In truth, I found the whole series idea original and entertaining. Stephanie weaves a funny and entertaining story!
Sometimes you read a book that makes you want to read it again and again. This is one of those books for me.
Mavin returns to Grandmother Mabel’s house after her boyfriend and acting career went down the tubes. She doesn’t know what she is going to do, but her grandmother convinces her to become a professional mourner at funerals. She does this and is smitten by the deceased nephew Jake. Jake finds out who she really is and is very hurt by this as he feels she lied to him. Then things just snowball from there, including her grandmother being attacked! So Roseann was murdered and the murderer is still out there. Can they find out who the killer is and who is attacking the people in the gates over 50 community and why? You will have to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book.
This book was well done, and so was the audio. It was an intriguing, quick listen with quirky characters and kept me interesed until the very last. Nicely done!

Fun series!! Mavens returns home to live with her grandmother after her acting career goes South. When the daughter of her grandmother’s best friend dies, she gets involved by being a professional mourner. After her grandmother is attacked, she sets out to discover who is behind the attack and murder. Love reading the books in this series!!
Will it be all over when he discovers her identity?
Oh boy, where to start with this one? Mourning After almost starts off with a cat fight in a retirement community and it takes off on a whirlwind of murder and mayhem that may or may not include a romantic meal at the Biltmore Estate. Not to mention the group of sassy senior citizens that will keep you laughing and made me hope that I’m half as much fun when I reach that age.
Stephanie Damore did a great job with this book. I have to admit that I did actually guess the killer’s identity fairly early on but then the author tossed in some distractions and I set aside my guess for quite awhile.
The Funeral Fakers series of cozy mysteries has been such a delight to read and when I finish one I find myself more than ready to just keep right on going and start the next one. If you love cozy mysteries with a dash of romance and some definite comedy this book, and series, will be right up your alley.
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
A cute, entertaining tale, a great unpredictable mystery, with wonderful characters, especially the elderly people, you are never to old for love! Full of surprises and adventures, with lots of family drama! Everyone knows someone just like these characters, some of us even have family members just like them! Lots of exciting adventures lead to danger, chaos, secrets, betrayal and murder with an unexpected ending! Fantastic story! Loved it!
A great addition to the series!
very enjoyable
Exit Stage Left is looking for another professional mourner. Having more credit card debt that she’d ever publicly admit to, Maven has no choice but to accept the job. The job surely wouldn’t be that hard. Just pretend to know the deceased for a few hours, shed a couple of tears, tell some nice, albeit fake, stories, and collect a check. Easy peasy. But not as easy peasy as she thinks; a murder happens and since the Sheriff is too sick to deal with it, Maven steps in with the help of Jake, the deceased’s nephew. Who doesn’t know who she really is, since it’s his grandmother who hired Maven…
It was a pleasant read. Very enjoyable. With a surprising end! Maven is a nice person. I really liked it! And I would love to visit those gardens wow.
Can Maven solve the mystery of Roseanne’s death? She must acts as her counselor in her funeral, a difficult task given the fact hat no one liked Roseanne. But Maven meets Jake, Roseanne’s nephew and they connect instantly. But everybody near Roseanne seems to be in danger until her assassin will be caught. A funny story.
This is book 4 in the Funeral Fakers Series and if I had to give a one-word review it would be hilarious! Since I don’t have to stop at one word, let me continue by saying this book had me laughing, talking out loud and a couple of times just wanting the shake some sense into ALL of the main characters. No spoilers in this review, just know that it is super funny and easy to read, characters and settings that you can picture in your imagination since the descriptions and story development were outstanding. There is are twists and turns, secrets and lies, tons of mystery mixed with deception and just a little bit of romance and good clean fun. So join Maven, Jake, Gran and the rest of the quirky characters, and dive into all the possible scenarios until you uncover the identity of the murderer. A total surprise! All in all a fun book and story, written by an A#1 author. By the way, if you haven’t read the others, you really need to; although all the books stand alone and independent of each other, they are all such fun and you won’t be sorry, especially the one by Sam Cheever, Mourning Commute! I received an ARC of this book and this is my own, unsolicited, honest opinion!
This is book 4 in the funeral fakers series of cozy mysteries. They each are written by different authors and are standalone stories. You can read them in order or start with this one which ever way you choose just read them.
This story had several feisty elderly folks being attacked and the common thread was Roseanne. When Rosie is murdered they all set put to find out who did it. There is a little romance and a lot of suspects. See if you can figure out who did it before the end of the story.
Mourning After is book 4 in a series of books about professional mourners. It is very well written. I love a mystery where I cannot figure out who did it. There are very interesting (even quirky) characters and several subplots to keep you guessing. Several characters are older which I find nice because I am much older. There is also a lot of humor despite the requisite funeral. I found this a most enjoyable mystery.
This was a fun read with great characters. The premise of this series is a hoot and gets its characters into some interesting situations. Another fun addition to the series.
I volunteer to read a ARC and this is my honest opinion.
What a delightful read! This cozy mystery is skillfully plotted, filled with interesting characters and has a surprise ending I never expected. I really liked the older characters and hope to see these folks in future books! I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
Astonishing read. Couldn’t put it down just to see what happened. Wow!!!! Never expected anything like this!!!! Definitely a must read to find out what!!!!
Cozy Mystery in North Carolina
This fun cozy mystery involves all sorts of quirky people from all walks of life.
The plot is nicely done. There is plenty of humor to offset the crimes. I received this ARC book for free and this is my honest review.
I love reading a mystery that makes me wait till near the end to figure it out. The question is how do you tell someone that you just met what you do etc…, then figure out what happened on top of that.
Great series of funeral mourners or fakers as called in this series did and do exist. I remember from history class in school of funeral mourners; they were always dressed in black. I admit that I had to google to refresh my old memory and that was how I found out that the profession is still around.
Do not worry if you have not read the previous ones. Each book is its own identity. I know because I did get to read book 2 in the series. Each stands alone to use the jargon.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
