Sometimes it’s enough to make a girl NOT want to put a ring on it. When it comes to facing an 18-caliber killer, what will Maizie put up as the target? Her heart or her life?

Larissa Reinhart has once again penned a wonderfully comedic yet intense mystery. 18 Calibre is the story of main character Maisie Albright as she and mentor Wyatt Nash work to assist her mother, Vicki Albright, as she hosts a contingent of Chinese Nationals in her home as they prepare to film the new predicted blockbuster Unlucky 18. As Vicki pushes to protect her houseguests, Maisie is tasked with finding the whereabouts of both the movie’s star LiLi’s Kung fu master and her boyfriend Jeff Johnson.
Maisie tries with all her might to put the pieces in place, but the only piece she really cares about is her mentor Wyatt Nash. When people end up dying and others disappear, it is time for a different tactic. And when that different tactic includes rare bullets and dead people they strike off in a different direction. In all this Wyatt ends up pursuing leads in Florida while Maisie follows the evidence at home in Black Pine, Ga. What neither expects is the depth of deceit. What both expect is to resume their investigation together. The actuality is very different.
This is another laugh out loud mystery by Ms. Reinhart. While the humor is widespread, the tale of international espionage is focused. Maisie learns many new lessons, but the adversaries seem to remain one step ahead. This leads to an intense conclusion with unexpected outcomes.
As with all the books in this series, Maisie Albright Star Detective, there is a blend of country calm and big city angst. With the multiple developments this story presents, the reader will be led on a high paced trip through a new and delightful story. With international overtones, this story takes the reader on a brand new journey ending back in Boomer’s kitchen.
I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!
I love this series! The audiobooks are well done and the narrator fits the part perfectly. Maizie Albright is a former actress and her mother, Vicki, was her manager and is still interfering in her life. Maizie is on probation for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and she is trying to get her life back on track. She is in training to become a Private Investigator and she is learning the ropes. Wyatt Nash is her boss and there is a mutual attraction between them. Nash’s security company ran into some financial problems and now Vicki owns the security company and is calling the shots. In 18 Caliber, book 6 in the series, Maizie and Nash are hired by Vicki who has movie people staying at her house. The star, Lili Lang’s kung fu coach is missing and then her boyfriend disappears. There are a lot of unusual things going on and many of the people are keeping secrets including Vicki. Maizie and Nash work together along with a couple of Maizie’s friends to get to the bottom of this case. The characters are likable and interesting and the cozy mystery is intriguing plus there is humor and some romance. Very enjoyable. Thank you to Larissa Reinhart for the audiobook to review! This is my honest review and the opinions are my own.
Oh WOW!!!!!! This is another fantastic book! The story was wonderful and entertaining. In my opinion, the book kept my attention and interest throughout its entirety so much I had a hard time putting the book down. I thought the mystery was engaging and had many twists and turns till the end. Excellent character development led to realistic characters entwined with a well-developed plot that leaves you guessing who the actual murderer really was. I have grown very fond of the characters, they are phenomenal, in this series, and I just love how their interpersonal relationships have progressed over time. The characters are genuine and Maizie and Remi are adorable. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
I have long been a fan of Larissa Reinhart, and 18 Caliber is exactly why she is one of my “go-to authors.” She knows just the perfect combination of mystery, romance, and laughs!
Maizie and Nash are adjusting to working for her controlling and egocentric mother, Vicki. They are doing more security rather than investigation, but all that changes when a man goes missing, there is a mysterious shooting and a bullet in a door…all three things lead back to, you got it, Vicki. Could she actually be involved in it? It is up to Nash and Maizie to find out. Buckle up, it’s a wild ride with twists and turns told in only the way Reinhart can tell it!!!!!
As much as the mystery dominates the book, the characters are getting more fleshed out, and I am learning things about them I didn’t know. For example, Vicki might actually be human!!!!! As always, I love Maizie and Nash. Their relationship seems to be moving along, but some changes are on the way for them. I am highly anticipating the next book to join them in their next pursuit. In addition, I’m eager to see where Vicki is going!
If you like your mysteries with humor and romance, with quirky characters, you can’t go wrong with anything that Larissa Reinhart writes!!!! She is an incredibly gifted storyteller!
“But Vicki would always be my mother…No matter what she did I wouldn’t abandon her. Although it felt like she was driving me towards an ultimatum I didn’t want to face.”
In, this, the sixth Mazie Albright book, we find Mazie and Nash working for Vicki since she bought a controlling stake in Nash’s business. Never mind that it *might* be a violation of her parole or anything…. While making Vicki’s house more secure, they get involved in an international mystery that Mazie isn’t sure she actually wants to get involved with because Vicki just could be a suspect. However, her houseguests definitely are. Now if she could just get Charles to stop looking at her as an appetizer!
How does she do it? Larissa Reinhart’s way with worlds, settings and characters suck you in and don’t let go until you’ve read the last of the story. Tremendously entertaining, this book is the best of the bunch….until the next one of course… Highly recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and voluntarily chose to read and review it]
“18 Caliber” (Ok, you know it has a gun involved there somewhere!) has Maizie Albright at it again! Resurrecting her old Julie Pinkerton, Teen Detective and Kung Fu Kate movie/TV moves to help her defeat the bad guys—and find out if one of the bad guys is her own mother/former manager! One crazy turn after another! Still in the arms of her cohort in deduction Wyatt Nash! Romantic comedy mystery at its best!
Maizie and Mike and the PI business have some major issues, starting with Vicki Albright, Maizie’s mother. Vicki’s the boss and hired her to find the missing coach for her newly acquired star, Lili. And Lili wants them to find her new love, Jefferson. Not sure of the plot of Unlucky 18, but involvement in that movie is certainly unlucky for a lot of people, Maizie included.
The pace of the story is quick and the characters interesting. There are tensions on the business level (Unlucky 18) as well as on the personal level for Maizie, Mike, Vicki, and her father. Good to see that Maizie’s salon friends are there for her. If you’ve enjoyed the earlier books in this series, you will find this one entertaining, especially the ending resolution. Although this is a stand-alone mystery, I’d recommend you start at the beginning (I did) to truly appreciate Vicki.
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.
Oh, how I love Maizie and Nash! During these uncertain times of pandemic, social distancing, telework, and homecooked meals, it is such a pleasure to read a fabulous book from one of my favorite authors and get lost to the real world for a bit. I call it cheap therapy.
This go round begins with our loveable Maizie and swoon-worthy Nash doing mundane security jobs (and not mixing business with pleasure) for their new employer Vicki (the mother we all love to hate). The real mystery begins when Vicki calls in a panic demanding their presence at her castle to investigate a mysterious bullet hole in her front door while she is hosting a house party of high flying actors and their minions. After one of the guests vanishes, Maizie and Nash head to Florida where they find the missing person who soon becomes a found corpse. Nash stays behind in Florida and Maizie heads back to Vicki’s to find some answers. The story ends in an exciting climax in more ways than one.
The side story is just as thrilling as the mystery. Maizie and her father have a falling out. Nash and Vicki have a falling out. Maizie and Nash have a falling out. Hidden secrets are revealed. New relationships abound. Remi is as adorable as ever adding comic relief in every scene she’s in. The only thing missing was Giulio….the loveable airhead, and Jolene Sweeney…Nash’s achilles heel.
The sign of a great author is one that is not afraid to develop and change the characters’relationships and offer them personal growth. Ms. Reinhart does that well in this installment. I cannot wait to see what happens next for Maizie and Nash.
I did request and receive this ARC, and also pre-ordered my own copy (because I love this series SO MUCH).
I have read a few of the Maizie’s stories and enjoyed everyone of them. They are funny, and the characters are wonderful. I especially enjoyed Maizie’s sister in this story…she is a hoot! A great read to keep your mind off of the terrible time we are all going through now. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
18 Caliber is number 6 in the Maizie Albright series by Larissa Reinhart. Maizie Albright is still working as an apprentice toward becoming a private investigator at Nash Security Investigations; living at home with her father and his second family; riding her mini-bike to get where ever she may need to go; and still trying to gain her mother Vicki’s love and approval. Maizie is also working toward confirming her relationship with Wyatt Nash who is also her boss and attempting to get both of her parents to approve of Nash as well as the relationship.
Vicki had traded her half of Nash’s Security from Nash’s ex-wife, Jolene, for a hefty amount of cash so now Nash and Maizie were working for Maizie’s mother which mostly amounted to locating spy equipment in the trailer’s on the movie lot and any in Vicki’s mansion. Vicki has most of the film’s actors and actresses staying in her house. When the star of 18 Caliber personal trainer comes up missing, it is up to Maizie and Nash to find out where he is.
As always I was entertained by the well rounded characters in this book. My heart was cheering for Maizie and her attempt to reach her many goals. Her relationship with her little sister, Remi, who is a mini-me of Maizie will warm you. There are a lot of characters to deal with but each of them have a special role in the book, even down to Charles, a super red Arowana dragon fish.
18 Caliber is my favorite book of the Maizie Albright Star Detective series so far; the characters are showing new dimensions but they are still the same great people we have come to love, or hate. Maizie’s world is never simple but working for her mother has created a whole new level of crazy and that crazy leads to complex, complicated, and convoluted clues, or lack thereof, thanks in great part to Vickie whose lies and obstruction are not the source of the road blocks Maizie and Nash face in their efforts to locate a missing man and figure out how a bullet casing ended in Vickie’s fish tank and more as the case proceeds. Vickie is flexing her control over the company and the couple, who are finally enjoying a real relationship, are finding it as blocked as their investigation.
Still tons of fun but sometimes I wish the couple would get a few more breaks. I know it would change the whole series and I don’t want it to change but still, sigh, I love Maizie and Nash.
I requested and received an ARC from the author because I enjoy the series so much but I still pre-ordered my own copy. I will be shouting more about it when it is released, that is what I do.
I am so enjoying this series. Is Maizie ever going to catch a break? Nah, she wouldn’t be near as entertaining. Which do you think is the better parent, Vicki or Boomer? They are quite the pair! You know who really tickles me? Remi. That child is a trip. Kind of reminds me of some people I know. I loved this story line. It certainly had some twists and turns to it. There are several guest characters with starring roles in this book. They were great but I really love our regulars the best. Course, some of our guests may show up again, who knows. I can’t wait for the next adventures of Maizie, Nash, and the gang. I received an ARC of this book, but my opinion is my own.
Delightfully dysfunctional!
Maizie Albright is at it again in her best, but sometimes inept, and always hilarious, detective manner. Larissa Reinhart manages to combine a solid crime mystery with humor and some romance. With two control-freak parents, it’s a wonder Maizie manages to hold onto her sanity as she pursues the clues with Nash, her mentor and love interest. This is a great series.
4 Star review 18 Caliber (A Maizie Albright Star Detective Mystery #6) by Larissa Reinhart
Audio Review:
Maizie Albright is frustrated, her mother Vicki Albright has taken over Nash Security Services where she has been learning the ropes to become a private investigator. Between working and juggling their business and personal relationships, Maizie and Nash have their hands full.
Add in their latest client Lili Lian who appears to be surrounded by bad luck and things are about to become complicated. This book is full of twists, turns, suspense and witty banter.
I am enjoying this series and again the narrator Joan Dukore really brought this story to life for me.
