How to Steal a Million
The nice thing about writing a book is that you can create and control your own universe, describe the game rules, and set in motion the circumstances that will lead to the end result–although I’ve heard many an author say that having provided the background, their characters take off and do their own thing. Author D.N. Leo has created a multiverse running through a multitude of books in a number of series, I discovered as I read the end notes.
Reading and listening (I am rapidly becoming addicted to audiobooks) I was immersed only in THIS story which started out with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole (whoops–wrong media/wrong generation; if you’ve never seen the film “How to Steal a Million,” put it on your MUST DO list!) . . . a young woman and man trying to steal an object to order for an unknown recipient. Almost immediately elements of the supernatural are evident as a grinning skull, weeds and bony limbs attempt to entrap and drown our heroine (which would have made for an extremely short novel, had they succeeded).
Narrator Claire Lindsay has a crisp, clean voice and distinct character vocalizations and accents. If you are just reading you will have to supply your own inflections and accents. Suffice it to say this is a gripping tale which does NOT leave you hanging although there are plenty of open doors left to explore.
A one-day read for adults only with plenty of action. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Prepare to engage in a story of where there are curses manipulating characters’ lives, a dangerous job of where there is no backing out of, and more going on than meets the eye. Orla is a proficient thief, but she prefers to be called an “experienced high profile antique collector.” When she is hired to “steal” a young woman she finds herself in over her head. There is more going on than she knows, but as she has accepted the first part of the job, there is no backing out. Plus, she has two curses placed on her life. A dark curse and a light curse. The dark curse is at work because her boyfriend Lorcan loves her, and wants to take the next step. However, there is also a white curse at work that was placed on Orla by a family member who loved her and wished to save her life. The race is on to save not just herself (if she can) from the curse that binds her, but those around her who are also being targeted by beings both supernatural and mortal.
Spell Breaker is book one in D.N. Leo’s Spectrum of Magic series. In this book we are thrown into a world of magic, curses and full of danger. The story is fast paced and kept me engaged from the beginning all the way to the end. Orla is an interesting character. We get some background on her here and there in the story but not really a lot. The author gives us bits and pieces as to whom and what Orla is. I love the supernatural element of the dark curse that the author gives the reader from the very beginning. This is what immediately hooked me into the story. I immediately wanted to know more. Then when she rescues the kitten, I’m sold. I’m an avid animal lover, but as the story moves forward you get the distinct feeling that there is more than meets the eye with the kitten. There are so many elements to this story. I like the air of mystery in the story. There is so much going on that you need to really stay focused or you might get lost.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. I will admit that there are some elements that the author does not touch on and completely resolve. I wanted to know more about what transpired at Fossey Way. There are a lot of strings left blowing in the wind, but I’m hoping that they are picked up in the next book in this series.
I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I found this story to be truly engaging. The characters are interesting. They aren’t perfect; they are very much flawed, because instead of letting go of Lorcan Orla clings to him tighter each time someone says let him go. The various plots and subplots keep the story moving forward, so you have to make sure you pay close attention to what is going on. I look forward to reading the next book and seeing what happens next.
