December 7 is “the date which will live in infamy.” But now Japan is hatching another, far greater plan to bring America to its knees. . . .The Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was a resounding success–except for one detail: a second bombing mission, to destroy crucial oil storage facilities, was aborted that day. Now, in this gripping and stunning work of alternate history, Robert Conroy … Robert Conroy reimagines December 7, 1941, to include the attack the Japanese didn’t launch, and what follows is a thrilling tale of war, resistance, sacrifice, and courage. For when Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto sees how badly the United States has been ravaged in a two-pronged strike, he devises another, more daring proposal: an all-out invasion of Hawaii to put a stranglehold on the American Pacific Fleet.
Yamamoto’s strategy works brilliantly–at first. But a handful of American soldiers and a determined civilian resistance fight back in the face of cruelty unknown in Western warfare. Stateside, a counterassault is planned–and the pioneering MIT-trained aviator Colonel Jimmy Doolittle is given a near-impossible mission with a fleet of seaplanes jury-rigged into bombers. From spies to ordinary heroes and those caught between two cultures at war, this is the epic saga of the Battle of Hawaii–the way it very nearly was. . . .

What would have happened if the Japanese had blown up Pearl Harbor’s fuel tanks, as originally planned? Why, after losing Hawaii to the Japanese, we would have still won WWII, but Even Faster!
Along the way of this implausible journey, we manage to introduce a healthy dose of massive sexism. How? Well, literally *every* …
Brutal
I read his book 1945 and really liked it so when I saw this one it was a no-brainer to get it. I though it was well worth the time
.Not bad for alternative history, a little predictable.
Don’t miss this one. Very good.
Very informative. I was born in 1932and thought it was a time good and bad soldiers.
I read and enjoyed all of Mr. Conroy’s alternate histories. Hard to decide which was the best.
Interesting alternate history bringing in a lot of actual historic figures in slightly different (but ultimately consistent) roles.
Interesting but glad it didnot happen!!
Very interesting alternate history. Well researched, good character development. A bit high priced for an electronic book though.
Enjoyed this book. Great alternative history story
“1942” is a good example of the alternative history genre. The Japanese conquering the Hawaiian Islands is a cool idea for a novel and the author powers through the story at high speed. His use of real historical characters with totally invented ones adds immensely, as does his knowledge of the actual historical events
“1942” is a fun read and …
Imagine how things would have been dramatically different for Hawaii if after the attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese carriers had continued the attack, instead of turning and returning to Japan.
The story takes on a grizzly turn of events for the Americans, native Hawaiians and
Japanese after the islands fall to Japan.
Quite the hot page turner …
From a “what if” perspective, I enjoyed Conroy’s take on how the U.S. might have responded had Japan been successful at Pearl Harbor (meaning they did a more thorough job to the point of invading and annexing Hawaii). Conroy seems to have insight into the minds of both Generals and everyday soldiers on both sides of the battle.
One caveat: there …
Interesting take on alternate history.
This is a riveting read, highly recommend it but definitely not for the squeamish, also not for kids to get their hands on.
Wow! Scary story of what would have happened in 1942 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Couldn’t read it fast enough.
ALT FICTION sometimes is interesting-WHAT IF the attack on Pearl Harbor would of had 3 attack waves instead of 2????????????? What IF????????? Historical WWII individuals plus the authors own group of main individuals. The WHAT IF is a very possible outcome.
Great book to make one think “what if”.
Too much “salty language” My captain once told me that there was a difference between profanity and “appropriate salty language” I think the author would have had a short talk in the cabin from my captain.
That said the story rang true and did show how much change has occurred in our culture from 1942 until now.
