Avalanche of Trouble by Cindi Myers is book two in a four book series. I’m not always big on stories with missing children, but this one had a twist and was well done. The parent’s of the missing girl are murdered, and the girl is deaf. The little girl’s aunt comes to help look for her niece and to find out what happened to her sister and brother-in-law and meets Deputy Gage Walker. This story ties into the first one, so I do recommend reading the first one, Saved By The Sheriff. It, too, was a good read. Looking forward to reading the next one, Deputy Defender.
“Avalanche of Trouble” by Cindi Myers is book 2 of the Eagle Mountain Murder Mystery miniseries.
Deputy Gage Walker meets teacher Maya Renfro when her sister and brother-in-law are murdered and her niece goes missing.
Gage, a commitment-phobe, is immediately drawn to Maya. He wants to keep her by his side to keep her safe while they search for her niece, Casey.
Maya is attracted to Gage, but she needs to find Casey before she can even begin to think about her own happiness.
Attraction, though, can’t be denied, and Maya does give in to her instincts to allow herself to get what she wants, even if she believes it’s a one-time deal.
There are a couple scenes in Casey’s point of view, and she is close to being a scene-stealer when she is with Gage and Maya. She is very smart and brave while she tries to survive after witnessing her parents’ murder.
On more than one occasion, “Avalanche of Trouble” will steal your breath and make you speed-read to find out what happens next.
Ms. Myers does an outstanding job continuing the mystery from book 1 (“Saved by the Sheriff”) while giving us a very satisfying read and resolution to who murdered Casey’s parents.
This is the 2nd book in the Eagle Mountain Murder Mystery series and each is a stand alone issue that does not have to be read in any particular order.
Gage Walker is a Deputy in the small, rural, town of Eagle Mountain, Colorado and is known as a ladies’ man. He’s been with the Rayford County Sheriff’s Department for 4 years and knows the town is pretty much peaceful but he’s been called to a campsite near Dakota Ridge where he finds a man and woman murdered. Each shot in the back of the head. Gage calls the sister of the deceased woman, Maya Renfro, and finds out that a 5 year old deaf girl is missing.
Maya Renfro, a high school teacher, can’t believe that her sister is dead but knows she must keep it together to find her niece, Casey. She doesn’t think highly of small towns but is thrown off balance with the chemistry that is floating between her and Gage. The danger doesn’t end with finding Casey, it just keeps getting worse, throw love into this dangerous mix and see what happens…
I am loving this series, absolutely everything about it! From the atmosphere in the small town, the people who live in it, the law enforcement who protect and serve it, to the swoon-worthy, ah so deliciously luscious love stories, and the intense, up-close-and dangerous suspense that puts the main characters into the dire straits, I enjoyed every single moment of it.
Deputy Gage Walker is not only charming and handsome, he is a man of dignity, honor, and loyalty. He takes his job seriously, he sincerely cares about the people in his town, he has a big heart, he shows kindness and gentleness when needed, yet he takes a charge, he determined, giving up is not a concept to him.
Maya Renfro, the poetry slamming high school teacher who never thought she would have to claim the promise to be a guardian to her niece if something were to happen to Casey’s parents. Maya is quirky, she loves her family, she heartbroken from the loss of her sister, but her resilient mind and heart are determined not to let little Casey down.
Casey was an amazing, sweet, smart, capable five-year-old survivor. I love how she connected with Gage, the immediate bond between was palpable, and the fragile trust Casey gave to Gage, she knew it would be treasured and never broken. And the connection goes double fold between Maya and Gage, it is sizzling hot, the attraction is tangible in the air, yet it is the tender adoration and the sweet need to protect and take care of the other that shines through in their insta-love story. I loved how equal they were with each other in any and every situation. Even when facing the horrifying danger, they were able to work as one unit, as partners, and as a team with Casey when the need arises.
The tension and uncertainty in the town caused by the recent murders and the continues threat they bring to the protagonists are chilling and terrifying. There is no place that is safe, there is no moment they can ease their vigilance, the danger is close, and the culprits seem to know all the routines of the town and the sheriff’s office.
The story held me enamored with the precious connection to Casey who has to endure so much at the tender age, with the delectable romance building up between Maya and Gage, and with the critical, nail-biting, keyed up, fatal suspense and action.
