In a town like Flintlock, Prudence Penderhaus was a freak. A weirdo. A loser of epic proportions. That was until one word changed her life, and the town of Flintlock, forever. When a moment of long-awaited courage brings her to the porch of the town-dubbed spook house, uncovering an odd boy no one knew existed is only the beginning. My name is Prudence Penderhaus. I’ve never done anything … never done anything remarkable. Never evenbothered to look up.
Until the day I found out I was dying.

This story was amazing!!! I have to say that the cover is what caught my eye. R. M. Gilmore is off the chain. She knows how to grab your attention and keep a hold of your interest until the last word of the book. There is a mystery and suspense throughout the story. I never saw what was coming around the bend. This story is about Prudence. She is a diamond in the ruff. The other kids as well as Prue does not think so. She is a strong and will not back down if she believes in. She meets a boy from the “spook house”. There is so much more in the story but I am not a fan of spoilers. Enjoy 17 Marigold Lane and keep your eyes open to see what is coming next.
RM Gilmore has done something few authors are able to do and switched genres with the grace and ease of a true pro, which she totally is. 17 Marigold Lane is cool as hell – sarcasm, sass and a whole lot of heart wrapped in a big red headed burrito. Pru is a true hero. I can’t wait for the next one.
As an asd mum, i find I’m hyper critical of how authors handle portraying autistic people. I’m would aware of the honest quote that, “if you’ve meet one person with autism, then you’ve only met one face of autism”, because it isn’t identical for any two people with this unique trait (it’s not a disease, they’re not sick they’re merely different).
Cassius showed several attributes that are familiar without being identical. His snapping as a self stimulation for one (one of mine taps their index or middle finger and thumb the other flaps) as well as the speech/sound patterns.
Prudence was a badass in ways I’m not sure she even fully understands. Her battle with cancer was there enough to keep you worried what would happen to her but it wasn’t her defining characteristic. Even when she was reckless or making a bad decision you couldn’t help but root for her as you knew the motives were good.
The mystery of Andrew, of what is going on with that misogynistic sheriff, why the chosen boys seem to not be punished; all of this kept me on the edge of my seat. And while this story is summed up there are enough strings still dangling that i can’t wait for book two to see what’s next.
Not your daughter’s YA!
What do you do when you find out you may die soon?
Well, if you’re Prudence Penderhaus, you get brave.
She visits the spook house.
That one visit, changes the lives of a few people. Especially Cassius Shooster.
No one knew about Cassius. The boy hidden away. The high functioning Autistic boy. The dangerous boy.
Now, there is a lot that happens, so I don’t want to say too much.
The writing is great and kept my attention, which hasn’t been an easy feat lately. RM Gilmore did a fantastic job of writing Cassius and showing us just a glimpse of what he is capable of. Just because you’re different, doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you, or that you’re dangerous.
I can’t wat for 19 Marigold Lane. What will Pru stir up next?
I loved this story! This is a well written story with well developed characters. This was an emotional roller coaster for me. One minute I was laughing and the next crying but loving it all the same. This is Pru’s story. When she finds out that she has cancer, instead of feeling sorry for herself she takes life on where she meets Cassius. Life throws them curveballs, will they come out okay together? They support each other and made me feel part of their story. A must read!
