“Spencer is my new auto-buy!” —New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt He could be her ruin Hugh Redvers is supposed to be dead. So the appearance of the sun-bronzed giant with the piratical black eye patch is deeply disturbing to Lady Daphne Davenport. And her instant attraction to the notorious privateer is not only wildly inappropriate for a proper widow but potentially … wildly inappropriate for a proper widow but potentially disastrous.Because he is also the man Daphne has secretly cheated of title, lands, and fortune.
She could be his salvation
Daphne Redvers’ distant, untouchable beauty and eminently touchable body are hard enough to resist. But the prim, almost severe, way she looks at him suggests this might be the one woman who can make him forget all the others. His only challenge? Unearthing the enemy who threatens her life . . . and uncovering the secrets in her cool blue eyes.
Praise for the first book in The Outcasts series
“Minerva Spencer’s writing is sophisticated and wickedly witty. Dangerous is a delight from start to finish with swashbuckling action, scorching love scenes, and a coolly arrogant hero to die for.”
—New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt
“Readers will love this lusty and unusual marriage of convenience story.”

If you haven’t read this book yet, why not?? Hurry, go and buy it NOW! I have just finished reading it and my head is still spinning at how absolutely fantastic Hugh and Daphne’s story was!! Everything you’d ever want in a historical romance is included in this book and it held my interest from the first page to the last one…and even then, I wanted it to continue! lol Hugh is the kind of hero you will adore and your heart will break for what he has gone through. Daphne is the kind of heroine you will love and what she went through will also tug at your heartstrings. Minerva Spencer really did an outstanding job writing this 2nd book in the Outcasts series and I now look forward to reading the next one! Wish I could give this more than 5 stars….
I have found a new Author I will be following. This book I could Not put down. I read it all through the night. Excellent Hero and Heroin. Loved the build up of the characters to the end. All I can say is you will love this book and be glad you bought it.
Once again, Minerva Spencer has turned out a terrific romance with characters introduced in her first book, DANGEROUS. I enjoyed #1, but #2 held me spellbound. There is less backstory here, and Spencer seems to have come into her own as an author. BARBAROUS has a plot that sucked me in, and her characters (Hugh a pirate who’s returned home, and Daphne, his “aunt” by marriage), are a bit older than normal and actually act their age. The romance is steam and enjoyable.
This is a great read. Couldn’t put it down. Fresh new author who writing will hold your attention till the end of book. Just can’t wait for the next book!
Barbarous by Minerva Spencer is book Two in The Outcasts series. This is the story of Daphne Redvers, Lady Davenport and Hugh Redvers. I haven’t yet read the previous book, so for me this was a standalone book.
Daphne was raped when she was around 17 years old by Sir Malcolm, which made her pregnant. Hugh’s Uncle stepped up to marry her. Now a few years later the Earl is dead, Sir Malcolm is threatening Daphne. Then Hugh, her husbands nephew turns up…everyone had thought him dead. Now Daphne knows she must confess that her children are not the Earl’s to allow Hugh the chance to take the title. Hugh who was contacted by his friend Will who knew his status of being alive to report that Daphne and her boys were in trouble, so he came out of hiding to help them. Hugh has his own enemy who he is trying to locate too while protecting Daphne. Sparks are flying between the two but as his ‘Aunt’ it would be turned upon for a relationship between the two, also Hugh doesn’t plan on staying around long.
Good read…enjoyed it.
Barbarous is the second book in the Outcast series by Minerva Spencer. I liked the first book, Dangerous, and was looking forward to reading the second book. I am happy to say that Barbarous did not disappoint. I am enjoying this darker Regency historical romance series very much. All the heroes are outcasts, even if they are a part of the ton and all the heroines so far are mature women who experienced some trauma in the past.
Barbarous is the love story between a notorious King’s Privateer, Hugh Redvers, and Lady Daphne Davenport, who secretly cheated Hugh out of his title and fortune. Their love story is fraught with angst, danger, and uncertainty, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about them. I must say I loved Barbarous just a little less than Dangerous but this book is still an excellent addition to the series. And I am looking forward to the next book in the series, which will be Martin’s, Hugh’s second in command, story.
“Life is fleeting and precious…seize every opportunity to enjoy it. Never take even one day for granted.”
Lady Daphne Davenport finds herself in quite a predicament. While picnicking with her twin 10 year old sons, she’s once again attacked by Sir Malcolm Hastings. Daphne is determined to no longer cringe at the face of danger, and takes matters into her own hands…literally, by bashing Sir Malcolm in the nose. In rides our mysterious hero, Hugh Redvers, the long lost heir to the Davenport name. So many secrets and twists revolve around Daphne and Hugh, and with each passing day, they grow closer to discovering a truth about one another…and realizing that perhaps love can overcome their dark past and bring with it a brighter future.
Barbarous has everything a pirate loving romance reader enjoys—A lady in distress, a hero riding in to save the day, a devilish villain, and of course, a happily ever after. This is the first story I have read from Minerva Spencer, and I look forward to reading more. Highly recommend to fans of historical romance.
*Received an ARC via NetGalley for honest review*
When I started this book, I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t set on the pirate ship but after getting into the book, I enjoyed the characters including the secondary ones. I like the humor, adventure, action, suspense and romance although for this reviewer there was a little too much sex in it but as usual I skipped it and it did not affect my enjoyment of the book. It still had me turning the page to see what was going to happen next and how it would work out. For me this is the sign of a good read. This is the first book of Ms Spencers that I have read and am looking forward to reading more. I received this book as an ARC.
An adventurous story of lies, blackmail, pirates and love, when a peer of the realm returns from the dead to protect his aunt and her twin sons.
A wonderful read on a rainy day.
The first book in this series was great but this book, wow! I loved it. Hugh is a guy who can make you laugh, cry, or shrink in fear. Daphne is a survivor and I admired her for that reason. Get these two together and sparks are flying all over the place. That was a whirlwind ride from sketchy cousins, to pirates, to slavers, to love. It reminds me a lot of old school books but updated and refreshing and “I can’t put it down”. Amazing!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
This is one of the most well-written books I’ve read in quite some time and I loved the unique analogies I found in it. When you read as much as I do, it can sometimes get a bit repetitive, but this one was very original. The hero of this story is Hugh, a baron-turned-pirate who has returned from the dead, complete with a mysterious past and a determination to get to know our heroine more intimately. Daphne has quite a few secrets of her own and tries to do what she sees as the right thing by staying away from Hugh, who has quite a colorful history with women, and she refuses to be another conquest for him. Hugh turned out to be one of the sweetest, most sincere heroes I’ve read, and was actually very likable. There was also some plotting and intrigue going on here in addition to the romance and sexual tension that made the book un-put-down-able. Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author/publisher for the ARC!
