I really enjoyed this one. The sisters meet up at their mother’s home after she passes to clean out her home and notice the land next door. Is it a cult or a sanctuary? Their other sister, Vanessa, has been missing for so many years and feared dead, but she was supposed to come to their mother’s home but never made it. While cleaning they find clues that Vanessa may have actually been there or at least when their mother was away and so Vanessa may have ventured next door. This leads them to Two Crosses. I highly recommend this story. Go in with an open mind. There are twists and turns, and the story takes you forward in time and back but I hope you enjoy it as I did.
This was a very well written psychological thriller. Its dark, creepy, laden with tension and a lot of emotion. When sisters Celine and Pip are told their mother has died they return to home. They are missing their sister Vanessa, who’s brutal murder remains unsolved. It is developed nicely and is focused, but also paints a great picture so you really become immersed in their story. The narration added to the drama.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.com in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When two sisters reunite at their childhood home in Arundel following the news of their mother’s death, they end up with more than they anticipated. With the murder of their sister years prior in the back of their minds, it hits all too close to home when the body of a young womaIsabel Ashdown n is discovered in a similar fashion. In fact, there are several similarities between the two women’s death, raising the suspicion if, though years apart, they were possibly linked to one another. The biggest similarity, a women’s commune that is close by. When the police start to look to the commune for answers, the sisters, along with the help of an old family friend, also get involved taking it a step further and visiting the place themselves. What they find there is more than they expected. How many secrets lay behind the locked secure gates of Two Cross Farm? Will they finally find the answers to their sister’s death after all these years? Is the women’s commune really who they say they are?
Thank you to Netgalley, Dreamscape, and Isabel Ashdown for the opportunity to read and review this book. When I first started the book, I had no idea what I was in for. I honestly hadn’t even read the summary, I had picked it solely based on the cover and title. It ended up being a great choice! It sucked me right in! I really loved the narrators for this book, Candida Gubbins and Imogen Church. They did an amazing job. I was completely shocked with the twists that surfaced in this book. I’m always down for a good mystery/thriller. They’re my absolute favorite and this one didn’t disappoint. I would highly recommend this book. I rate this
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the voices and the story itself.
The only thing that I was a bit disappointed in that we did not get a clearer picture of what made the mother the way she was, a bit more background (good and bad) on that character would have been welcomed. The only person that had anything good to say and tried to soften the personality of the mother was Una her long term friend.
We didn’t really have a typical cult situation here but it easy to see why the local population would think that way about 33 women living together, dressed the same and except for the farm stand during market day was keeping distant from all outsiders. I can understand the desire of some woman to join this kind of arraignment. To feel protected from what had been harming them previously or simply needing the structured live offered. Not much different from living in a convent except for the religious aspect.
Both sisters a bit estranged from each other, each person dealing with their own set of problems and emotions are trying to find the way back to each other as sister before they drifted apart. Family relationships can be complicated in the best of circumstances, add the extra baggage that these sisters carried and the result can be destructive and full of self-doubt.
Celine and Pip have reunited to sort out their reclusive mother’s belongings after her death and prepare for her funeral. Within her belongings they find, what they hope, is a clue as to who may have killed their sister, Vanessa, who was murdered 15 years ago. They believe their sister was in residence at Two Cross Farm before her death, just as another woman who was recently killed in the same manner as Vanessa.
Determined to find the truth of what really happened to their sister Celine and Pip begin to investigate Two Cross Farm and their leaders.
Two Cross Farm, cult or community? There are always 33 women living here. Known as a safe place for those who have lost their way or have left a fearful domestic situation, the author has described Two Cross Farm as an idyllic place and way of life.
As you read or listen to this book you may not find Two Cross Farm idyllic or the 33 women living there serene as the author would have you think. The characters carry this book with an unbelievable, but excellent written plot as a psychological thriller with many twists and a surprise ending. Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Audio for and early audio version of this book. The comments and review are my honest opinion.
