As Black Tuesday triggers financial despondency, three young couples in New York City must trade their lives of luxury for poverty, tragedy, and setbacks. When Jonathan Garrett’s brokerage firm collapses on the day of the Stock Market Crash, he unites with his closest friends (and former business partners), Aryl and Caleb, to relocate, track down a low-paying job, and cultivate a new life. As … life.
As the three men toil in their laborious jobs, their wives, Ava, Arianna, and Claire, slowly adapt to life in a shabby, rundown apartment, learning to sew, cook, and clean. With the help of their former, outspoken, Irish maid, Maura, and a new, equally Irish friend, Shannon, the wives become even closer than before.
The couples’ rocky path leads to more turmoil, however, when a business rival, Victor Drayton, creates one disaster after another. From petty tricks to outright violence, Victor’s nefarious mind will stop at nothing to beat down Jonathan’s last glimmer of hope.
Despite everything, Jonathan and his friends are fixated on surviving.
Emotional and financial destruction nip at their heels, until finally, with a lucky twist of fate, they escape city life and begin anew in their hometown of Rockport, Massachusetts.
A story set in the past, 1929 is full of romance, drama, and humor. Vivid, expertly crafted characters make this novel more than memorable—1929 is unforgettable.

The stock market has crashed and three wealthy couples who have been friends for years must come to grips with suddenly losing everything. Well, not everything, only material things because they still have each other. This is the story of how they band together to stay together and help each other through these tumultuous times.
I normally like …
This series by M L Gardner has a unique list of characters and let’s you look into the troubling times of the 20’s and 30’s and what crisis that families faced just to exist. The series I really feel would make a wonderful TV series, similar to the Walton’s, but with a rougher edge. Gardner is a writer who paints the story in the mind…it would …
Enjoy this era. Liked the struggles these three couples endured.
1929 and 1930 are two books in a series by M.L. Gardiner. The first book begins in October of 1929 and the second book ends in August of 1930. The opening is just as you can imagine: three couples (Jonathon and Ava, Aryl and Clair, Caleb and Arianna) have been living the high life fueled by a skyrocketing stock Market. Trips to Paris and London, …
I liked it because it showed a personal side to a historical event.
One of my favorite time periods. Well done!
Very slow moving. I had a hard time finishing it although I knew it would turn out okay.
This book is a winner from page one right to the last page. You laugh, you cry, you hope, you dream right along with the characters. I can’t wait to read 1930, the first sequel.
I found this a very interesting depiction of the struggles that professional people were faced with after the 1929 stock market crash.
This series of books about the Greqt Depression and three couples who lived through it is absolutely captivating. The ups and downs of those difficult days kept me reading day and night. One of the best descriptions of what life was like during those extremely difficult years.
I read this a while ago and would highly recommend it. Very good book
It may be hard to get into 1st chapter but once stories develop this is a page turner and sometimes emotional packed realistic story
Very well written. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Likes it very much except the way it ended. Book 2 so far is not continuing on with the story
She really researched this era well. A good look into those rich people that lost everything. I learned a great deal about the beginning of the early depression years. Page turner.
I LOVED the whole series. I wish M.L Gardner would have continued or at least done one last book to finish the saga and not leave me hanging.
This is a great way to learn about the various impacts of the Great Depression from Day 1. It is grounded in just enough historical fact, characters that are flawed humans struggling when the ground has shifted beneath their feet, and drama that you don’t want the story to end. Which, by the way, it doesn’t as the sequel starts up as another …
Very historical fiction. With real carectors licensing very real life.
Absolutely loved this book! It takes the reader into lives during the depression. I really enjoyed this book!
I really enjoyed this series but made the mistake of reading them out of order. If someone is in tin this series be sure to read them in the correct order.
