In their world, telling the truth has become the most dangerous crime of all.
In the near-future United States, a one-child policy is ruthlessly enforced. Everyone follows the Rule of One. But Ava Goodwin, daughter of the head of the Texas Family Planning Division, has a secret—one her mother died to keep and her father has helped to hide for her entire life.
She has an identical twin sister, … identical twin sister, Mira.

Yet Another YA Dystopia With A Few Interesting Twists. As a YA Dystopia, this book fits pretty squarely within the mold. To the tune that it can easily become forgettable to an extent. But there are some interesting twists to the mold that make this stand out a bit – the focus on twins without any form of romantic subplot chief among them, but also some of the overall tech and concepts about when, how, where, and to a lesser extent why the dystopia could emerge. Ultimately this is interesting enough as a “pilot” to want to see the next episode before making a decision on whether to keep going or not, and sometimes that is good enough. 🙂 Recommended.
I thought this was a fun read and when I came to review the book, I saw the average rating on Goodreads was 3.77, and I wanted to read some of the lower starred reviews to see people’s grievances with a book that I completely enjoyed. I think if you’re an adult, who isn’t a fan of YA to begin with, then this probably isn’t the book for you (and why would you read a genre you don’t like anyway?) Up until last year, I didn’t read a lot of fantasy or dystopian, and I’m glad I started because I love Dystopian and Saunders has given us a great premise here.
The emotional toll of having to raise twins as one child would be unbearable. And we see a bit of the toll on Mira (who is pretty whiny to me, but I completely get that having to live your life as your twin sister Ava would majorly suck). As the first book from an author, this was well done. Yes there were some sketchy decisions made, and some things scenes seemed a bit repetitive and not needed, but I think the setup for this dystopian future was great, and the way the US reacted to this new future seemed plausible. Overall a fun read and I’m looking forward to starting book 2.
This is a YA dystopian tale about identical twin sisters, one of whom must remain secret due to a one-child policy in the future US. Of course, this secret doesn’t remain secret, and they must run for their lives from a corrupt government. Well-written, character-driven, and action-packed, the pages flew by. If you like YA dystopian tales, check this one out!
Good and entertaining…but not good enough to venture into part 2.
A tale of twin teenage girls in a dystopian future where they’ve committed the ultimate crime – being born twins.
It was a good book, though I felt the major altercation at the end was a bit forced. If you are a fan of things like Maze Runner or Hunger Games, you might want to give this one a shot.
I enjoyed this book – original concept – interesting I have the second book on order.
Ashley and Leslie Saunders have created a masterpiece in this dark futuristic tale of twin sisters who must share one identity in a society where control is the order of the day. Intense and descriptive, the twists and turns this story takes, as well as the obvious love the sisters share for one another, make for an unforgettable journey.
Overall I enjoyed the story and was excited to see what was next. Like The Hunger Games, you are dealing in a world in the future and things can be made up and fanciful.
If you enjoy these types of stories you’ll enjoy this book.
While there are some plot holes and some discrepancies that are almost unforgivable if you read this knowing it is just for entertainment and not fore being realistic you can enjoy the story.
I’m anticipating The Rule of Many to come out this year.
I loved it all! From the plot to the characters, and everything else! This is definitely a great book! I recommend it a thousand times!! I feel like I can relate in some way to both Mira and Ava. Mira and Ava also inspired me. Resist much, obey little.
I loved that it is about twins and written by twins.
