WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

Love this author. Enjoyed this book but did find the ending a disappointment.
Provoked more discussion than any other book our book club has ever read. Pretty much across the board, we all had the same favorite character and he wasn’t the main character.
Am I the only “serious” reader in America who didn’t like this arch, pretentious book? It never reached out and touched or spoke to me — I felt as if I were reading the work of a brilliant fish. But I seem to be the only one …
The Goldfinch is an extraordinary book which I will continue to love, since I know it will stay with me. I don’t know what to add to its many reviews other than after reading 774 pages, I wish there were 500 more to savor.
The Goldfinch didn’t live up to The Secret History or The Little Friend. For me, anyway. Everybody else I know loved it.
This book got a bit long but was a good story.
I love a book with beautiful prose and clear, original descriptive language. The Goldfinch is just that – it’s lovely to read and clear why it’s a Pulitzer Prize winner. Following Theo and an ill-gotten painting that mesmerizes him, the story propels one through the upended life of a thirteen-year-old boy to the sordid underworld of art and …
Did not like the premise
This is a world-class novel.
I loved this book, although I know many people who did not. It was long, but the descriptions of characters and locations was so well done, and the story line so taut – I really enjoyed it.
can you say the big Prize
An excellent read.
I just wanted it to go on forever, I was a tiny bit disappointed in the ending but it really was the only ending that made sense. Loved the book totally.
Too long – you’ll need patience to get thru this one.
Enthralling!!
This book was a slow starter but once I got past the first 60 pages I was hooked. The characters were interesting and full of surprises. A good summer read as it is a long book and might just take most of the summer to read it.
Great characters, pretty good story, but long.
Interesting story but really would have benefited from editing.
Liked character development. Thought too many subplots that were not essential to the story.
extraordinary writing. compelling descriptions and story arc. Highly recommend.
