The wall between mages and the magicless is about to be broken…Growing up in Manhattan’s secret community of mages, 17-year-old Jonathan Lockwood has always seen his family as one of the enlightened ones, regularly campaigning to integrate with the so-called “Dulls” and offer their talents to the wider world. But when a looming disaster threatens hundreds of lives, he watches his parents bow to … his parents bow to the pressure to stay silent. Horrified, he resolves to intervene himself.
Jonathan’s mission leads him to a chance encounter with Amy, a girl who should be Dull but has a clear affinity for magic. As they struggle to tackle the impending threat, he introduces her to the world he knows is rightfully hers. The closer Jonathan and Amy become, the more he finds himself losing his heart—and his certainty about the rules he’s broken. The greater good may come at a price more painful than he ever expected to pay.
Set four decades before the Conspiracy of Magic trilogy, Magic Unmasked offers a glimpse into a critical turning point in magical history—events that set the stage for Rocío and Finn’s ordeals.

Fun read and relatable characters. I wanted to be there with them experiencing what they were experiencing. It ends far to soon.
It gets easier to understand as you read on…
A very interesting story prequel for Megan Crewe’s book Ruthless Magic. How it all began with Jonathan’s relationship with Amy during a time before the Mages were known to the Dulls or magic-less. Jonathan discovered by accident that Amy had magic so he encouraged her to learn how to use it. During the course of their relationship they discovered that those leaders in the Circle of Mages knew that something of significance was about to happen to Mount St Helens. Their determination to try to help those who lived in the path of the devastation found them traveling there unbeknownst to their parents. They were able to conjure a small bubble of protection around some of the people near one of the blockades which later got a lot of press from those who witnessed and were protected by what happened. This set the stage for some of the prominent members of the Circle of Mages to be more open to making magic more publicly known. For those readers who have read Ruthless Magic you may want to read this prequel to see how it all began. Although this is a prequel, it can be read as a stand-alone without the intense nail biting and gruesomeness as Ruthless.
This was quite a prequel. The attraction between Jonathan and Amy, was quite instantaneous. Even though she didn’t know, there was something quite different about her and Jonathan felt it. He took it upon himself, to see how she was different. They saw each other often, even though they’re from different communities, both trying too keep the other a secret from their families. They fall for each other and are more like a couple, after all the time together and kissing going on.
They live in a world with two different types of people. One type knows nothing of the others they’re called dulls, the others are mages. Not ready to reveal themselves. Jonathan is a young mage in favour of revealing themselves, he’s young and passionate about his beliefs. However, magic must stay secret.
Excellent book these characters are extremely likable, all have their opinions on things, are very different from each other, with distinct personalities. I enjoyed getting to know them and look forward too reading more about them. The book is also excellent, I loved the innocence in Amy and Jonathan also how passionate they are about helping people, saving lives, consequences be dammed.
Then the unthinkable happens to Jonathan, he’s angry and hurt over it. Amy doesn’t remember him. Yup, nothing. You’ll have to read to find out why.
Excellent book beginning to end, it caught and kept my attention. Definitely a book I recommend.
I received this ARC from the Author, the review is my honest opinion of what I read.
It started off interesting but the storyline kind of lost its way a bit. Plus I couldn’t get over the condescending tone of the book towards people who didn’t have magic.
