As Black Tuesday triggers financial despondency, three young couples in New York City must trade their lives of luxury for poverty, tragedy, and setbacks. When Jonathan Garrett’s brokerage firm collapses on the day of the Stock Market Crash, he unites with his closest friends (and former business partners), Aryl and Caleb, to relocate, track down a low-paying job, and cultivate a new life. As … life.
As the three men toil in their laborious jobs, their wives, Ava, Arianna, and Claire, slowly adapt to life in a shabby, rundown apartment, learning to sew, cook, and clean. With the help of their former, outspoken, Irish maid, Maura, and a new, equally Irish friend, Shannon, the wives become even closer than before.
The couples’ rocky path leads to more turmoil, however, when a business rival, Victor Drayton, creates one disaster after another. From petty tricks to outright violence, Victor’s nefarious mind will stop at nothing to beat down Jonathan’s last glimmer of hope.
Despite everything, Jonathan and his friends are fixated on surviving.
Emotional and financial destruction nip at their heels, until finally, with a lucky twist of fate, they escape city life and begin anew in their hometown of Rockport, Massachusetts.
A story set in the past, 1929 is full of romance, drama, and humor. Vivid, expertly crafted characters make this novel more than memorable—1929 is unforgettable.

Moving story of young couples following the crash of 1929.
In the 1929 stock market crash, three lifelong friends in New York lose everything, including the brokerage which made them rich. Homes, cars, and servants disappear. With few possessions, they rent tenement apartments, do manual labor, and with their wives struggle to rebuild their lives. Pursued by the violent past fiancé of one of the wives, …
Very educational for me as to the reality of the crash
I was unsure of this one when I first picked it up but I’m really glad I persevered with it!
From the beginning of the story we are living through the initial shock wave of the Wall Street crash and the subsequent fallout which couldn’t fail to hit every household in however small a way. We follow the lives of three young couples and how they …
I downloaded this book during a promotional the author held a very long time ago.
This book had me more in tears, not that it was a tearjerker, but I couldn’t help myself. It brought back so many painful memories of my own. So to me, this was more like a reminiscent time which had more questions than answers to me. For instance, where were my …
Very interesting series that seems to depict well the era in which the series takes place.
Very enthralling book. Wow. To start with everything in the morning and to end the day with nothing is quite devastating. It was quite interesting to see how each character handled their change in circumstances and the adaptations they made to accommodate their lowered circumstances. This book set the tone for the rest of the series; so, you know …
It really made me thankful. Very descriptive about what people went through. Needs to be a series made out of these books for TV.
A historic novel centered right after the 1929 crash. 3 couples with lives intertwined, have to find a way to survive.
I loved this book and it’s characters and want to read the rest of the books in the series. A wonderful glimpse into the world after the banks failing. Thank you for sharing this with us
The friendships both men and wives in this book are amazing. The characters are able to withstand all life throws at them. Times of depression when many lost all they had. A journey on how friends continue to survive and trust one another.
I started reading this and after 50 pages put aside for a while. The characters were to good at that point. Later I went back and was really hooked. I went on to read book 2 and 3. Wow! How different the approach in book 2. Holds your interest.
Great characters!
I’ve read the entire 6-book 1929 series and enjoyed following the journey of Jonathan and Ava; Aryl and Claire; and Caleb and Arianna. Their riches to poverty story takes place at the beginning and aftermath of the stock market crash of 1929. Though not a fast moving series, it is an inspiring saga of the loyalty and friendship within these …
Excellent book and series.
I don’t usually read serials but really liked this series.
Very enjoyable read. Looking forward to more of this author
After the first couple of chapters, I thought the story would prove predicable. I pushed through and was soon smitten by the characters and the challenges of the Great Depression, even for the rich. I quickly finished the book and the series.
Fast read and a good plot. Will continue on with the second book in this series.
Enjoyed the characters and how they dealt with problems that persisted in 1929
