The last thing he expected to find was love.Having spent two years abroad to avoid his father’s schemes to see him wed, Oliver Darby returns to England to claim his inheritance. When Nicole Flint accepted the role of paid companion to Lady Rose Darby, nothing was as it seemed. Whisked away from London to a haunted manor that once housed the insane, the two ladies are kept prisoner with no hope of reprieve. But when an opportunity arises for one of them to escape, Nicole knows she must be the one to stay. After all, her purpose for working has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with the need to hide from her controlling brother.
Thrown together in a wild adventure full of lies and deceit, guilt forces Oliver and Nicole to search for the lost Lady Rose. The overwhelming attraction that exists between them only complicates matters. He’s a man driven by passion and lust. She’s a lady looking for true love. A Regency historical romance with an emphasis on mystery.
This novel contains some descriptive sex scenes.

Ms. Clee has seamlessly woven historical romance and mystery into one beautifully written novel. The protagonist of the story, Miss Flint, is a strong woman who stands her ground, yet has a softness that lends herself to romance. Lord Stanton is every woman’s dream; rich, intelligent, brave, and honorable. Together, they sizzle. This book ends in a cliffhanger, but it is well worth the time to read. I intend to purchase the entire series, based on the quality of this book.
Adele Clee pens another winner with The Mysterious Miss Flint!
This story was packed with everything that makes a suspenseful historical romance novel a MUST read for me. It had an intriguing plot line that had some twists and surprises that kept me engaged from beginning to end. The characters are so vivid and full of life that they seem to step right off of the pages. The banter between Nicole and Oliver is smart, amusing and witty. The chemistry between the two of them nearly crackles off the pages. And, the descriptive imagery pulls you in and makes you feel a part of each scene. Throw in a well-thought-out mystery that needs solving, and you have all the ingredients necessary for a slightly dark and thoroughly delicious read!
I was left wanting to read more from the author, and that’s how you start a series off right!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Today the Darby family would be described as dysfunctional. Before his death, the late Earl of Stanton arranged matters to torment and haunt his only son and heir from the grave and put him on a guilt trip. Oliver is determined to heal the family, but first he has to locate his younger sister, Rose. Arriving just a day late to free Rose, Oliver finds Miss Flint still at the manor. Together they start their search for Rose, the time spent together bringing them closer. Along the way there are several surprises and twists for the characters and the reader, but all masterfully arranged by Adele Clee. I’m already looking forward to book 2!
Ms. Clee has combined two of my favorite things – mystery and romance – in an easily-read book. The characters are well-rounded, likeable, and interesting (another of my favorite things). The main story moves along at a good pace; the minor events contribute body and intrigue to the plot. Well done!
I can’t wait to see where Miss Rose has been.
I received this novel as an ARC with the understanding I would provide an unbiased review. I did.
Oliver Darby has spent the last two years in Italy in an effort to avoid his father’s machinations. With his father now dead Oliver has returned to England as the new Earl of Stanton to claim his inheritance and settle into comfortable bachelorhood. When he arrives to find his sister, Rose, has been missing for six months, he realizes his father’s duplicity went even deeper than he’d realized.
Desperate to escape her greedy, abusive brother and sister-in-law, Nicole Flint took on the role of paid companion to Lady Rose Darby. The position turned out to be nothing she expected, with both she and Rose held prisoner in a former asylum. When a chance arises for one of them to escape, Nicole knows it must be Rose who leaves. After all, Nicole merely needs to stay hidden from her brother, so it makes more sense for her to stay behind.
When Oliver arrives to save his sister only to find her gone, he and Nicole find themselves unraveling an elaborate web of lies. The attraction between them causes further complication and distraction they can’t afford, especially when Oliver believes in passion but not love and Nicole is a romantic looking for her one true love. To find Rose, and themselves, they must both reevaluate everything they thought they knew about life and love.
I really enjoyed the gothic feel and mystery of this one. It was rather different and refreshing compared to what I’ve been reading as of late. I listened to the audiobook version and the narration was lovely and enhanced the book. This was a new to me narrator but I’ll look for more of her work and continue this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Nice plot twists and likable characters.
Who is Miss Flint? And where is Rose? So begins this intriguing Regency mystery.
How long will it take Oliver to figure out the twists and turns of this lively and fast-moving story? And where is Rose?
I Highly Recommend all Adele’s excellent stand-alone books; and these Fabulous Series: ‘The Brotherhood’; ‘Anything for Love’; ‘Lost Ladies of London’ and ‘Avenging Lords’
This was a fun listen, and Liisa Ivary did a wonderful job of keeping me interested with her emotions as she narrated. Nicole has been through a lot but still has the ability to trust the right person. Oliver is full of guilt and does not want closeness with anyone. I enjoyed both characters and their journeys to finding themselves and true love. I recommend this story (book or audio) and look forward to the next in the series.
I received a copy of this audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
This is a romantic mystery historical novel that rolls off the pages and off the tongue of the narrator beautifully.
Oliver has very set ideas on love and lust and believes only in lust. Nicole on the other hand truly believes that love (and trust) is an essential part of any good relationship between a man and a woman. She also is very honest and isn’t shy to voice her beliefs. So whose ideals will win out? Guess you will have to read/listen to this story to find out.
Be prepared for many twists and turns that will will keep you guessing about what is to happen next. You might also find yourself first routing for one of the characters and later for the other.
I loved everything about this story and hope you do too.
Note: Although this is a complete story, it continues with another adventure in book 2.
I requested and received a free copy of the audiobook and this is my voluntary and unbiased review.
