A historical romance novel in the pick-a-path style of the Choose Your Own Adventure novels we all read as kids. This is a decidedly adult version, with lots of loving tongue-in-cheek references to historical romance stereotypes and conventions. To be read and laughed at/with while drinking a big cup of tea.
This “choose your own adventure”-style romance novel is the perfect beach read, because it’s not just one book–it’s several, all under a single cover. Depending on what path you take, you (the plucky heroine) could end up with the fetching bachelor Sir Benedict Granville…the hardworking Irishman Captain Angus McTaggart…or, in my case, Ollie, a somewhat-dull ex-flame. Now I have to re-read My Lady’s Choosing to see if I can hook up with a REAL romance hero.
Checked this out on a whim from the library (on Overdrive) and it was a hoot! Have you ever read a romance and thought, No, that character definitely shouldn’t make that choice! In this one the choices are up to you. Unfolding with traditional romance options like “take a position as a governess on a remote estate” and “help a brusque Scot care for orphans” plus more unusual ones like “follow a new friend to Egypt,” it was a fun change of pace, and if you don’t like where you end up, you can always back up and choose differently until you’ve seen all the options.
What an absolutely adorable story…or stories depending on what you choose. I was so impressed with the writing and the voice. Completely fun.
Reading this book was like being plopped down right into a Jane Austen novel, except I got to determine how the story would play out. Sometimes there was no choice, like in the beginning of the book when the main character (me!) really had few options due to her position in life. I liked that because I found it true to the time period and the character’s situation.
I suggest reading this book in one sitting if possible like on a long plane ride or a day by the pool. I also don’t recommend reading this book as an e-book. With all the flipping back and forth, it was kind of a pain. I’d much rather hold the physical book and bookmark the pages/ path that I took. That way, when I want to re-read it and get a different story and a different outcome, I’d be able to re-trace my previous steps and take a different path.
As far as the story goes, I found it quite entertaining. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say there were some surprising twists in the story (at least on the path I chose!) I loved that! I love a book that can surprise me. I will say that this is a book for adults. It’s not young adult and definitely not teen or middle grade. Don’t be fooled by the “Choose Your Own Adventure” format. There is some very grown up content in these pages. Think Jane Austen meets Danielle Steel!
I received an early copy of this book from Quirk Books through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
