My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes is the definition of a page turner. I loved the storyline, it was interesting and unpredictable. The characters were fantastic! There were so many characters and they were all intriguing. I only wish it didn’t have to end! I want to read more!! Absolutely loved this story.
Love, love Grace Burrows!!
“My One and Only Duke” by Grace Burrowes
What a fun adventure… So very glad I found this audio book in my state library.. I will admit to quite a long wait for my turn to enjoy this story… and it was worth the wait, too !! Now I will be awaiting hearing that the next story in this series has arrived in my state library … and I will be getting in line that is for sure. Oh, and the name of the series is ‘Rogues to Riches’ this was book 1 and ‘When a Duchess Says I Do’ (Book 2 of this series) is due for our enjoyment in the spring of 2019.
Grace Burrowes is my favorite author. She is really great with character development, dialog and plot. You can never go wrong with one of her books. There is a short story that includes the Quinn – see if you can read it first. Tis the Season Regency with Christi Caldwell as the first author.
I love this writer, have read all of her books and always wonder if her next book will be somewhat similar to others.. it never is, she always surprises me with every new book she writes, her writing is original and the dialogue between the characters is always so smart, find myself many times going back and re-reading what I just read because is that good! can;t wait for the next book in this series, I hope she writes stories of every character on this book including NED! would love to see a Ned story… love that kid
3 1/2 stars. My One and Only Duke was a likable story with an good plot. My issue was that it tried a bit to hard on the mystery thread. I loved how Quinn and Jane found each other and how they came to be married. When Quinn gets released he is determined to find out who framed him. Unfortunately, I felt like almost every character was written for the reader to suspect them. I also had to use the dictionary on my Kindle for some of the dialogue. I think easier, more common words could have been used to get the same idea across.
I’d just read about Quinn Wentworth in a Christmas short story collection and was eager to read his book, and it is so worth it. Quinn is a self-made wealthy man and banker, but suddenly he’s facing hanging in Newgate over a supposed murder charge. Vicar’s daughter Jane Winston is widowed, pregnant, and desperate so when Quinn offers a hasty marriage to provide for her and her child, Jane agrees rapidly. When Quinn is not only saved at the last moment but inherits a dukedom, Jane’s life is turned upside down. Quinn’s siblings need handling, his household is a mess, and her new husband is out for revenge.
Every character in this book deserves their own story (and hopefully Ms. Burrowes will provide them soon). All are memorable and fun to read about. Jane and Quinn make a nice couple, and their fumbling to adjust to their new marriage is fun, especially with the nuances needed for a pregnant bride. One scene where Jane is throwing up into a china bowl in the nearest linen closet is very funny.
This is the start to a new series, Rogues to Riches, that will feature the eccentric Wentworth family. Based on this book, I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series.
Once again Grace Burrowes has written a charming new romantic duo. These two are the most honorable rags to riches hero and heroine I’ve enjoyed in ages. Lots of turns, lots of dasturdly doings (though at times more sedate than one might expect,) and her customary larger than life cast of supporting family members guarantees a satisfactory HEA.
I look forward to many more stories featuring these characters. Keep writing, Grace.
My One and Only Duke, the first title in Grace Burrowes’ new Rogues to Riches series, will draw you in to the lives of Quinn Wentworth, Jane Winston, and the Wentworth family.
Quinn Wentworth is a wealthy banker who has been framed and sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. His money has eased his stay in Newgate while awaiting his day with the hangman.
Jane Winston has come to Newgate with her father, a vicar who ministers to the prison population. She has been left widowed and pregnant after her husband dies in a duel. Quinn meets her during her visits and, upon learning her precarious situation, offers a marriage of convenience and a settlement that will provide independence for her and her child after Quinn’s death.
“Money changes everything. It changes how you’re perceived and treated, how you approach others. The changes aren’t always for the better but not having money can be fatal.”
Having money proves providential for Quinn, as he is granted a last-minute reprieve and pardon when he is found to be the heir to a bankrupt dukedom. Society had tolerated him because most either owed him money or were beholden to him. Now, he has become a duke and has a duchess. Quinn and Jane learn to deal with their new station in life and each other, but Quinn won’t rest easy until he finds out who framed him.
Grace Burrowes is an author whose books I’ve read and enjoyed, and this book is no exception. Her writing and character development is top-notch. While the book can be read as a stand alone, Burrowes does leave enough unanswered to tempt us. I’m definitely looking forward to the other books in the series, as I want to learn what else is in store for the Wentworths!

Once upon a time there was a banker waiting to be hanged and a young pregnant widow who accompanies her crazy Vicar Papa when he comes to the prison to perform his mission. The banker and the young woman talk and come to like each other. They marry so that the young woman can take care of herself and the baby, his final act of kindness. Wait… Quinn doesn’t die (it could not have been any closer); he is apparently heir to a duchy and is now the Duke of Walden. Jane is not a twice-widowed mother; she is now a duchess.
This is a very entertaining and busy story. Quinn and Jane must learn to handle the responsibilities of their new station while coming to know each other. Jane must also learn to cope with Quinn’s unusual family, which now includes also, not just Jane, but the “staff” Quinn brought out of prison with him. There’s lots to do, so much to learn, including who was behind Quinn’s murder charge and near fatal prison stay.
As I said, this is a busy story written in Grace Burrowes typical engaging and witty style. The characters, from the hero and heroine to loveable Ned, exhibit strength, intelligence, caring and confidence (although a little uncertainty appears at times). Well-written descriptions of the characters, the settings, and the circumstances draw the reader into the story. The story is well paced and has some drama, danger, and mystery mixed with the fun and romance. My One and Only Duke is a great beginning for what promises to be another wonderful series by Grace Burrowes. You don’t want to miss it!
The bonus novella was a treat!

My One and Only Duke is a sweet story full of wonderful characters that manage to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Quin Wentworth has a date with the hangman when a preacher’s pregnant widowed daughter is doing charitable visits at the local prison. Trying to give a good turn, Quin offers to marry Jane to give her freedom from her scoundrel of a father. Sometimes things do not go as planned, Quin has escaped the noose, to have a leg shackle to an unplanned wife and an indebted lofty title. Jane and Quin’s love story is sweet as they both become better people for their marriage as Jane convinces Quinn he is worthy of her, his family, and his title. Under Quinn’s accepting love, Jane grows a backbone and stands up for herself. Danger comes calling when Quinn cannot give up his quest to find the fiend who framed him for murder and planned to see him hang. I enjoyed the full cast of characters and look forward to visiting each of their stories. I only give five stars to books worthy to be reread and I cannot image that I would not revisit Quinn and Jane. I do not believe you can read this book and not come away a little bit in love with Quinn.. I thoroughly enjoyed the rags to riches feel to the story as everyday people were lifted to nobility.
I enjoyed this rags to riches story about Jane and Quinn. The author goes quite in depth with the characters, which I love. I was surprised, though not disappointed, when the scene where the villain was exposed went very quickly. I can’t wait to see how the rest of this unusual Wentworth family fares in the next book in this new series!
Quinn Wentworth was to be hanged that Monday for manslaughter, but due to circumstances he got a short reprieve. He had accepted his fate, but was feeling melancholy, when Jane Winston appeared in his cell. Jane is accompanying her father, the visiting preacher. Jane is doing her duty, then she and Quinn start talking. When he learns of Jane’s dire situation – a widow with a babe on the way and no money to speak of – Quinn knows he can pose one last gesture for a person in need: he will provide for her and her unborn child by marrying her. Then Quinn’s destiny is shockingly altered: the boy who grew up in York’s slums is now the Duke of Walden! He is a free man, now a married one as well, but the most important thing has not been taken care of: finding who wanted Quinn permanently out of the way.
MY ONE AND ONLY DUKE is the spectacular start of Grace Burrowes new Rogues to Riches series, and it promises to be epic. From the first pages, I was mesmerised by Ms. Burrowes dazzling and exquisite prose, and it felt like I had been transported through time than reading an oeuvre written by a contemporary author. The narrative is highlighted by the delicious humour and wit, and the brilliant and witty dialogues. The plot is riveting and flawlessly structured, and lovely period details, meticulous research, and historical accuracy add additional layers to this fabulous story. Quinn and Jane are marvellous, so vibrant and alive, and exceedingly complex characters. Their strength and loyalty know no bound, and they never ceased to surprise and delight me, especially Jane. Both are reasonable, engaging, and very determined people, and one of my favourite couples ever. The romance progressed organically, and quite different than the usual marriage of convenience; it was utterly delicious and absolutely convincing.
MY ONE AND ONLY DUKE also features several marvellous secondary characters, amongst them other Wentworth siblings and relatives; Quinn’s banker partner Joshua Penrose and newly acquired staff – and that was one brilliant and inspired touch! Let’s not forget the mystery part of this superb book, which had me guessing all the way to the end: it was far from obvious who the villain was. We always expect excellence from Grace Burrowes, and she never lets us down: MY ONE AND ONLY DUKE is Regency romance at its finest. And the icing on this scrumptious cake is the gift of a novella by Elizabeth Hoyt: Once upon a Christmas Eve!
London banker Quinn Wentworth is facing execution for manslaughter. The next, he’s declared the long-lost heir to a dukedom. Quinn has fought his way up from the vilest slums, and now he’s ready to use every dirty trick he knows to find the enemy who schemed against him.
Jane Winston, the widowed, pregnant daughter of a meddlesome prison preacher, crosses paths with Quinn in jail. Believing his days are numbered, Quinn offers Jane marriage as a way to guarantee her independence and provide for her child.
This was quite a long book however it kept my interest all the way through. A well written book with well fleshed & interesting characters. Quinn came across as a calculating character to begin with but he was soon shown as a truthful, honourable man who keeps his word even insisting five other inmates are released with him. Jane first came across as the wishy washy daughter of a preacher but how wrong was this impression! She’s strong & very determined in a quiet way & soon has the whole of the Wentworth household running on well oiled wheels. The beauty of this book was the relationship between Quinn & Jane how the dynamics changed & how they interacted. I hope the other Wentworths have their stories as the three siblings, Duncan & Joshua all deserve their stories
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This was a very enjoyable, well-written Regency romance. Jane, a widowed, pregnant daughter of a prison preacher, meets Quinn, a London baker who is in Newgate Prison, convicted of manslaughter and about to be executed. He offers to marry her to guarantee her independence and safeguard her child. After their marriage he is saved from execution and declared the long-lost heir to a dukedom. Now they have to find a way to move forward. Quinn has a number of eccentric family members and it was so entertaining to read the events of this story. I loved this book. It is the first in a new series and I can’t wait to read the next one.
While banker Quinn Wentworth is in jail waiting for his execution he meets Jane Winston, the disgraced daughter of a prison preacher. Ever the gentleman and in the presence of a damsel in distress, Quinn will offer marriage to pregnant Jane to help her gain some much needed independence as a somewhat respectable widow once his sentence is carried. But when he’s declared the heir of a dukedom and a pardon is granted, Quinn and Jane will be thrown together as a newly married couple who barely know each other and is then that life will get a tad complicated.
This was my first read by the author and, though I was quite taken by the plot and enjoyed the characters at play, I can’t say the same for the writing. I couldn’t find a flow and was distracted by the flourish language and writing style. That said, it was still a rather original and fun story to read.

Grace Burrows is hands down one of the best historical romance writers out there. To date I’ve read over 20 of her books and tthe latest My One and Only Duke is another sure fire winner. Her latest book follows Quinn Wentworth who some of you may remember from My Own True Duchess.
While held at Newgate prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Quinn marries pregnant preachers daughter Jane Winston. Miraculously pardoned at the last minute Quinn and Jane suddenly fined themselves negotiating married life while complete strangers. As with all Burrows books, My One and Only Duke has a unique story line, interesting and likable characters and of course a HEA. My only complaint (and its not really a complaint) is that I would have liked an epilogue say 5 or 10 years down the road. I’d give this one a definite 4.7 stars.
