Before he claims his mate, she must be brought to heel.Skylar Owen is not used to taking orders from anyone and the last thing she wants in her life is an alpha who will demand her submission, but her world is turned upside down after a band of rogue wolves attacks her small, all-female pack. Ordered to disband her pack so that she can be matched with a mate, Skylar defies the Ruling Council, … Ruling Council, only to be hunted down and captured.
Though he can tell Skylar will be trouble the moment he sets eyes on her, Dylan Grainger knows how to tame a wayward woman, and it isn’t long before the beautiful, feisty redhead is tearfully promising obedience as her bare bottom is soundly spanked. But Dylan quickly realizes that Skylar is much more than just a headstrong female in need of an alpha’s firm-handed correction.
With each passing day, he grows more certain that she is his mate, and he knows that soon he must claim her, mark her, and take her hard and thoroughly. But will she resist her instincts, or will her body’s response to his bold dominance leave her in no doubt that she belongs to him?
Publisher’s Note: Brought to Heel is a stand-alone novel which is the first entry in the Wayward Mates series. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book. Also note that Brought to Heel shares its setting with Adaline Raine’s previously published books Marked by the Alpha and Rules of the Pack, and it was written only after receiving Adaline’s permission and support.

‘Brought to Heel’ is the first book in Delta James’ “Wayward Mates” series and I have to admit, I’m reading these out of order. You see, I discovered Ms. James’ writings and then found myself at the tail-end of the series. Now, I’m back-tracking after all this time in order to catch up on all the delicious details in this series that I’ve previously missed. That describes this book to a T, DELICIOUS DETAILS. Skylar Owen was previously married to Micah, her Alpha when he was murdered. It destroyed her world, left a hole in her heart, and she grieved … until she got mad. She tracked every man who had worked together to murder her mate and destroyed them, eye for an eye but she left the pack. She didn’t the repercussions she knew would be coming to affect her pack and set up her own refuge. That brought in more women who had either been abused by their mate or wanted to be free of a male patriarchal society. When the Ruling Council had received numerous complaints about a female-only pack, they set about banning them wanting to put the women’s name into a lottery to dole out like prizes. Dylan Grainger had other ideas. He, along with a few other packs, admired the women’s tenacity, cunning, and loyalty and thought if they couldn’t be left alone then they should be given the opportunity to select their own mates and he intended to see that happen before the Ruling Council decided to step in. This was a wonderful introduction to all the main players I have been reading about in the newer stories and gave me so much background I wasn’t aware of. The chemistry between Skylar and Dylan, Darcy and Jean-Michele, and many others who found their fated mate during this story was sizzling. The adventure, drama, fear, excitement, intellect, and insecurities brought me so close to these characters they felt as if I knew them personally. I want more and I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to start on what I missed.
When her mate is killed Skylar forms her own all women pack, all the women have been abused or mistreated by men. They rely on one another and have a special strength banded together. When Skylar is informed she must disband her pack and all the women will be put in other packs, she does’ the one thing she knows will help the ladies stay free. They plan and when the time comes they will run.
Dylan is the strong alpha of his pack and making his way to help with the relocating of the female pack.He is ready for Skylar and knows she will fight till the end to keep her packs freedom. What she didn’t anticipate was Dylan . (less)
Holy shiznet!!! This story is gr8. Not only does it have a lot of hot sex, but it’s a story. In this story, the males rule and the females are submissive to them. The alpha wolves are very dominant and punish their women with lots of spankings. So there being a secret pack of all females is considered taboo. Skylar being the alpha of this pack is strong and independent and is not going to let any man rule her. But like all secrets, things change. Dylan is an alpha of a different pack and offers to help disband Skylar’s pack and absorb them into his own. He soon he realizes Skylar is his mate. This author is new to me, and I hope it won’t be my last time reading her books.
I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
This is another book I would recommend you read and judge for yourself. I am once again conflicted. I liked the storyline of an all female pack. I didn’t mind the idea of them joining a layer lack for safety. I didn’t like the way they were forced to join. I also didn’t like what Sky did with the island the women lived in and how they were made to leave.
I liked that Dylan afforded the other women three option to choose their mates. The process with the knot…no, just no. I liked most of the characters in the pack.
I think I have to remember that although they take human form, they are wolf shifters and as such, there is a hierarchy that requires dominance and submission. The whole animal kingdom thing. I was ok with Sky accepting Dylan and her new position until I discovered she came AFTER his Beta and Omega.
As you can see, there are things that I liked and didn’t like. Maybe I’m over analyzing things. Overall, I found it to be interesting. I would give the book 3.5 stars.
I loved that Skylar was brave enough to avenge her first husband an start her own pack. Dylan respected and admired her strength before he fell in love. This is a love story of two strong people fining each other and exploring all the venues and expressions of their love.
I’m going to start this one off by saying that it is a little dark and has elements of D/s. It neither of those things are your cup of tea then please keep scrolling. However, if you like your men a little more Alpha then Alpha, and you like your women strong, but also being “put in their place” then one click this one right now. There isn’t any abuse, or even strong discipline, but the women aren’t treated as equals and they are punished for not following the orders given by the men.
Now that I’ve got that out of the way I will tell you about how much I loved this one. A lot! It was very easy to connect with Skylar and Dylan. I loved the chemistry they had, and the sexy scenes were HOT. The story line was also enjoyable and had everything from danger and suspense to moments of tenderness and even some humor. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading anything by Delta James before, but I am sure a fan now. I can’t wait to dive into more of her work.
Absolutely loved this book. Great first book in the series. Well written and characters you’d really like to meet
Apparently independent females are a threat to shifter society.
I should point out that I generally like D/S and spanking stories, but I just could not accept the premise of this book. The essential message was that females had to be mated and submissive to men because it was right and appropriate. I don’t even mind dubcon when it is acknowledged, even tacitly, that it is wrong. The approach in this story just didn’t work for me.
The story itself was very well written and there multiple steamy sex scenes, so if the premise doesn’t bother you, then you will probably enjoy this one.

Skylar Owen and Alpha Dylan Grainger’s story is a well-written story that has a lot of decisions that have to be made about the all-female pack. A love story of a lot of females but also a lot of discipline as they try to come into a world ruled by strong men. Brought to Heel is the best title for this book. A pack of female werewolves is forced to disband, because they are a threat to the males. I did like this book, but the females of this world are treated like little girls that need to be handled by the males. It can be a bit off putting. Yes, I will continue to read this series, though.
