A “captivating and bittersweet” novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Summer of ‘69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades–but this could be the summer that changes everything (People). When Mallory Blessing’s son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he’s not sure what to expect. But he certainly … he’s not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It’s the late spring of 2020 and Jake’s wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.
There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?
Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother’s bachelor party. Cooper’s friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere–through marriage, children, and Ursula’s stratospheric political rise–until Mallory learns she’s dying.
Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Very real life. Very weird but great book.
Very disappointing.
I was really looking forward to this book as I had read so many glowing reviews. However, I thought it was just okay. I knew the novel would end the way it did. I thought 28 summers was way too many, and it also irritated me that Jake loves Mallory, but married Ursula because of his history with her.
I did enjoy the beginning of each novel where highlights of each year are mentioned. I liked that Mallory was from Baltimore, and I am familiar with Deepdene Rd. and Edgevale Rd. and the country club, Louie’s Bookstore and other places mentioned.
I felt the book went on too long, and I find it difficult to believe the same time next year meeting would be enough for two people so deeply in love.

I enjoyed this book. I do wish it had ended differently, but I did like it. Same Time Next Year!
This was a really different read for me. It’s told from many different perspectives over a 28 year period. It’s a one summer a month love affair that takes place no matter what else is going on in their lives. Wife’s, boyfriends, children or work, once a year nothing else matters. I truly loved Jake and Mallory and their love affair was wonderous and life altering. I have no idea how they did it, or could live with the life they chose. I could have settle for something less than everything. At times it just about broke me. The chemistry and love between them was unforgettable. It was what we all strive for, search for, sacrifice for. And when Mallory finds herself at the end and her son stumbles upon her hard kept secret, nothing else matters. The journey and the people who love you are all that matters when your time comes and I hope you enjoy their story just as much as I have.
28 Summers is a Same Time, Next Year story with wonderful characters! The beginning of each chapter (year) highlights many of the important headlines of that year. Another fantastic read by Elin!
great summer read…a little unbelievable in spots but nevertheless enjoyable
Elin Hildebrand is my younger sister’s favorite writer. My sister loaned me this book to read. It was a gem! I read it quickly and loved it. I had read a couple of her earlier books but this one won me over to want to read more of her books. This is a story of unconventional love and keeping promises, no matter what! Mallory Blessing’s inherits a Nantucket beachfront house from her aunt. She hosts a bachelor party for her brother and falls in love with his best friend from college. Mallory rejects all offers to leave her island. She is hired to teach English at the local high school, and loves her work, She later has a son whom she adores. The story is inspired by the movie, ‘Same Time, Next Year.’ Though the book takes a totally different slant on the concept. It is refreshingly sweet and thought provoking.
Lets face it: It isn’t summer without a Elin Hilderbrand book! 28 Summers will thankfully make you feel like you’re on vacation as you watch star-crossed lovers Jake and Mallory navigate 28 summers of romance and heartache.
Not for me
Elin Hildebrand has another winner. I love her stories!
First I would like to say Blue Bistro was my favorite Elin Hilderbrand book for years but I think this one may be my new one. It’s told in 28 summers and Elin gives us a review of each year before she goes on with the story which I just loved, (the highlights of what happened in the world). I love how she also mentions many things from her other books as well and ties them together to make this a wonderful book. I cried at the ending of this one it was that well written. More then just a beach read for sure!
Wonderfully developed characters.
One of her best books using a very different format.
While this was a good, entertaining and well written story, I really did not like how this couple carried out their relationship. Was she really content with spending only ONE weekend per year for 28 years with the (married) man she loved??? With no contact with him between those weeks?? She never once thought of asking more of him, or breaking it off for her own self esteem?
Loved it, it made me laugh and cry
The best book of Elin Hilderbrand.
This is one of Hilderbrand’s best.
Not good at all. I’m a reader of this author. N usually like all her books
I feel like I’m at a loss for words. Elin was right, this is her best book yet! I absolutely loved 28 Summers, and never wanted it to end. Such an amazing story from an even better story teller. Elin Hilderbrand you truly are the best!
