America’s beloved and distinguished historian presents, in a book of breathtaking excitement, drama, and narrative force, the stirring story of the year of our nation’s birth, 1776, interweaving, on both sides of the Atlantic, the actions and decisions that led Great Britain to undertake a war against her rebellious colonial subjects and that placed America’s survival in the hands of George … Washington.
In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence–when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.
Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color, farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King’s men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.
Written as a companion work to his celebrated biography of John Adams, David McCullough’s 1776 is another landmark in the literature of American history.more
As with all of McCullough’s books he turns history into entertainment. I highly recommend all of his books.
Any book by McCollough is worth reading
He is a great historian
This is a well written must read for a good understanding of the the early days of the revolution and how close the colonies came to a defeat.
For some reason, I always believed that ‘1776’ covered all of the American Revolution, not just primarily the events during the year 1776. But that was my mistake. I knew, or at least I hoped, that it would be as good as what others have said. And they were right. I loved how full the story felt. It wasn’t just the American’s point of view, it was …
Well written and a product of much research.
Wonderful book on the founding of America.
One of his best, except for John Adams I really liked it too.
Very well written. Very informative, exciting account.
Great storytelling and wonderful history. Enjoy every book.
I’m a big fan of David McCullough’s books. I enjoy his writings on the various subjects that he writes about on their history.
Great early American History Book that is fun to read.
Great history book
Meh, Washington’s crossing was much better, felt it was didactic
An older book, that I’m glad I read. You think you know how we won our independence, but it really was by the skin of our teeth.
I love David McCullough!
Good positive read about the year 1776
great look at early US history
David McCullough! Nothing more needs to be said.
1776 is an enjoyable history book that puts you on into the world of early America and the amazing fortitude and abilities of those who believed in fighting for independence. I found so much more information about this chapter in U.S. history than I learned in school. The writing is entertaining and understandable . Definitely not dry or boring.
Historical account of 1776!
Excellent historical accounting
