characters are well-developed and I love their sense of completion. They all feel like real people that you have met and you miss them when you are done with the story. This story has a really unique and creative voice within the genre and I really liked the view into the inner life of the characters. This is a great read and it will make you want to read all of her books!
The Devil’s Elixir; the 3rd installment of the Dark Lord’s series definitely does not disappoint! Ana Calin has quickly moved up the ranks to one of my top 5 authors I will automatically 1-click regardless. Her writing style is so captivating and her imagination is unbelievable. (Talk about a girl crush)
While reading The Devil’s Elixir – Dark Lords #3, I was struck by how much of this book felt like it had to have been planned out from way back in the beginning of the series. If you have not read the first 2 books I strongly recommend starting with Dark Protector/The Executioner Part One #1 and Dark Secrets #2. Kudos to her editing team for being able to keep up with her. I have to say this book ends on a cliffhanger, as did the first 2 books in the series. As a reader, I am NOT a fan of cliffhangers; however, I find myself not minding it so much in Ana’s books because I KNOW she’s going to deliver in OUTSTANDING fashion. Yes, I’m that confident.
There are A LOT of twist and turns in this book. Information overload was sometimes unavoidable but not uncomfortable. I was rooting for Leona to get her own book. Boy does she; and The Viscount? Drool worthy!
We know from the series Leona is a Gypsy. At the end of Dark Secrets she was shipped off to the Monastery, she knew too much and had to be protected by The Order. She’s beautiful and very enticing/alluring to the opposite sex. This is her burden to bear. She has been abstinent for 3 years now – another burden since she is unashamedly sexual in the previous books – and has received training to keep within the “good graces” and under the protection of The Order. Nathaniel has kept his distance but still kept an eye on her. He knows her potential as a Gypsy and a spell caster, even when she doesn’t. When trouble has found her, he is there to help. He’s the only one strong enough to keep her safe. Their story unfolds so fluidly it’s beautiful. I felt myself rooting for them throughout the book. I fear to go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil this book for you. All I can say is… I NEED MORE! I think you will too.
This is very fast paced so settle in and get comfortable. You’re not going to want to turn away until the very last page. And then you’ll possibly curse like I did to know that you were going to have to wait for the next book to come out. WoWZAme! Dear Ana, Please Hurry… I’m hanging by a thread. Like I’ve said in my other reviews… I’M PATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE TO GET TO ME.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
This is a story that is much a mystery as is it interesting. It has characters from the other books that adds to the story. It has twists and turns throughout the story. It is is well written and certainly worth reading.
Leone Its been three years since her friend Alice’s wedding to Damien in that time she went three things she learned to control her power from Nathaniel and Achangel but now her power is rising and becoming dangerous. This would have never happened if it wasn’t for that cabin in the woods when everyone’s life changed she had a boyfriend she had gone from being a Gypse child on the streets to going to college with her best friend Alice now its all changed her heritage is all tied up in her new power a power that can tempt the purest of souls Nathaniel. A curse that seduces and condems how can she and Nathaniel be together when he is everything she needs to stay sane and she endangers his very being.
Nathaniel has lived a long and twisted existence he’s genetically enhanced and Archangel and he controls some very dangerous beings but his most dangerous and tempting is Leone she doesn’t know everything about herself and he needs to stop her or save her.
Well written twisted exotic and exotic temptation of a book. I was allowed to read and advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.
The Devil’s Elixir by Ana Calin is an Intriguing Mystery With Lots of Characters.
Viscount Nathaniel Sinclair, the H, and Leader of the Order of the Lords, is an Archangel, Centuries old genetically engineered superhuman, mentor, teacher, confessor, protector, and shield who’s energy balances out Leona.
He’s the only one that can rein in Leona’s powers.
Leona Ignat, the h, is a full-blooded gypsy with natural spellbinding powers, that she is not fully aware of, due to her ancestral legacy.
This story had a few triggers, and it became a bit off kilter for a moment, but it kept my interest, as it all tied together for a HEA.
It was not what I expected, at all!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Finally we get to see Leona’s story. It takes place a few years after the last book and it was just as good as expected. It was a mix of mystery and suspense as I knew something big was going to happen and I was not disappointed. The dark tone went well with the story and kept me guessing and the end was stellar and a great setup of what might come. I was hooked to the end and read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. It was dark yet sexy and I kept rooting for Leona.
I received a arc and volunteer to review this book. This was another fantastic book from a great author. I have loved all the books in this series. Ana books are highly recommend by me. They take us to other places for a bit of enjoyment.
It is three years after Alice and Damian married. Leona is teaching at a school that is bad news. She spent two years in the monastery with Nathaniel and the others getting over her trauma and learning to keep her powers under control. Her powers are manifesting and they are super dangerous…so dangerous in fact that they even tempt the mighty infallible innocent Nathaniel! She is a Lilith core temptress! Someone who is dark is not immune to her power and is leaving bodies in their wake after she speaks a curse upon that person. Nathaniel is doing everything he can personally this time to protect her. Only now, this time it involves him and her both…in a hellish and divine way! Wait until you discover who these two truly are! It is full blown action from start to finish and a few characters return to help complete the story…I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review…I know this is not the complete end of these people…read on and discover…
The Devil’s Elixir (A Superpowers Romance Book 4) Kindle Edition
by Ana Calin (Author)
This book is the first book I’ve read in the series. Luckily the story and the writing are good enough I could plunge in headfirst with very few “Huh?” moments. However, even though there are no ‘I’m totally lost’ moments, there quite a few things that make you go “Hmm’.
The Devil’s Elixir begins as a paranormal murder mystery. The heroine, Leona is seen first in a fight with a fellow teacher who is racist (I’m assuming) because Leona is a Gypsy. He accuses her of all deeds most foul, including seducing a student in her class. Leona makes an off the cuff curse, that later comes true, leaving the accuser lying in the men’s room, dead exactly has she had predicted. Leona is supposed to be celibate for her special super power of curse to be available. I am assuming this is discussed in more length in the first 3 novels because when she breaks her celibacy (which technically is chastity – celibacy means not married, chastity means no sex) there appears to be no direct damage to her power. In fact it increases as her secrets are revealed in a hurried sex scene and post coital moments.
This murder becomes something of a McGuffin, giving Leona an reason to go traipsing off to have all manner of adventures where she discovers who she is, what powers she has and who is her true love.
The sex scenes, all two of them, are some what lacking. One of them lacks a certain finesse with the female body. The other borders on abusive.
The resolution of the murder feels like a throw away, a quick “I’ve written myself in to a corner” explanation. There are literally no clues as to who the killer is, what the motive was and what appear to be red herrings never really feel believable.
The actual writing at times, screams of bad translation or a non-native speaker writing in English, one of the most complex and irritating language around the world, having a touch of Romance Languages and Germanic structure and all sorts of other words thrown in for good measure. Truly, beta-readers could have prevented many of the grammatical errors as well as the wrong homonym being used – for instant Sores are wounds, Soars is to fly or be lifted. This is only one error.
Ms Calin writes the story in present tense, semi-omniscient point of view that flips between Nathaniel (Leona’s love interest) and Leona. The present tense gives the story a sense of constant action. However, there are several times a beta-reader or an editor could have been beneficial – at times the present tense isn’t appropriate. Places where a past tense is necessary.
The mythology, mostly Western and Roma, is well researched and thoroughly saturates the book. This is truly the best part of the novel. I just wanted to wallow in this. Allow, one of the mythological characters doesn’t quite match its Talmudic/Enochian background.
In the blurb for this book, Christine Feehan is referenced. I can definitely see Ms. Feehan’s influence. Nathaniel (or broody love interest) could easily slide into her Carpathian series. The ‘superpowers’ are more like supernatural gifts. When I hear or see ‘superpowers’ I think of super heroes. Other than references to the Hulk, nary a sign of a super hero of villain appear. This is a slight mislabeling that can be forgiven for trying to jump on the current wave of super heroes from Marvel, DC and DC’s alternative label, Vertigo (see Lucifer from the Sandman series).
If you are willing to puzzle out some of the language issues, this book is a fun if not fantastic read. Recommended by The Book Nerd when you are waiting for the latest Nix’s Harem book to come out
I would give it a 3.5 star but since 1/2’s are possible – 4 out of 5 stars
